@@foxgd9117 In what way? If you take the manufacturers recommendation of fin size per your weight then yeah I suppose so. But if your more high intermediate to advanced then the recommended Fin Size to weight isn’t necessarily always the right choice. For example, Sometimes a smaller fin on larger waves work better than a large fin, or a smaller centre fin in a tri setup will make a board more lively, and obviously when riding twinnies or 2+1’s the side fins are much larger than a standard tri or quad sets. Recently Kai Lenny is promoting large rear quads over the traditional large front-smaller rear quad sets. So theres actually quite a but of content there to cover.

@@eatsurfsleeprepeat5485your right. Bigger fins in small waves are a option for pros and medium or smaller fins in big waves for less drag, but it doesn’t get that advanced just everyone seems to get it the wrong way around

Great vid about a subject that is often overlooked by many. I remember hearing Wayne lynch say that fins can change 40% of how a board performs/responds.

I have an old Rusty piranha. Really old. Rode it with blackstix for ever. Bought some neutral fiberglass very stiff fins and wow what a difference. They gave the board much better hold in more solid beachbreak. Still like the blackstix but these are my new step up fin set. Felt like old glassed in fins of the 90s

good point! i have the HS2 pivot template (M size) from futures/Haydenshapes, very little less flex than blackstix. i'am 65Kg intermediate+ level. very fast for small waves 50cm to 1.2m weak conditions. depending of your board and size of your tail...for more powerfull waves fins have to control power , not generate it. neutral or rake depending of the shape of the waves (have Mayem neutral for classic break and AM1 honeycomb for open faces).

Twenty years ago I got a board with the EA future fins template, made from solid fibreglass, I could feel they were to stiff but otherwise liked the feel. So, I bought the same template in Blackstix construction. Mind blowing difference! Over the years I collected a few templates that I like in a few different constructions. Always amazed at how such subtle differences can have such a huge impact on how a board feels.

That's interresting. I honestly can't feel much difference between different fins as long as they are same setup and not overly experimental. As long as they are about the same size and look somewhat normal, they will all feel normal too. I think much of it is in marketing and in peoples heads.

your bigger wave board has more rocker, so you can se a stiffer raked fin to add drive, a less rockered board becomes to stiff to turn with carbon stiff fins, (and already has a lot of drive) so you need more flexy fins, with a pivot template, in my experience..

I wish this went a little more in depth as far as varying the size and shape. I just learned the other day that the bigger the wave you want smaller fins because they work with speed, so if you're going real fast your fin works better. This is such a huge subject! I'm really excited to try out Slater's hollow (they float!) Endorfins.
@TheSurfboardGuide
@TheSurfboardGuide 5 ай бұрын
Not sure that's 100% correct - you can ride a smaller fin in larger waves if you're riding a bigger board, because you're using a board with a longer rail line and that provides hold and grip, so you aren't solely relying on the fin. I hope that makes sense!

Great Video - Thanks Kale! Starting with which Board Size does it make sense to start upgrading fins? I'm riding a 6,6 / 39 Liters and did some fin testing. To be honest: everything I put on, incl. speed generating fins, didn't feel as good as my "good old plastic fins" :D:D Was surprised myself. But I was thinking, it might be my stance - since I'm mostly very central on my board - midlength style. Meaning, I don't have my backfoot right over the fins very often. Might this be a reason for the experience? Or in other words - do you think, you can only start properly feeling the influence of your fins on your surfing when you are "stepping" on them properly / applying pressure? Which is probably mostly the case with shorter boards?

Was that your camera man? Looks like a real nice guy. I think he could benefit from changing his weighting on the board more, to the front to gain more speed, and lifting the nose to get light enough to get up the wave, to enable turns up into the wave. I may not know what I'm talking about, it's just from my personal experience and could be completely wrong.

Definitely a game changer for shit waves! For small waves or mush like the camera guy had, I go to the pivot blacksticks (yellows). Totally notice more speed and easier turning without sinking the tail. Bigger waves/ faster and I’ll go F8 blacksticks or G10 fiberglass.

After all this talk about flex, makes me wonder if fins lose that springiness over their life, kind of like a 4X4 glassed board. Theres no stringer in the fins, but I'm sure the same theory applies to some extent?

Filipe rides a large and he is sub 70kg. I'm 6'1 and 72kg and have recently moved to a large fin based on the above info, It feels very draggy and difficult to turn the board.
