@kennethj195610 жыл бұрын
MrGovenator1 An "Extra Rust Option" for purchase was not available in my memory. But I'm sure the factory installed an 'Extra Rust Bonus' at absolutely no charge for most buyers. This was part of a 'Surprise Option' package many owners discovered at a sooner, rather than later date, along with the foggy crazing clearcoat option.

Yep - just like the 60's and early 70's 911's, and almost everything made by GM back then. {except the Corvette - their frame rusted}. Funny thing is, I still have the 72 240Z I bought new at the end of 1971. No rust so far.. but hey - it only a matter of time.

Car enthusiast's are starting to recognize the Z's. Particularly the 240.
@stephenc69554 жыл бұрын
That Japanese engineering has a whole lot of German in it. The original L series engine is a Mercedes unit licensed to Prince Motor Company which became a part of Nissan. As some point, Nissan changed the block a bit most likely to avoid paying royalties, but the head valve train remained basically the same. Then there's the design, Yoshihiko Matsuo and his team are the designers of the Z, but they did not start from scratch. The 240 was influenced by a Nissan prototype created by a team lead by Albrecht Graf von Goertz. That car was never produced. Many years later, Von Goertz had his lawyer request a clarification from Nissan regarding the design of the 240. This was the reply. At your request, we have examined the relevant evidence pertaining to the development of the highly successful Datsun 240Z which was first introduced in 1969. You were retained by Nissan during the period from 1963 to 1965 as an automotive design consultant. During that period, you consulted with Nissan on the basic methods of styling a general sports car. You were also the sole design consultant on a two-liter sports car which Nissan was trying to develop as part of a joint venture with Yamaha. This car was not produced. While it is our view that the design of the 240Z was the product of Nissan’s design staff, Nissan agrees that the personnel who designed that automobile were influenced by your fine work for Nissan and had the benefit of your designs. Sincerely yours, NISSAN MOTOR CO., LTD. Signed Toshikuni Nyui General Manager Legal Dept.

Nice vid. If the Rat is 'an animal to drive', it's because the suspension needs sorting; stiff doesn't mean difficult. A 240Z is and should be following mods a very easy sports-car to drive at any speed - tha's what made them so good and competitive.
@ryant6710 жыл бұрын
Agreed, but with wide r-comp tyres they can be a real bear at slower speeds. But I suppose the same can be said of just about any non-power steering car... Anyway, once you get used to it, if driving it daily, you barely notice it.

ryant67 Yeah, mine has 225/50s on 8x15 a mix of anti-roll bar thicknesses and steering knuckle spacers at the front...but then I also have progressive PS which filters out all that bad-effect - we fit 'em on all our Zs and even on the track it's brill...I switch it off on wet tracks though - it all happens too fast otherwise :-). I bought a used 73 240Z in 1977, it had about 33,000 miles and was cherry. I was like 24 yrs old, gas was cheap and I had the best times driving the Z. I had one episode while being pursued by a state police car. I had enough of a lead and was coming down Mt. Greylock at high speed. Came to a sharp corner covered with sand,knowing I would'nt make the corner decided to not go for the turn and straight off a 25 ft jump into a hayfield. The cop went by shortly after but never saw us. I looked at my buddy who was totally freaked and laughed. Just one story with the Z I'll never forget.

This is the power and the glory of creating one's own version of automotive heaven for oneself. Datsun Zee's are a prime example of a great car to modify to suit one's own tastes or pocketbook. Easy to work on, lots of tuner, junkyard or NOS parts. They've become a classic in stock or modified form and best of all, they're still fun to drive. Someone mentioned that the Zee's look like a Ferrari 250 and/or a Toyota 2000GT. How about a Zee that looks like both a Ferrari 250 and the Toyota 2000GT? Long live the kit car with a Zee chassis.
