My first new car was a 2010 Tacoma TRD Off Road double cab 6 speed manual with manual cloth seats and a terrible JBL sound system. That was $35k, which is $47,560 in todays dollars. The closest gladiator to that is the Willys edition and that’s about $45k. I personally got my Rubicon for $48,400 and it is far beyond more equipped. . Now the Rubicon MSRP jumped around $5.5k, but the prices aren’t as bad as they seem.

If you could start charging $100,000 per unit and people actually paid it.. why go back to making less profit. You will never again see lots with the amount of vehicles we did pre covid, they will collude to limit supply to keep the prices at the maximum they figure the customer will pay. OPEC has been fixing oil prices this way for ages.

My main complaint of the midsized/smaller trucks (beside the general trend of all vehicles of having Uber prices) is that they aren’t too separate from full-sized. There just isn’t enough cost or gas savings from the full sized.

The mid-size truck market is were it’s at! The Tacoma looks the best but it’s slow af. The Frontier is my current favorite. The new Colorado & Caynon will be my new favorite next year. The Ridgeline is not a real truck & the Gladiator is an off-roading beast. The Ranger is like the 40 s&w cartridge, it’s not the best at anything but it’s very good at everything.

While the NEW trucks are great, I STILL HAVE A BIG BEEF with manufacturers regarding BOTH PRICE and the lack of an at-least SIX FOOT BED! Interestingly, ALL of these new mid-size trucks are LARGER than my Dad's 1980's/1990's-era F150 full-size truck due to cab length extensions! Price-wise, it is ASTOUNDING how much of a rise (BEYOND that of other consumer products!) such that what used to be a $35,000 decently equipped tradesperson vehicle is now running north of $50,000 and getting into $60,000 territory! That is just outrageous! How about making a decent subsurban/rural basic version with a basic easy-to-clean crew cab interior AND a 6 foot long bed for about $35,000? That is what fleet buyers and the working tradesperson/farmer needs! That's 250,000 worth of truck sales right there in terms of smaller non-full-size trucks within the USA and Canada alone! Don't leave that market hanging! YES! we KNOW the higher trim levels are used as Mall Queens and 4x4 Prestige trucks but having a BASIC $35,000 basic medium-size truck with a 6 foot bed and crew cab with not too much failure-prone tech that I can wash out the inside with a simple hose-down is just right for a good many people! ALSO !!!!! Please Ford, GMC, Chevy, RAM, etc. just give us a 6 foot bed EVEN WITH the crew cab models! We NEED at least a 6 foot bed! A 6.5 foot bed would be even better! You would be surprised how much an extra foot means in terms of work-capability and in-bed hauling that REQUIRES the longer bed length! If you have to increase prices to these astronomical levels, at the very least give us a full 6 foot or 6.5 foot long truck bed on ALL trim levels even the high-end Luxo-Barge and super-4x4 off-roader versions! V

Anyone remember when mid sized trucks weren't larger than full size trucks? The 2023 Tacoma is 3" longer, 3" taller, 1,000 pounds heavier, It has a 5" longer wheelbase than the original Tundra. I mean, I get it, safety and what-not, but they get almost the same fuel economy too. Silly.

S-10 & SONOMA , RANGER, ETC ALL USED TO BE BUDGET PICKUP TRUCKS THAT WERE PRETTY RELIABLE AND EASY TO WORK. GREAT LITTLE TRUCKS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE, STUDENTS AND THOSE WITHOUT THE NEED FOR HEAVY HAULING, WANT THE CARGO CAPABILITY AND ARE BUDGET MINDED.. YEAH THESE NEW VEHICLES ARE BADASS BUT WERE DOES THIS PRICING MADNESS STOP? HOW ARE YOUNG FAMILIES GOING TO PAY FOR THESE THINGS ? SEEMS LIKE THERE DELIBERATELY PRICING THE LARGER POPULAS OUT OF NEW CAR OWNERSHIP OR A LIFETIME OF BANK DEBT. CORRUPT SYSTEM ACROSS THE BOARD. HOPEFULLY ONCE THE BOTTOM IS REACHED ON THE CAR AND HOUSING MARKET OVER THE NEXT 2 YEARS , AUTOMAKERS WILL TAKE NOTE AND MAKE A BUDGET FRIENDLY TRUCK WHICH THEY WILL SELL THE SHYT OUT OF.

Great show but I have some questions. So many car makers are dropping diesels (and V8's) and going to turbo-chargers. Are they as reliable? In the long run, are they not more expensive for owners since they "require" premium fuel? If you are looking solely at cost of ownership, it seems like there are very few choices of trucks and SUV'S that use regular gas.. Have you all considered doing a show on the cost of ownership and the reliability of today's turbo-charged engines? What companies are producing these turbo-chargers and do they have "reputation reliability" like Toyota has? Great content for a show!!!!!!!!!!

Have you been living under a rock, or in an Amish country for the last 20 years…? ALL modern common rail diesels are turbocharged, some are twin/bi turbo. And the manufacturers of turbos are old, solid experts. Some single and twin turbos last 3-500.000 km EASILY!

Not all require premium gas (ranger, f150, etc) though you may get a little more power if you do. All the big rigs that go hundreds of thousands of miles use turbos without issues. I think that the more modern engines you need to keep up on maintenance better can't just add a little oil in it and call it good.

This is why I bought my truck when I did. The Ranger Lariat FX4 is already over $45k and a Tacoma TRD Off Road premium is near that as well. Got my Gladiator with leather, pained hard top and fenders, alpine sound, led package, safety package, towing etc for $48,400. . Yeah it’s more than I’d like to spend, but I got $9k off during the pandemic and knew prices weren’t coming back down. Now I’m seeing people spend $15k more than I did for virtually the same packages. . Ironically, I bought a 2010 Tacoma for $35k with nothing for amenities. Cloth, stick, double cab trd off road new in 2009. Had the jbl speakers though. That’s $47,560 in todays dollars, so I got a much much nicer truck for essentially the same money.

I doubt that you will see availability of the cheaper trims on those offroad models. Manufacturers have realized they can keep the price high by limiting availability (just like OPEC does). All sorts of shady tactics with these companies. IE. Why no 10 speed transmission on the Chev or GMC gassers? They are trying to upsell you on the Diesel for 10K more, because if they paired the 10 speed with the 6.6 gas the difference in MPG would make the expensive diesel even harder to sell.

@Darren Gross and the cabin space is less, especially back seat. Interior is outdated. As a daily driver. It's not comfortable. But they sell based on their name alone because people like Darren believe that, while inferior, they're still somehow better. It's rather interesting.

Sadly, what the automakers are doing is reminiscent of the Great Depression in the 1930's. The automakers manufactured some of the most innovative, capable, forward-looking, handsome vehicles ever produced up to that time, BUT ALMOST NO ONE COULD AFFORD THEM. By 1941, many of the high-end automakers were bankrupt and most of those that survived were gone by the end of the 1950's. Right now, much of the middle class in American can no longer afford any new car beyond the most basic transportation. And the REAL recession/depression is only just beginning. My prediction--by late 2023, high-end pickups like the GMC Canyon AT4X will be getting heavily discounted just to get them off of dealer lots. By 2024 or 2025, I predict at least one of the Big Three American auto companies will be in bankruptcy.

I think a large market exists, well still exist for “dumb” trucks, that are reliable and work, meaning payload, towing longevity no bells and whistles and don’t care about tech and screens that go bad and don’t want the gimmicks. With midsize trucks being formerly full-size truck sizes, the auto manufacturer who makes such a truck you can actually buy for under $29k will gain tremendous market share.

Was just on the Config site, and NO GMS Plan for current employee's and family for the new Colorado/GMC trucks. it doesn't apply to all, but hey that extra 2~4k adds up fast. Just FYI in case you are fortunate enough to get that. It has some things I just don't care about if you actually work in the trades as I do. 1. That stupid tailgate cargo box. Why? how long do you think those latches will last, once a large heavy item snaps em' clean off? 2. Light control in the Infotainment screen! That's just plain stupid! I can control my own lights, thank you! I like to drive with just my running lights on most of the time. 3. I can see many turbo's potential failing right after the warranty ends, (speculating ) but trust me after owning turbo's and rebuilding them by hand, last thing I want is a turbo that is integrated into the manifold. While the new block is beefier and uses new forged lower end parts from the now discontinued Duramax, I'm sure that is fine. But I have to again go back to the turbo's and there high propensity of failure. Those sealed journal bearings simply will not hold up to the intense heat over time and load. Even if they are water cooled. I hope I'm wrong. Time will tell. 4. As far as overall quality ( Sans turbo? ) GM has improved greatly! I own a 2020 ZR2 with about 55K and I've had not ONE single issue! Zero squeaks rattles or otherwise, and trust me I'm no angel when it comes to my right foot. So my concerns about the new 2023 are really non-existent. Break Em' in slowly people! I would never, ever buy a truck without a cold rolled, hydroformed frame, end of story. 5. Lastly I want the dropped forged cast iron front upper and lower control arms on the TrailBoss. Have not been able to see them in pics' or specs. Anyone Know?

P.S. Where is my inside and outside-of-truck accessible combo Fridge + Freezer that can hold 4 subway subs sandwiches, a six-pack of sprite AND keep a one gallon bucket of ice cream frozen solid for at least an entire 4-day holiday weekend? I want the combo fridge-freezer to be lockable and openable from the outside via ANY authorized end-user enabled smartphone connection AND/OR via the key fob AND/OR via the on-truck-body keypad combination code. Put it in the tailgate (i.e. make it thicker and STILL accessible if the tailgate is DOWN or UP or put the combo-fridge/freezer in the front of the truck easily accessible via a lockable door. ARE YOU LISTENING Ford, GMC, CHEVY, RAM ??? Put that feature on EVERY truck model and trim --- even the low-end trims such as XL/XLT as an extra option! Tradespeople and outdoors enthusiasts would LOOOOOOVE to have an exterior-accessible lockable combo fridge/freezer that doesn't need the rest of the truck to be opened! Just use your smartphone or key fob or keypad! Just remember we MUST be able to fit four foot-long sub sandwiches in the refrigerator compartment separated from the six-pack of whatever drinks via a removable divider AND we MUST be able to fit an entire one gallon bucket of frozen ice cream in the freezer portion! PLEASE PUT THIS OPTION into your new truck development timeline ASAP! V

Starting MSRP of the new Colorado Trail Boss is $38,990, but, that gives you a full framed lifted crew cab pickup with Hi/Low transfer case, Eaton locker rear axle (The G80 GM has used for decades is a locker made by Eaton) , tow hooks etc, that's actually not a bad deal considering the Raptor, ZR2, TRX full size that are approaching 80K, you could buy 2 of the Trail Boss's for that and accomplish most of the off-roading of it's big brothers.

Toyota Tacoma has ruled the mid-sized market. For some reason Honda has had terrible production problems, and that is probably why the Hybrid Ridgeline is delayed again. Very disappointing, because a hybrid entry would instantly become the most economical to operate model in this segment. Gas is very expensive here in California (over $5/gal). I keep hoping that Ford will add a hybrid option, but i don't expect that for two more years, as they are so far behind on Bronco production, they can't afford to change anything.

Over $50k for current top of the line midsized trucks is outrageous😡 Overall vehicle supply is going to be short for most of this decade, so prices will not go down anytime soon if ever. Every manufacturer is going to add unibody models to fill in where afforable midsized trucks left everyone. If the Ranger Raptor gets a V6, midsized prices will be off the charts!

My brother drove his cash for clunkers Colorado purchased new in 2008 for 500030 miles. Manual transmission on original clutch. We think the oil pump grenades and took out the engine. His mechanic was considering getting a crate engine ,but we found a Ford Ranger eighteen years old for about the same price the Colorado was new

My prediction is Toyota will reveal the 2024 Tacoma before Colorado/Canyon hit dealers. Ford will also reveal the US market Ranger and Raptor about the same time. Doing so will be just in time for people that are not brand loyalists to see other options before finalizing a purchase. Nissan needs to give the Frontier a boost unless they want to be the budget truck.
