Former employee from 10 years ago! You’re absolutely right- The two finger point is PARTLY related to Walt’s smoking habits, but also absolutely for the rude gestures. Not only because in SE Asia its rude,but also because someone cant say you “pointed with tour middle finger”. I was taught all 3 of these things in my “traditions” class.
@Melissa_Marvel Жыл бұрын
I worked at a different theme park and we had to do the two finger point and the reason we were given was the rude gestures reason. Not sure if Disney started it because of Walt but it's certainly a industry standard for politeness now.

Yeah, I feel like this one is pretty well-known. Almost every Disney theme park channel that posts a listicle about the parks, or the company, almost always mention the "Walt Disney Two-Finger Point" and within a few minutes state that it was kinda partially to do with his smoking habit, but mostly because you don't want to appear rude to others. Maybe it's just me, but I remember learning way back when I was around 5 (I'm turning 36 this month) that you should never point at someone because it's rude, and that it's better to just use your entire hand or other "open" gestures as to seem not as aggressive and it was outside of any Walt Disney context. (The pointing of the finger, especially directly at someone, and the finger point and wag-- you know how like in old TV shows if a young boy got in trouble with his mother and she'd bust out the finger wag and give the "Now you see here young man!" 👉🏻 speech... I wanna say they were pretty fazed out by the early 1990s.) Honestly, I feel like the idea that the Disney Company was "trying to hide Walt's smoking after he passed" to be a bit silly because, everyone knows what killed him, so it would be kinda difficult to try to revise history and say he died of something other than lung cancer.
@thurayya8905 Жыл бұрын
@@cannibalisticrequiemAlthough it is possible to get lung cancer without ever having smoked a single cigarette, it was an open secret that Walt Disney smoked, having come from a generation where it was the norm. When he died, the papers stated that he died of lung cancer, but most tactfully left out his smoking habits.

Some more fodder for your snakes-in-jars speculation (from someone who has put a snake in a jar): That's an amateur job, and almost definitely wasn't done as part of official Discovery Island operations: No labels, janky containers, and overall poor presentation (the Coke bottle is WAY too big for the snake that's in it, and the low level of liquid in the other jars means that the lids aren't airtight and it's slowly evaporating off.) The liquid is discolored, which means it's been sitting around in the bottle for at least a few years... but it's not murky, so either the specimens were properly fixed with formalin, or it had only been a year or two since they were bottled when the picture was taken. I agree that this is someone exploring their hobby... either a cast member brought them from home and just left them there, or an urban explorer brought them in to make things more creepy. I do wonder what species are in there, though, and I'm not good enough with snake IDs to tell from the picture. The one on the left MIGHT be a garter snake, or a juvenile ratsnake?

Pointing was (and still is) considered exceptionally rude in the West, including America. In etiquette schools you are still instructed to never point. This stems from old Western beliefs that pointing was an accusatory or criticizing gesture; it was also associated with the lower class due to the belief they lacked the proper vocabulary to describe situations or directions and thus resorted to and relied upon "primitive" gestures.

I think if I was ever an attraction designer at a competing theme park, and I was working on some heavily-themed E-ticket style ride, I'd sneak a spot into the queue that would look like a cryogenics lab. No explanation, no rhyme or reason for it to be there, just a door that happened to be stuck open with a big glowing tube inside. Just a big glowing tube with a fake set of controls, the silhouette of a man resting inside of it and a label at the bottom reading "W.E.D.", and maybe some fake fog to sell the effect. Again, wouldn't even have to fit in with the theme of the ride, just a fun little wink and nod to the conspiracy nuts out there.

I mean, I can’t tell you how many times litter like that has saved me. Car over heats, pull over to let it cool, look around for a discarded bottle, locate 2yo bottle, fill it up with pond water, and add it to the coolant reservoir, since the radiator itself is still hot AF, and therefore can’t be messed with directly.

No. Paramedics/EMTs can't legally pronounce someone dead unless it's obvious (ex: the head is 10 feet away from the body). Otherwise they take the body to a doctor (at, ya know, the hospital?). It has nothing to do with Disney and people *have* died at Disney, by the way.

I have a theory on the discovery island thing: The staff was documenting and preserving verifiably present local snake species for some kind of research; perhaps relating to saftey or in conjuction with a local university or something and it just happened to be conducted in a very quick or ad hoc manner due to time or budget constraints. A place like Disney is going to want to have a record of snakes on property in case anyone gets bitten or authorities of some kind need information for wildlife managment reasons. When someone gets bitten by a snake the most important thing is to accuratley identify the specific species as fast as possible so you know the threat level of any potential danger and so the correct anti venom can be administered. This can sometimes be dificult if the victim; like a tourist from another part of the world is unfamilar with snakes and also further compounded by the fact many snakes look very similar due to the concept of batsian mimicry being very common among them. Batsian mimicry is that thing where otherwise harmless animals have over time evolved to mimic the appearance of other actual dangerous animals as a means to deter attacker. The coral snake is the most well known example of this. Florida and California both have a lot of snakes and anyone who spends a lot time outside in those places for work or recreation will know its important to keep track of information like that out of sheer neccesity of saftey and before the both the internet and smartphones became so common one of the best ways of doing that was by preserving refernce specimens like we see in the photo. As for the coca cola bottle well perhaps it was all they had at the time and they needed to preserve that particular specimen quickly to avoid decay. The liquid could very well be fermaldahyde as that has historicaly been the chemical of choice for preserving biological specimens. Or its just trolls like you said 😅

Pretty sure Disney never would have allowed people to mess around like that and haphazardly allow someone to store formaldehyde in random containers. My guess it was between 99 and 02, after the park closed down and abandoned and done by an urban explorer. Why? Maybe the specimens were in jars that were valuable in some way. If these specimens actually did belong to Disney, i’m sure that had real containers to put them in. Maybe they were valuable or thought to be collectable. Wonder if there are any pictures out there that could show that they had these specimens on display and then see what containers they were in. Looks like someone, rather than dump the stuff on the floor (probably formaldehyde and it’s dangerous to just dump anywhere), the explorers put them in the containers they had on them at the time to steal the containers.

A series of bland, corporate overpriced lux cabins for honeymooners or the people who can afford DVC memberships. I have some doubts, though--particularly now that construction of "Reflections," a DVC planned resort on the site of the old River Country, seems to have stopped completely. Considering that they actually got to putting in foundations, I'd assume they had the same problem they had when attempting to build another monorail resort just south of the Contemporary, before the water bridge. They simply discovered that the land wasn't strong enough to support anything; and construction ceased. Although there seems to be construction fences on that site as well. Or there were when I visited in 09/2020.
