I think the developers intentionally made men in particular come off as threatening in various ways. Especially in a perspective of a woman. Mike was a weirdo with ulterior motives disguising himself as a friend, the dude in the elevator knowing who she was and what floor she worked despite her not knowing him at all, the janitor barging in the women’s stall, to the hitch hiker and fake Rick acknowledging her being alone. The only character Cyd wanted to be there was the friend that got stranded for a bit

I would put money down that the average woman would find this story scarier than the average man would. This plays on the threat of being trapped with strange men who don't understand boundaries or have ulterior motives. It does this from the first damn scene (with the guy barging into the bathroom and then sticking around in the women's bathroom venting about how pissed he is. The guy in the elevator remembering what floor she's on - even stranger that he's on a lower floor than hers. Means the only way he could know her floor is if he took a mental note of what button she pushed, despite her not recognizing him at all. Her good friend being too pushy in a weird way, and then the two men explicitly acknowledging she's alone without any help and threatening to do whatever they wanted to her...) The game dev knew what they were doing, isolating that fear and creepiness from the first scene. This is what horror games should strive for.

I mean a lot of people got it. I was really suspicious from the time we bumped into him in the bedroom. Dude asks us to check in over the phnone but was at the house? Why did he not write a text saying he was going to be at the house to fix something beforehand? Why did he not introduce himself when we arrived and opened the door? Why did he not look up our names on he website or on his phone? Also the outside basement doors directly connecting to his "secret room" also gave it away why he did not want people to see inside it, it was his hiding spot while the cabin was rented, when it was uninhabited by guests he obviously takes over the whole house. There were lots of little clues sprinkled in, not the least why he brought a hammer to fix a faucet.. and snuck into the house again without announcing himself, also stole a guests milk...

Pretty sure this story is more terrifying for women than anything. The fact that the main threats were men but also the fact that each of the scenarios this woman was in would seem like small interactions for men. I will give Fears to Fathom the props that it captures the unique feeling of Any Man Could Be a Threat™. This chapter and Norwood Hitchhike both feel like the strongest installments to me and maybe it’s for that reason, coming from my own subjective experience and how it plays on that for me. I do feel like the horror is 10x more effective for women, especially in those chapters.
