I have said it before if you want reliable expansion you need velocity. Velocity is what made the old school 357 Magnum ammo perform so well and is still doing so today. Everything expands out of a 357 Sig and 357 Mag!

​​@@kennethferguson4283yep. Or a well designed bullet. If you want to shoot .45 for self defense, you absolutely need either a full sized pistol or a light-for-caliber bullet. HSTs, on Tools' channel, will open up and perform as low as low 800s. Get ya some light .45 HSTs, and you're set. Sidenote, I personally don't fiddle with .45 in anything smaller than full sized. Or .380 at all for that same issue.

That projectile at 205 grains can easily be safely pushed to 1000-1025 fps in a +p loading. Federal usually makes excellent SD ammo, but they really dropped the ball on this load.

buyers beware. this i why i love this show. honest testing every time. even though i have reloaded over 45years many, many calibers and firearms im always looking for newer, better bullets. these vidows save me time and money from randomly buying bullets to reload and test that are failures. I'm serious, pay 20.00to 50.00 dollars a box of 100 bullets and then find there trash. and accumulated 5 to 15 boxes of trash bullets then it definitely hurts the bank account. so I'm so great full for all the testers ont there giving free honest testing and opinions. plus non reloaders saving hard earned money seeing what ammunition really live up to expectations. papa wishing you well 😊

My gunstore gave me a box of twenty of this Federal in the video when I bought my 1911, my first gun. I got a two boxes of ammo: a box of 50 for the range, which was 45 FMJ Aguila. And then he asked if I wanted defense ammo, and I said yes. He then handed me the stuff in this video. I'm a new gun owner, so I didn't know that this was a bad choice. My gun store has lots of different varieties and brands, and he chose for me. So, yeah, I have 20 of these, some in my mags and one in the chamber. Should I just switch to the Aguila FMJ? Is this ammo really that bad? What defense ammo do you recommend in 45 ACP?

Total junk, incredibly slow even though 5" bbl. It was only like 826 fps at the gel. Totally worthless especially since you can get as much velocity out of a good 230gr FMJ load or more!! Never priced any of these bum rounds but pretty sure you can get 230gr FMJ for less than this mess!! I am a .45acp enthusiasts but this stuff makes it look feeble.. Thanks for the test, Bro!! The Syntech range ammo would be really cool if they actually sold it for a reasonable price. It was supposed to be a cheaper alternative since it didn't have a copper jacket, but it costs more than traditional range ammo.

Honestly, I don’t understand manufacturers. They know most people are buying/using smaller barrels for concealed carry; why not design for that and vary the weight and charge as necessary to get the expansion expected. 🤷‍♂️

If you don't want expansion, you buy the Hornady critical duty they expand to a little over 50 caliber and have 22 inches of penetration in denim +gel tests. They whoop ass. Want less penetration and a 70 caliber expansions, you can get hst. But, this?

45 ACP is notorious for not expanding or for very little expansion. If it’s a caliber you depend on for urban self defense, you should consider using 185 grain bullets at +P pressure. Self defense guru Massad Ayoob recommends this load from Remington’s lineup. That’s good enough for me.

It always seems that manufacturers struggle with .45 acp. It's such a big, heavy slow moving round that needs more speed or reformulation of the projectile. There's only a handful of 45 rounds I would trust to preform as intended in a self defense situation.

Back in the day, Federal used to sell blue bullets. The coating was called “Nyclad”. Just a blue coating over a lead bullet. These that you tested aren’t Nyclad coated, are they?

I remember the Nyclad line from the 1980's-90's era. They were their standard, soft, swaged lead bullets with a nylon coating. The idea was the soft lead would still deform/expand, but not leave lead fouling in the barrel. If I recall correctly, they worked fairly well, but they were dropped from production when the media started making claims about coated bullets being cop killer bullets.

​@@stansdds I have some of the 38 Special Nyclads. I sometimes carry them in revolvers that are not plus P rated. The Nyclads were highly recommend for snub nose revolvers back in the 70's & 80's. In my way far from scientific test, LoL, I've found the Nyclads have very rapid expansion - but shallow penetration.

This video was a real shame as I ALWAYS choose Federal ammo for my self defense rounds. As a hand loader, I choose Federal primers above all others because they are softer than all other primers. I guess anyone can design an “iffy” bullet, but I love Federal components.

Lower velocity than stated, small HP cavity and one that appeared to plug easily, and it's a recipe for non expansion. I should also mention that Federal probably uses a one size fits all alloy for all their lead HP ammo, and the coating is probably harder on a BHN scale than the alloy itself, which is usually the case. I cast and coat lead HP bullets for all my handgun and some rifle calibers I shoot. To get reliable expansion, you first start with a velocity range you're going to be shooting at and build your HP bullet with a cavity design as in shallow, deep, narrow or wide and lead or lead based alloy that expands properly with that velocity range and bullet. That's why they call bullet casting and art and a science, it's not that hard to get excellent results, but it does take some testing instead of using a one size fits all approach.

You know ive had the same results with them in 45 with a 4,5 and 6" bbl but I've had great success in the 9 and 40 i did 10 shots in different beaters, water jugs, clay, gel and pad of paper and no prob except paper lol but both rounds did great the 45 did expand 2 time out of 10 shots with the 6" only, i personally believe they're not fast enough

The 9mm version is a great round. This .45ACP failed in the jelly. Disappointing, but I wonder how it would compare in actual flesh. I wanna see some Paul Harrell meat target type tests

It isn't just this round and caliber, it's any jhp in any caliber that fails to perform as advertised, and there are alot of them. With this in mind it should be easier to understand why some of us, myself included, choose to skip the foreplay and carry fmj at a fraction of the cost. At least we know it's gonna work. While the over penetration claim against fmj for carry is legit I have yet to see any documented proof that any innocent was hurt and anything was damaged due to the projectile being an fmj. What I have seen however are countless examples of innocent being hurt and property being damaged from errant shots, as in the shooter missed his intended target and hit someone or something he wasn't shooting at and this happens no matter the type of projectile used. My sure to be unpopular opinon is that alot of so called fancy jhp's are nothing more, nothing less than well planned marketing ploys to dupe good people out of their money wthout delivering the goods.

Pass through accidents are extremely rare, and it's difficult to find documented evidence of them. Fear of Over Pen is crazy interwebs driven nonsense. I'm Not saying it doesn't ever happen but the incidence of such is rare. It's almost always errant shots.

i know i’m an idiot and my options don’t amount to a hill of beans, but leaving the ballistics gel in the sun like that may affect its performance. maybe put a sun shade over the top of it so it can sit in the shade. just a thought. i love your work though!
