What about the legendary "slant six"? I have heard those things are almost invincible. And it is like the perfect engine for turbocharging since it has exhaust and air intake on the same side of the head.

I would have put the slant six in this collection instead of the 2.2. If I recall correctly, it was designed as an industrial engine and adapted for automotive use, which is one of the reasons it was so reliable. Too tall to stand upright under a hood, it was slanted to allow clearance. You can get good power out of a 225 with proper tuning. Everyone that rode in mine swore up and down it had a V8.

I would've expected the 440 instead of the 413 too, and the 8.4L viper instead of the first gen viper. also, it should be noted to take advantage of the slant6 for a turbo you'd need an air-water intercooler which are surprisingly rare in the aftermarket

He always said that although they weren't quite as fast on top end as the 440 Plymouth Gran Fury cars they had immediately prior, those 318 & 360 Diplomats just WOULDN'T break, no matter what.

VISIORACER- Your instincts about the V10 are spot on. Chrysler produced the world's first production variable-valve timing pushrod engine with independent intake and exhaust phasing. The system is called CamInCam, and was first used in the 600 horsepower SRT-10 engine for the 2008 Dodge Viper. Now it's 645HP and 6600 RPM redline! Weight? 3368lbs.

Dodge 318 Cummins Definitely is my lil 340 blew the doors off of my buddies 74 454 Vette in an 1/8 mile and I'm banging gears the Vette was a TH400 auto! I know it's only an 1/8 mile and in the 1/4 he probably would have got me but still my lil Duster hauls ass.

Of those, I've only not had the 340. (Cubic inch engines. Haven't had a metric engine.) Also, you left off (and I never had) the 400 B, 413 RB 426 Wedge, and the famous 426 Hemi! 360 was a smog version of the 340, and it was a POS. The Slant Six, is, without a doubt the most reliable engine Chrysler made. I was sad when Chrysler stopped making them, and the B- RB engines. steve

Actually, the SOHC 3.5L EG based engines used from 1993 all the way to 2010 were wonderful, reliable engines. At the end of it's life it, it produced ~260HP and didn't really change much over its lifetime.

One thing I would like to point out is the "Wedge" engines were called that because of the wedge shape of the COMBUSTION chamber... I know you DID mention this name and made reference to why they were called this, but it can be a bit confusing if people don't understand WHY this name was used. Keep up the great work. I would've included the Slant Six. They're not very fast in stock form (except for the Hyper-Pak 170) but they are among the most (if not the most) reliable Chrysler engines to date, and with a few simple mods (carburetor, exhaust, cam) they can achieve decent power numbers, and can give a V8 a good run for it's money.

Lmao, aren't the 1960s situated between 1958 and 1978? And the 440 is just one of the displacements the RB came in. Just the same as the 383 and both 413 and 426 Wedges. It's the same as metioning, say, the BMW M52 engine without mentioning all the displacements it came in- the engine basically stays the same, only has a different bore and/or stroke.

One of the most under appreciated Mopar engines is the OG SRT8 motor, the 6.1l Hemi. It's sole purpose was as a power plant for first gen SRT8 lx platform cars. 425hp/420tq

I had a 1970 Duster with a slant six. It always started in the coldest of winters, got over 30 miles to the gallon and it was one car I could work on. You could go to an auto wreckers and pick up parts like alternators and starters and install them yourself for dirt cheap. There was lots of room to work on the engine if needed. I put over 600,000 miles on it and gave the car to a friend and he drove it for years. As long as you could keep the body of the car in shape, who knows how long one of these motors would last. I had a 1978 Dodge Aspen with the slant six. This engine was called the super six. this slant six was slighter bigger at 225 ci and it has a 2 barrel carb which gave the engine a bit more power and smoothness. I had that car for years as well. The 340 , 383 , 318 and 440 engines were not mentioned. The 383 was a great engine as well as the others. My dad had a 1965 Chrysler Windsor with the 383. You could stand beside the car and the engine was so smooth you could hardly hear it run. The Windsor was replaced by the Newport.

KW eightthree It's a 50/50 chance just like any vehicle. My dad swore his whole life he would never own a dodge, now he has 3 he's on his 5th dodge. He is a ford guy but doesn't trust ford anymore, the only manufacturer to give him any issues was gm. And those gm vehicles most blew the transmission not ford dodge nissan etc.

There were a few other atuomakers who experimented with it long before them. However, Chrysler and AMC were the first automakers to experiment with electronic fuel injection in 1958. They both scrapped it because at the time the technology wasn't ready, the components were crap and especially susceptible to the elements.

Look up Cadillac V8-6-4. As far as I know, GM was the first to use cylinder deactivation back in 1981, (although they would probably rather forget it). Not many people remember it because it, like the Diesel Cadillac V8, was an unmitigated disaster.Two fiascos, along with the Cimarron, just about destroyed the brand. But it's proven to be a good idea in principle, though, so maybe it just wasn't technologically feasible back then.

Everyone forgot about the jeep i6 4.0, which didn't make any crazy hp, about 195 at its peak, but when dropped in the xj cherokee, it was the most powerful compact suv on the market (it was also one of the first compact suvs when amc first introduced it) and they could last FOREVER. Mine has 300k miles on it, and still meets factory compression specs. I have seen them with over half a million miles without ever being opened up for repair. Not to mention, exhaust and intake were on the same side, making it perfect for turbo applications and you can use an amc 4.2l crank to make a 4.5-4.7l stroker motor out of the 4.0, with 505 performance making a 5.0l version and newcomer racing making over 900 horsepower out of his turbo stroker.

Sucks that the "new hemi" is so unreliable compared to the old schools. Head gaskets and valve seats dropping off into the cylinder. The srt4 was the only neon even worth a damn, the ram v10 was a torque monster but unreliable long term if the rockers don't break under the valve cover.

The 8.0l V10 is not a 5.9 with two more cylinders. I just did the math, if you were to slap two more cylinders on the 5.9, it would be a 7.375 liter V10.

It has a longer piston stroke. 3.88 inches vs 3.58 inches. Bore is the same at 4.00 inches. That longer stroke is where you make up the 0.6L of displacment.

Previously owned V-10 trucks, a '98 and a '01. With the 3.55 gears you could get 18 MPG on the highway with the 5 spd. But hook up a 30' trailer or drive around the city, lucky to get 9 MPG. No they aren't. About the only thing top fuel dragster engines have in common with 60's era hemis is cylinder count. They are manufactured by companies that specialize in high-performance engines and the blocks are replaced after a handful of runs. They do have hemispherical heads to optimize intake volumes but not all hemispherical heads come from Chrysler. For example the gm 4.3l vortec v6 came from the factory with hemispherical heads.

They blew head gaskets under duress. If you run anything without water it will crack heads. Change the head gasket at first sign of failure, make sure deck is still flat, and get all air out of coolant system. They didn't catch fire, that's bullshit. If they did it would have destroyed chrysler.

Another really good engine is the 5.2L V8. It's not the most powerful, 230 HP, 300 Ft-Lb (407 N.m), but it is really reliable and durable. The one in my Jeep Grand Cherokee is the original engine with 360,500 miles, 580,000 Km. The only internal parts that I've replaced are the the lifters, oil pump, and timing set, and it still runs well. Since it's basically just a multi port fuel injected version of the old 318 V8 with a roller lifter cam, another very durable engine, it's a very well engineered and well-built engine. And, although it's actually an AMC design, the 4.0 L fuel injected in-line 6 built by Chrysler is also known for incredible durability.

There are plenty of amazing Chrysler engines. the 6.1 hemi 6.4, 6.2, 5.7, 4.7, 5.2, 5.9 360, 5.9 12v 24v cummins even though they're not dodge engines. 426 hemi, 440 6 pack, 440 wedge, 426 wedge, 383 225 slant 6 all amazing engines i could go on as well. All are reliable if taken care of like any engine.

Interesting tidbit on the original hemi's: Oddly enough the hemi was developed during the Korean war when Dodge/Chrysler expected to have high gas prices following the war with only lower octane fuels being available, and thus wanted an engine that could run with lower compression ratios, thus they developed the hemispherical design. It was terrible design from a combustion standpoint since it has no quench space and a huge combustion chamber, but the alternate locations of the I/E valves made them nice from a flow standpoint. The fuel problem never did materialize and other manufacturers moved to smaller fully machined wedge-shaped chambers for higher CRs for leaded fuel. But the Hemi remained.

guifrakss HP/L does mean something - how efficently an engine is using it's displacment to make power, it just dosn't matter at the end of the day. An "inefficent" 500HP LS7 will still eat an "efficent" 220HP K20 alive in the same car. Personally, I think the best mesure of how efficent an engine truly is is how much power it produces compared to how much fuel it uses compared to how much material (external size and weight) the engine is made out of.

One of a VW Jetta with a 1.8L tuned to 400 horsepower, now you have a Dodge Viper with a 8L V10 making 400 HP, of course the 8L sounds more appealing. Being outside of the US, never quite got the appeal of Chrysler though they certainly could have done more with the Slant-6 engine based on what was investigated in the experimental department (e.g. all-alloy, OHC, turbo, diesel / turbodiesel, Slant-4, etc) plus an all-alloy V8. There was also the Simca Type 180 engine that allegedly drew much from the BMW M10 engine, which along with the related M30 (and smaller M20 plus M21 diesel) also spawned stillborn M10-based V8 and M30-based V12 engine projects (prior to the M20-derived M70 V12). One can only imagine such engines coming about in better circumstances.

Appreciate giving Chrysler some love, but you missed a few: -318 V8 and Slant 6: Long-standing workhorse engines, and two of the most reliable engines around (my 318 is going on 350k miles without a rebuild). -340 V8: Coming from the same LA series as the 318, the 340 had a fair measure of reliability, but more importantly was a high-winding powerhouse that could virtually keep up with most of the big block engines of its time. Discontinued in either '73 or '74, they're hard to come by now and sought after by rebuilders/collectors, so they go for a pretty penny if found. -440 V8: Chrysler's biggest old-school powerhouse short of the 426, having less horsepower but more torque than the Hemi. It was used in the Charger Daytona that rocked Nascar, and even set a 200mph Nascar speed record. (Fun fact: it was also used in the escape charger in the Bullitt chase scene, and the chase Mustang 390 had such a hard time keeping up that the charger's driver had a hard time pacing down for the Mustang while making it look like a realistic chase).

I have always loved and admired Chrysler for their heavy commitment to no BS power and RWD platform; keeping fun vehicle dynamics (unlike so many mfgrs for a while that were killing off all rear drive platforms due to less cabin room and general what I call “puss-ball money politics” that would have most if not all cars plowing all day long with xverse layouts on cars that just need to be RWD to not be ridiculous (Impala, Monte Carlo, Taurus, every full-size car with more than a 4-cylinder in it).

Yes, if you are into speed. But the 318 v8 with 727 trans was a combination that was almost invincible. Had an '85 p/u I drove for 17 yrs. When I realized that the only original parts left were the engine, trans, and the strip where the wipers went.I retired the truck. 3 frames,2 cabs ,2 boxes, seats, well you get the picture. Oh yeah, and it plowed snow every year of it's life....

The Viper V10 is not the 5.9 with two extra cylinders. It is its own engine, completely separate from the LA and Magnum engine series. The truck V10 is the 5.9 with two extra cylinders, making 8.0L total displacement.

I went to a drag strip with my dad and it was only Chrysler, Dodge and Jeeps there was also a cheeky Datsun with a Hemi. But it made me love the engines. Most pulled 15-10 seconds. The fastest car there was a Dodge Neon 8 seconds.

The Viper was produced in 3 generations not in 2 while displacement wise we can talk about an 8.0, 8.3 and an 8.4 L SRT/10, depending on the year of production and the model in which it was used. The Ram SRT/10 a.k.a. the Viper truck was powered by the exact same unit which could be found on the second generation Vilep, to be more precise the 8.3 L version
