19:25 in this moment, when Schlacht is saying "demons will be fighting for their survival in a thousand years from now", he's not talking about the current timeline, but rather FAR into the future, because remember, in this flashback they were just about to face and kill the Hero of the South, and when Frieren met him, he said to her "one year from now, I'll lose my life at the hands of Schlacht the omniscient" and he also said "soon, a young hero will visit you" talking about Himmel, which means Schlacht flashback in Macht's memories takes place around the same time the Hero Party gets formed, which happened around 90 years ago from current timeline. And that's the scary thing about it all, because if Schlacht was able to see that far into the future, everything that has happened so far were all calculated as part of his mastermind plan for demons survival... And over 900 years from now, they'll come to fight for it.

The story of Macht and Gluck turns the "make a deal with devil" trope upside down. Both are fascinating fleshed out characters. The story of ch 90 could be a hundred chapter story arc in another manga. Ch 89 twisted my brain. First was the use of foresight to talk to Frieren directly, but then the little reveal about the Demon King. What was the Demon King? The most powerful demon, the only one perceptive enough to see Frieren's suppressed mana and the one who taught a reclusive researcher about the idea of convergent evolution? He is truly an enigma. And the full package of endgames bosses. All stats maxed out.

19:41 well, Macht DID know about her name and we already know this, when he asks Denken who she is and Denken says she's Frieren, Macht comments that Denken always loved to hear the adventures of the party of heroes. So he knew the "name" Frieren, but he didn't know who the elf standing in front of him was. Frieren herself is the one who says that he forgot about her (chapter 86, page 11) and you can clearly see there Macht is a little confused.

The Convergent Evolution bit is to draw a parallel with Humans and Deamons. There's also a question about how the DK knew evolutionary theory. Was Truck-Kun involved? Personally I think not. It seems more likely that the DK was ancient and intelligent enough to have learned it, possibly by watching it happen.
@blaqueup3 ай бұрын
That's kind of my guess too. Natural selection and such is like, something that can be put together with enough observation. Alfred Russel Wallace came to basically the same theory as Darwin in the same time in a similar situation (round-the-naturalist trip). They did have some different views (for example, Darwin thought that humans could be explained entirely through just natural seleciton, Wallace thought more had to be there), but it was still there. And in the 700s there was an Arabian guy who had a very primitive version. So yeah, the Demon King just kind of figuring it out, especially with like you said, able tos ee some of it happening in "real time" more easily, makes sense. The use of convergent evoltuion is probalby just so us modern readers can understand it quicker.
@ObiwanNekody3 ай бұрын
@@blaqueup indeed. It also possibly contrasts with Serie, who is possibly even more ancient and seems to have learned little beyond just magic. Of course her intuition being so strong may be her massive weight of experience, it just isn't as simply framed as Solitare or the DK references are.

@@ObiwanNekody Kind of a funny bit with that, this is a bit why I think Frieren keeps going for chests even if they're mimics. The scariest part of the manga, the entire manga, is that Schlacht has that brief aside to Frieren. This strongly suggests that everything that has happened is within his expectations for the future he wished to come to be. Of course maybe he just says that to everyone before they get memory wiped, just in case because Frieren is that scary to him... I want to say more but I can't remember if you have read something yet so I'm not going to at this time.

The interesting thing is that the Hero of the South has the same power as Schlacht, and they are said to be equals. So every future Schlacht as seen, the Hero of the South has also seen, and every act or manipulation Schlacht has done to try to push the future in a certain way, the Hero of the South has also seen, and decided "that's ok, I can allow that." And it's all supposed to come to a head in some event 1000 years in the future that will determine whether demonkind will survive or be exterminated. Schlacht has bent all his efforts, up to the sacrifice of his own life, to ensure that demons do survive (or so he says). But what did the Hero of the South see? What has he done, if anything, to push the future in a direction HE wants, and if he did, what direction is that? Who between them, in the end, has seen further?
@ObiwanNekody3 ай бұрын
@@adamwu4565 it's problematic because while their powers are said and seen as equal, Schlacht references timelines further along than the Hero of the South, so he maybe made better use of that power. Their goals also may not have been directly in opposition... We will have to see.

Totally understable to read one more. In this flashback over chapters to get a good stop point is hard. 19:41 "So Macht totally knew what her name was at least!" - Well no. Everything about the fight against HotS and this conversation leading up to it is erased by Grausam, or in other words everything that hints at "Frieren" is memory to much, what Edel would have read. So to speak Macht has zero clue about Frieren. You made it to my favorite female demon, if one can say so. Well Glück. I hope the tong twister is not to tiresome. Wahrheit pronunciation is both thumbs up. Stay for Solitair with what you had at 2:02 what you said it is not, but it is :) - close enough is pronouncing it like the word at the end "air". Even closer is the beginning of the word "terrace" just used as the ending from "Soli-ter", which uses the loneword terra for earth from Latin and is in German and English super duper close in pronunciation .

@andrewli66063 ай бұрын
I would guess not. I would imagine Macht acts as area denial that HotS would have to completely avoid. Using his foresight, he could easily avoid him, but he’d be pressured into moving into one place.
@ObiwanNekody3 ай бұрын
@@andrewli6606it's more because of why it was so important that Frieren didn't get to see the fight... The sages and their capabilities are known to her at this time, so there has to be some other aspect of the fight that would be problematic for her to have knowledge of. The post fight condition of those who took part in the fight seems to be the most likely motivation. It's also possible that he foresaw the anime and wanted to save on budget by not having the Hero of the South's last battle be animated.
@andrewli66063 ай бұрын
@@ObiwanNekody It seems unlikely it would be a budgetary reason; it's almost certainly a story-related reason. I mean... think of it this way. Let's assume Hero of the South is a golden statue. Frieren finds him and is able to dispel the curse. Now we have a hero stronger than Serie and Stark. He's a storybreaking power. His foresight is way too powerful. It would make more sense that Schlact and Hero of the South killed each other to get rid of each others' foresight. I could come up with another reason. Perhaps Schlact used a power taught by the Demon King or something that would be very bad to have Frieren witness in the future.
@ObiwanNekody3 ай бұрын
@@andrewli6606 the budget reference was a joke... Frieren (the anime/manga) doesn't have a level of insecurity with having it's viewpoint characters needing to be the most powerful, and is very capable of telling a great story for them even with someone as powerful as the Hero of the South in play, if he could be revived from being a golden statue.
