I was disappointed by Fourth Wing too. It had pacing problems and the story seemed very derivative of other books in the genre. I get that all stories are derivative of other stories, to some extent, as there are only a few basic types of stories, but Fourth Wing did not differentiate itself enough for me to feel like it was its own world and believe that the characters were original with their own perspectives. My least favorite book this year was Stygian by Sherrilyn Kenyon. Part of my problem with it was that I usually LOVE her books, but this one was so long and underwhelming for me. The love story was a peripheral side plot at best and the female main character had no character development during the little time she was on page. I was so disappointed since I had been looking forward to the male main characters story since he had appeared in other books and I had love him in those books. A lot of the twists also felt like Dais ex machina instead of actual earned plot developments. I wanted to DNF the book so much, but it has a lot of plot development for the over arching series so I felt I had to at least get through it.

I'm impressed you kept most of these books for the whole year. When I don't like a book it goes on the unhaul pile and then to the used bookstore. I just DNF'd Kingdom of Sweets by Erica Johnson, I just didn't really get into it and now that Christmas is passed don't really want to read a Nutcracker retelling.

I remember trying Kingdom of the Wicked and yeah; just not for me :) Being bored is the worst on a book. I have dnf'd books at 50% because I was bored and just didn't care about the characters.

3:40 I’m so glad we share the same opinion on the MC 😭😭 I felt like such a hater for not liking her. I finished it for the male lead

I totally agree with you about Fourth Wing. For me though I had great difficulty getting past what I saw as a very toxic relationship. I tried to push past this aspect of the story but I just couldn't.

I know I commented when you first said you didn’t like Hexwood but I gotta make a case for it again cause it’s my favorite book by my favorite author. DWJ tends to write very densely and it can be easy to miss stuff on a first read and I know that kind of writing is not for everyone. But if you do really want to try more to like it! I think a reread would help! And if you’re not feeling that, don’t give up on the author because she has so many to try and she really is a master of the craft. There are two more books set in the world of Howl, and some of her other more straightforward books are like, the Chrestomanci books, the Dalemark quartet, Eight Days of Luke, or the Homeward Bounders.

James Bond fan? Have you read any of the Bond novels by Gardner? I read License Renewed & found it to be... interesting. Q is a woman nicknamed, "Q'ute". Need I say more?

Yay, I finally found someone who thinks Fourth wing is meh! I keep telling people if they wanted a great romantasy with Dragons, they should pick up G A Aikens dragon series. I know it's been out for a long time, way before booktok was a thing but it's such a great series.

Fourth Wing was the worst book I read in 2024. I am ex military and the things in this book simply did not make sense and were totally illogical.

I''m so glad to see The Luminous Dead on this list. I am baffled every single time this gets recommended on because it's SO BORING. A book has never failed to deliver on its potential or even it's fucking cover art for me.
