The real problem really is how disingenuous the changes feel. We still have many MK female characters that haven't gotten a good shot in the newer game, specially in the new timeline, yet we have to go again through this tiresome act of pretending we need to genderflip male characters to have good female representation, when MK is a franchise that never lacked good female characters. If anything NRS has done a good job at ruining good female characters with stupid decisions like retconing Syndel's entire character from a deep mother figure with a complicated past into a mustache twirling villain with zero nuance.

If the only point of changing the character’s sex was for the purpose of “representation”, then it’s a bad reason for the change. Cyrax and Sektor were perfectly fine as black and Asian male characters. The best thing for NRS to do would’ve been to create original female characters, but making two of the three Cyber Lin Kuei female does nothing to benefit their character or their roles in the story beyond the statement of “ThErE’s a StRoNk WaHmEn iN MK”.

Mileena/Sindel were great sales DLC from MK11 but they are OG characters. NRS will don't risk to sell Kira or Frost in DLC. Jade is like Mileena coming in KP3. Sonya is like Hanzo coming in MK2. MK2 is Earthrealm focus so we might see Kira and Frost. Sheeva can be kameo.

My main issue is that they are just "power armor" and not the true cyberization. It being armor you can put on and take off doesn't mean much. it doesn't seem remotely "radical" in any way. however the OG cyberization was horrific, tearing your human body apart to the point it could disrupt your soul and make you nothing more than a mind controlled mechanoid with some minor meat parts. THAT is horrifying, but this is much lesser than that and it begs the question what the point is with cyrax and sektor at this point in time. Is it just to show them freak out when Bi han turns into Noob and show how lost he is? if so, they could have brought in Sareena or any number of other characters who knew Bi-Han in previous timelines. Make use of Sareena's original connection to him.

But Special Forces freed Cyrax in the old game and they gave him a costume that revealed that under the armor was a human. He even says “I am human” when he gets his mind back. They weren’t all turned into full automatons, some were cyborgs which are bio mechanical. MK11 showed Androids but also showed that some were still cyborgs like Frost.

My problem with the gender swap is that 1) it's rather lazy of a change. Changes like Liu Kang and Raiden swapping roles lead to actual interesting story stuff, same with Scorpion being Kuai Liang. 2) These characters weren't seen as human since MK9, way back in 2011. So its just rather odd considering that. Even just the designs compared between the two games, the designs in M1K, at least I think, being too busy and just over designed compared to 2011. Now, NRS: please just add you're actual pre-existing female characters. People are begging for Sareena to be added as a fighter.

Sub-Zero and “Scorpion” still end up as enemies, “Scorpion” still gets with Harumi, he just has fire powers and dresses in yellow from the jump because Hanzo did. I think you're onto something, especially since WB Games has been offered and considered for sale for not just once, but twice in the past 3 years, which would mean that while Netherrealm Studios could retain the rights for Mortal Kombat, it wouldn't be the same for Injustice, a multiverse-heavy saga that some of MK1's gameplay and storytelling features would oddly be fitting. Thus the next logical step would be to try to expand MK so they can do everything just within one franchise.

Things like this remind me how multiverse isn't a useful narrative device. It's an easy back door to change core elements (like entire characters) without needing a strong narrative to justify it, only a convenient force of nature. I don't mind Cyrax/Sektor being female, but...when everything abruptly changes and has a back-door version of itself, stories become less focused and cohesive and there are no true stakes.

While this might get me put into the next video like this, the reason for the woke=communist thing is because wokeness/progressivism takes the core principle of communism (the struggle between the bourgeoise and proletariat) and just switches it from a class conflict to a conflict of race, gender, and other characteristics. Communist academics in the 50s and 60s were saying they needed to switch things over because America doesn't have the same sort of rigid class stratification that's present in a lot of European countries. I mean, if you take the Communist Manifesto and swap out "bourgeoise" for "white" and "proletariat" for "black," it would be indistinguishable from anything put out by groups like BLM (whose founder was on tape literally saying the founders of the movement were all Marxists). While I agree with you that the power structure of the GOP is definitely on the left (hence the often used Monoparty label), but that's changing, I don't think that many people consider Concord to be all that good. It's average/below average at best as far as gameplay goes. And the bad character designs, and I'd say the quality of the game itself stems from the wokeness, because a game is truly woke/progressive/whatever lefty nonsense we want to call it when the developer's politics shine through more than their artistry and passion for the game itself - when you know about a character's pronouns than their personality, it's a sign of a crap game. As for The First Descendant, people do bring it up, often to compare it to Concord because TFD isn't lighting the world on fire with super impressive gameplay, but the sheer style of the game and attractiveness of its characters (of both genders) is a massive point in its favor. Honeslty I think Cyber Frost would have made the most sense to add as a female Cyber-Lin Kuei. Especially since Bi-Han will become Noob Saibot and Kuai Liang is already Scorpion. There is no SubZero/Cryomancer in the story after that happens. So Cyber-Frost would work for me. I have a feeling that Female Cyrax is different person to Male Cyrax altogether especially since their Nationalities are as different as a Greek is to a Belgian. Male Cyrax is from Botswana (Southern Africa Country) and Female Cyrax is from Niger (Western African Country). So going off this Cyrax and Sektor are likely titles and that the female ones are different individuals. Tho I do feel they should have had their own name especially since MK12 ( or should I say Em one Kay) should experiment with the idea of new characters. Like MK Legacy had a Cyber Lin Kuei called Hydro who could play like a Cyber Rain for example.

Honestly...they should make 2 male enhanced skins for Cyrax and Sektor so you can choose with who you want to play (I mean the assets are already there)...so everybody is happy. If they can turn Captain Cold into Mr.Freeze and Raiden into Black Lightning in Injustice 2, they can easily do that for MK1. For me...well I want Vorpax! MK Conquest was a ridicolous mess...but I loved it, because some characters were really well potrayed and here and there you can find some good ideas and Vorpax being a "cool" character from the same race of D'Vorah(or at least the inspiration for her) is one of them.

Heck I’ve been speculating that we might get an invasion season centered around Sektor and it would not make sense for him to be female in multiple other timelines. I think people are getting way too whiny about this. The gender swap happened, just deal with it. We don't know what is the story purpose, we don't even know if they're even genderswaps, actually, because these could be two different people using the "Sektor" and "Cyrax" aliases, just like Kuai Liang is using "Scorpion" now. I DO feel like Netherrealm wanted to have the names of Cyrax and Sektor while increasing the amount of female characters (which was indeed lacking, 22 men and only 7 women when you count the first batch of DLC), but I really don't think they could have won here. They wanted characters to side with the Lin Kuei (Shirai Ryu has Scorpion, Smoke and Takeda, Lin Kuei only has Sub-Zero), which would arguably make Frost and Sareena available, problem is, Sareena's story now seems to be more focused on her relationship with Ashrah and Frost being another cryomancer under Sub-Zero (or even a Cyber Lin Kuei) would defeat the purpose of the new timeline being about revamping characters. So they decided to bring two Cyber Lin Kuei to increase the number of members of that faction, which means Sektor and Cyrax would fit perfectly. Of course, they could have made new female characters, but doing that would only lead people to ask why they added those two over Sektor and Cyrax, who are fan favourites. Having Sektor and Cyrax as women fits the timeline's theme of being different and adds more women to the roster, and hell, if you ask me, Noob Saibot would have been an even better fit, make Frost the Noob Saibot this time, since there is no one with the Sub-Zero title once Bi Han becomes that.

When I was a kid, I made my own remixes of existing universes. I might've come up with female versions of male characters or vice versa just for fun. Come to think of it, gender-swapped alternate universe versions exist for just about every superhero I can think of. So, if we're talking multiverses, and with a franchise this old, I think it's fair for them to remix the roster to keep things fresh (especially for characters who aren't exactly major players). But if this change was made strictly to pander and appear as progressive. then it's fair to criticize them for it.

The whole thing about this whole issue and not just in this game is unhinged. I appreciate the attempt 4thSnake but I've long ago accepted that you just aren't going to get rational discourse from some people on this subject who are basically brainwashed into believing absolute nonsense that they repeat over and over. M1K has made me not just hate swaps, but the big thing ive been complaining about is making Kuai Scorpion, doesnt feel like the same character and makes little sense with the lore of how Honzo got his powers at all. Itd be like if Liu Kang just made say, Jax have the personality of Johnny Cage, and Johnny more like Jax, that would alienate the characters, and the Sektor and Cyrax change does this as well, and it takes away all the disadvantages of the cyber initiative and makes then Iron Heart, one Ketchup flavor and the other Mustard flavor.. FYI, WB overall has a DEI team and they worked with Sweet Baby for their biggest flop, Suicide Squad. So NRS was likely either told what to do for this, or did so out of some sort of fear or something..

The game implies that Liu Kang took one of Shang Tsungs flesh pit chimeras (Mileena), magically combined her with the birth of Kitana, then Sindel/Jerrod decided to name her Mileena before training her to….fight like Shang Tsung’s monster. Why does Kuai Liang have fire powers? Oh, well that’s because Hanzo had hellfire powers. Kenshi survives being stabbed in the eyes by sais and at the end of the game, you see other characters die to the exact same attack on the pyramid steps.

I think the main problem with the genderswap related to 2 things: no other character has been genderswaped and there were no female playable (not Kameo) characters in Kombat Pack 1, now in Kombat Pack 2 the only females are genderswaped male characters. They could have used Sonya and Jax (not genderswaping him, just making a part of Kombat Pack 2) or they could have brought Frost (make her the new Sub-Zero now that Bi-Han is going to become Noob), or even bring Jade (who has been teased by her actres), or maybe put a new character like Scorpion's wife Harumi (there is an interesting dialogue between Scorpion and Tanya that implies she isn't actually from Earthrealm). So I haven't played a Mk since X (My favorites being Deception to X games) but kept up with the story, as wells as its ups and downs. So when the Cyrax / Secktor change happened I was annoyed but let it go since I'm not part of the audience they want. By what annoys me about the change is actually 3 main problems with NetherNever studios all together: Pandering, Unoriginality, and Ignorance. Ignorance: They think no matter what they do fans will just enjoy everything they do. Whether that includes Dropping Stories, Changing Characters, Killing Characters, Over-pushing Characters, or Changing Fundamental Elements without answers. So long they give us gorey kills and simple combat they can do no wrong. Pandering: What they are doing to bring more fans who were never fans to begin with. Which if Star Wars wasn't and example is an easy way to push fans away. There are so many Marvel Movie references in M1K that it might as well be Marvel Kombat instead of Mortal Kombat. Then once they get those fans, who only really stay for about 3 months then leave, they have to keep pandering to keep them around or bring them back for another 3 months. Needless Pandering is franchise killing. Unoriginality: The fact that its fans and fan content that keeps MK relevant and entertaining. Even picking up content they tossed aside and making it better than they every could. Where as their only answer is: bring back this, change that, bring back, change, cameo, cameo, cameo. Where is last new character we got that wasn't a child of, gender swap, or alt version of a previous character. It honestly sad, pathetic, and borderline infuriating.

Honestly I think the way to resolve this issue is to give them male skins so that way if players aren’t happy with playing the female versions of them they can switch to their male versions anytime. I’ve been speculating that there might be an invasion season centered around Sektor and it wouldn’t make sense that he’s female in multiple other timelines since this is the first time we’re ever getting a female Sektor. So my guess they’ll make him male for the invasion season and make Cyrax his Titan battle buddy with a male skin too. But also I’ve argued with people saying what if they made Sonya, Kitana, Jade and Mileena male and some people have countered saying they wouldn’t mind the change as long as they still play the same. But it’s not about playing the same it’s about whether they would feel the same.

Kuai Laing, Smoke, Johnny, Kenshi, Kung Lao and mortal Raiden following and having faith in Liu kang is Unhinged. I don’t blame Liu for the Multiverse Shenanigans which we’re all tired of as he no control over anything outside the universe he was able to work on. But what he worked on turned out to be total crap. Many characters have Their toes out on display, Reptile looks like a human most of the time when he should have been made an anthro lizard in a back and green outfit, Baraka is barefoot, We don’t get a Vaeternus stage, The antagonists can’t be taken seriously because they don’t get any wins, The Zarterans have flat faces and are too bulky and naked, Edenia is Outworld when it should still be called Edenia. The races still share a planet resulting in the realm isn’t being quite cramped without Shao Kahn as an excuse, Hanzo isn’t Scopion as he should be, and the Lin Kuei are framed for being street thugs by the very man they serve. Although I don’t agree with working with Shang Tsing and Quan Chi, I think Bi Han was right to turn on Liu Kang. I know what it’s like for the world around you being made in a way that seems to you not right and therefore unacceptable. I adore Bi Han for that. I too hate Liu Kang and would love to show how the universe could be better than what Liu had in mind. Personally I just kinda gave up with MK, this is the first one after the reboot that I dont mind skipping. They can gender bend all of the characters for all that I care, I just watch the youtube videos of how they keep messing up and go buy OTHER fighting games instead 😂 Best of luck to them
