Math: "Two negatives make a positive" Vsauce: "Two Ls make a W"

Adding two negatives makes a greater negative number. You only wind up with positive results from multiplying or dividing two negative numbers. Alternatively, you can subtract two negatives and wind up with a positive result so long as both numbers are not of equal value.

In a book by Tom Chivers on Bayesian statistics, Chivers uses this example to show that people are inherently Bayesian machines running probabilistic inferences on sense input to make sense of the world. He goes on to claim that our expectation (thus; guesstimation) allows us to not use up all our resources on understanding the world. Knowledge of the exact hex code for a color grey doesn't tell us as much as the context and so we're prioritizing information that enriches our understading over the world rather than exacting information about the world.

Whenever I see someone claim they saw something supernatural, I tend to think of all the optical illusions that easily prove human perception to be flawed. It's amazing how efficient the brain is at putting assumed information into what we perceive, I just wish more people understood that a lot of what we see is simulated by ourselves.
@non-existent883710 күн бұрын
this is the same reason the black and blue/white and gold dress illusion happens. People who see black and blue interpret the image as having a light source behind the camera, lighting up the dress. People who see white and gold interpret the image as the dress being in the shade without a light source behind the camera. The image is taken at an angle where the light source's location is unclear, allowing for misinterpretation. The dress is black and blue.

In other words, it’s a survival mechanism that prioritizes contrast over color. You can survive being colorblind, but contrastblind? You’re screwed. 😂
@oowaz24 күн бұрын
i think that is more just a visual paradox than some kind of "mechanism" or evolutionary strategy. it's just a logic puzzle. you're being presentated with something crafted to look paradoxical, using visual cues you take for granted to play with your perception. it's not really a flaw in how we see things, it's just challenging your comparison skills
@andrewmypocalypse4 күн бұрын
@@oowaz I hear you, but the information is too basic to be a logic puzzle. It’s about pure recognition. We see things for what they are and what they are not in order of importance. “How does this serve me?” Logic is magnitudes above color in my personal opinion. Which, logically, doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.
@oowaz3 күн бұрын
@@andrewmypocalypse it's really difficult to explain this quickly but i'll try: so the way this works is basically playing with how we understand lighting conditions. you're presented with 2 characters where the linework looks exactly the same, the background color is similar (but not the same) you assume they're in the same environment (this is psychological) and they share the same tone for skin (the key of the illusion) EVERYTHING else is different tho: tone of eyes, hair, theeth, even the tone of the linework in the 2nd character is different - why is that? because the idea here is to present the 2nd character in a bright environment (notice how their background is lighter). why? because the 1st character is in a darker environment (this is really important for this illusion) here is the logic part: if the first character is in THE DARK and skin tone looks like X and the 2nd character is in a brighter room and skin tone is also X, then the 2nd character must have a darker skin tone. why? because when exposed to the same lighting conditions as the 2nd character the 1st would have a lighter skin tone.

yeah ive seen a few videos of people picking a colour pallet randomly in greyscale before painting, then putting the colour back on when theyre finished. Because theyve followed tone and light direction correctly in greyscale, the artwork looks amazing when colours are turned back on. Amazing how infrequently used colours can work so incredibly well and look realistic when done right.

Ok so let’s make this illusion even crazier. Can you do the magic eye trick? The kinda reverse cross your eyes to see those crazy 3d pictures from random patterns? Try and do that with the faces when they are side by side. Do it right and they will “lock” into a single center face. But the different colors will kind of “vibrate”. At first it looks like the grey skin color vibrates too. But really focus on it and you’ll see the hair and background is vibrating and it only looks like the skin is doing it by comparison.
