Why doesn’t Austin city help these nonprofits instead of spending millions on abandoned hotels

The comment on sub-divisions is SO true. So the last few years I've been thinking about how a REAL neighborhood would look and function and low and behold, it exists in my own city! This proves that happiness is living life with purpose.

I'm from a bigger City and I'm living in the Suburbs in Austin just for a few Months. I did this in California too. You would think people would talk and make friends in the Suburbs, but people keep to them selves. People are nice here, but Downtown Austin is way more friendly than here in the Suburbs.

Can someone help me understand, this looks so wonderful and it seems to be working. The only problem I've ever heard about this place is that People want to be there so much that there is a long waiting list..... There's money allocated to solve homelessness, in the local government (I've forgotten how much) but my question is why can't that money go towards what is working? If it can't go directly to this place why can't there be a connection to this place? Why not follow it and expand what works? What am I missing?

Because all the state mayors have to meet in Honolulu to discuss how to solve the "problem" of homelessness and all the middle class have an us and them attitude not understanding how easily us could become them in a heartbeat, an accident, an illness, a death in the family. Because it's greed amongst the rich and the rest of the comfortable useful idiots feel a sense that God put them in their status of life. That's what I think.

I commend you for your charitable spirit, honesty to address the problem at it's root and all the work you have done to alleviate the pains of poverty. But I also see the extreme uphill task you are facing, having to swim against the current where most others who can do what you are doing, are not willing to.

Give these people a tiny house, in a few years, most likely months they'll be junked out, unlivable, The problem is they want the government to help them, people have to help themselves. Victim thinking will be the end of us.

There's definitely those types of people, but there are a great many people that just need a little help without the scorn. I'm all about helping folks that are ready to be helped. You obviously can't just throw money at the problem. You need to throw compassion and COMMON SENSE at it as well.

So you plan to take care of vagrants all their life?
@rr7firefly
@rr7firefly 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe you missed the part about how these people pay rent. It may not be the Austin average but they still pay for their housing. One of the problems in this country is that rental properties are run increasingly by corporations whose primary interest is to charge as much money as possible. You may have heard of slum lords who do not maintain their properties? That is another aspect of the problem.

@@markhenderson308 Right off, I have to like someone whose nickname is Arugula. You are one of the fortunate ones who have found a niche where personal dignity is maintained. I used to live in San Francisco, so I sometimes had to step over people on public sidewalks who had basically checked out. A slow version of suicide -- just enough drugs to maintain oblivion. My comment to James was that it was easy to say someone needs to work, but matching people to an actual job is not that easy. All kinds of considerations come into play: Do they have transportation? Are they physically and mentally fit to assume the responsibilities? etc etc. Thanks for your generous invitation. If I am in Austin I will look for you. Whereabout?
