This guy knows it all. Amazing! Would love to buy from his shop. I just got (2 weeks back) a 2010 911 Carrera 6MT and a well maintained car with clean carfax (lucky to find such a car) and love it. The sound was a bit loud when I startup and noticed it had the muffler bypass, a shark werk exhaust. I was told it was very nice.

Excellent Vid - I was told when replacing my clutch to not touch my RMS seal even if it was sweating as there are many complaints that replacing them will cause them to leak even worse than the old ones.
@GT380man
@GT380man 10 ай бұрын
I don’t think that can be right. Perhaps the shop that told you that had a bad outcome or two, changing both IMS & RMS, when only one had been leaking. After the job, they’d induced a leak, perhaps by accidentally damaging the new seal during installation or worse, scratching the housing in which the seal sits. Otherwise, a seal that’s replaced properly is no more likely to fail immediately than one in a new car right off the production line. Some procedures are technically more difficult than others. I’ve replaced all sorts of seals in motorcycle engines & some removals are downright difficult. There are tools to make it easier but there’s always a risk of damaging a housing & it can be very easy to destroy a newly installed seal by failing to follow proper procedure during reassembly. Classic problem on many older bikes is the kickstart shaft seal. It’s so easy to nick the seal while slipping the seal over the shaft. Some workshop staff are less skilled, less knowledgeable or less diligent than others. All this emphasises how important it is to entrust your vehicle to people to know all about them, know how to do every possible mechanical task and, crucially, are personally committed to doing a great job of anything they take on as a business. For example, I don’t think FGP does painting. It’s a highly specialised area. So they farm out paint to a trusted partner, while standing behind that work, which is appropriate but by no means always done.
@space_114v2
@space_114v2 10 ай бұрын
@@GT380man The reason to not touch the RMS unless leaking would be due to the well documented cases of cylinder case halves being mis-matched ever so slightly at the mating surfaces from the factory and therefore disturbing the existing seal can make the issue you are trying to resolve worse.

It’s the engine number beginning with 386..... that have had the IMS issue etc rectified. So it’s on late 2006 onwards cars. Luckily mine was a 386 numbered engine. Got my 997.1 C2S with 27k miles, 1 owner, the EXACT spec I wanted which I couldn’t believe (extended leather, Bose, heated seats, hardback wingback bucket seats with embossed headrests, PSE, PCM... etc etc) and was maintained/serviced maticulously and kept in a heated garage. The leather was brand new, the grain on the steering wheel looked untouched. A very lucky find plus it was a built to order car and he selected the 19” Carrera Sport Design wheels with the nice fat 305’s on the rear and 245’s up front. I put 20k miles on it within 16 months 🤣. I always add ZX1 oil/fuel additive to my Porsche’s. It creates a layer of protection that sticks and gets into every nook and cranny where oil doesn’t reach so well. Plus when you add a 50ml shot to your fuel every 25k miles it creates a film on the cylinders thus protection from bore scoring. It lasts for 25k miles in the engine but I still add it every 10k miles when I change the oil anyway. Love your video’s and the great work you’re doing 👌🏻

Hi, nice video. I have a 2005 997. In reference to the PASM set up, I quite agree, I find the setup too firm for the road if activated. Perhaps it should be referred to as Road and Track, or Firm and Very Firm! In the manual Porsche say 'In Normal mode the running gear is a sporty and comfortable setup. Sport mode offers a markedly sporty shock absorber tuning (e.g. for driving on the race circuit).' Also if you drive hard in Normal more, the PASM settings are automatically activated. According to the manual.

Absolutely superb video Luke, excellent helpful information that will undoubtedly assist all of us looking at 997’s for their next car. Stand out point for me was the IMS info as I’ve always been lead to believe than all Gen1’s had the IMS issues and all the Gen2’s didn’t hence why I haven’t looked at Gen1’s…Until I watched this vid 😃 One question though Luke…is the engine number you put on the screen the one for the later internal bearing model or the weaker earlier external bearing model? Once again…great vid 👍..Although you could’ve included some footage of the bench press in the corner being used 😄💪🏻

Excellent Vid guys ! I have a 997.1 similar spec to the the black 997 in this video (ie, the sports chassis). I've noticed a small amount of green liquid underneath the car, which i suspected was a coolant leak. I'll now investigate the condition of crossover pipes on my vehicle. Another common issue stone chips causing damage of the AC condensers (ie, loss of AC refrigerant), however i noticed the black vehicle already had some mesh installed in the front bumper area to mitigate this problem.

Excellent video! Just the kind of information I am looking for. I bought a '06 997 a week ago and am still trying to find out all about it. My engine # is: M96/05 69603.21. Do you think I have the servicable or non-servicable IMS bearing? I have no idea and it would sure give me some peace of mind if I knew. I heard the M96.05 engine does not have the suspect IMS. Can you shed any light on this for me? Also, what is a "tandem pump"? I don't have PASM. Thanks for a great channel!
@shaunleecollins778
@shaunleecollins778 3 жыл бұрын
PASM is very intuitive. Not only does it stiffen the dampers so it’ll rattle your teeth out but it performs thousands of calculations a minute or whatever and when cornering it further stiffens whichever is the outer side and slightly softens the inner side for perfect cornering.

As a remember the cost was well over £1000 and maybe as high as £1500 although covered by warranty. After seeing your video and presently contemplating buying an older 997 and the extent of problems they have what would you allow as a contingency for the sort of repairs that are normally needed. Also what year of 911 are least problematic.

Hi 1mediaUK. That’s incorrect. A Carrera S car with PASM is 10mm lower than a Carrera without (and also without M030 of course). The car doesn’t drop 10mm when PASM mode is selected, it is 10mm lower at all times. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

The red one is stunning, most definitely remove the orange decals!

Those orange stickers look absolutely wank. The car would look so much better back to stock.

Original or OEM+ is the way to go on those 911 sport cars.

Not having a mic on you while driving is really hard to take. If I turn the volume up to hear you then the car noise cancels you out. Harry Metcalf puts his mic on the offside and he gets some really noisy cars and then drives them really hard. Lol Anyway, is the internal IMS bearing a better design and less prone to failure than the previous external design? And can those models with the earlier design be switched over or will the block casting not accept that? I'm sorry, but I don't know what that tandem pump is that you mentioned. I'm as curious about everything I see and here at 70+ yo as I was as a kid. Lol Almost forgot. I want to see that blue 911 there. I think that has become my favorite Porsche color.

IMS bearings are a risk on any M96/97 engine car but isnt there also a risk or replacing it without full engine strip down? Pulling at a tight bearing puts stress on the shaft, cogs & chains causing potential other issues.

Hi Gary, thanks for your comment. We have changed 100's of these bearings and never had a problem.

Great vids, beautiful cars. The music is loud and annoying though.

Hate to tell you, I have a 2006, C2S with the larger bearing, and it was bad, lucky to catch it before it wrecked the engine. ALL ims bearings can go bad, just less likely with the larger bearing.

How are these cars with higher miles? I’m curious if used models with average mileage can be good daily drivers if you give them TLC and make needed repairs. Fairly reliable ?

Hi Sean. They’re well built cars. Just ensure they’ve had work carried out like we’ve done in this video and they should make a great daily driver.

I have a 2007 911 Carrera with 40,000 miles, do I need to be concerned about the IMS/RMS issue? Anyone? The car was originally delivered to London Ontario Canada and found it’s way to New York.
