Here’s my take for a sixty year old who never got tubed much. The waves that barrel good usually require a strong paddle. If your tired or out of shape not having speed to get in doesn’t give you time to set up. Experience is needed to tell which waves will barrel unless it’s just one of those good days. I grew up surfing Oceanside and Huntington Beach . A lot of almost hollow waves mixed with good waves. My friend who gets barreled all the time and now lives in kuaii said it best . You have to start searching them out and get to a point where that’s all you’re looking for as you paddle in. Then if you notice the wave isn’t going to barrel you shift to turns . Second was to learn how to fall or push out of the wave without getting hit by your board. Funny , the best place to fall is where you’re more nervous to be , and a confident stance makes you safer. You have to believe you belong in there

Real y, good advice, especially the last bit, Its so true that when you mantain yourself on the board and try to resist you get hit by the board much less often than when you fall inmedietly

what helped me out as a grom was surfing hollow close outs on an old board i didn't care about, kinda forced me to knife in, and took away some of the fear of being in too deep, the exits just came naturally after that with better wave conditions

My advice is to pull into as many big closeouts as you can. Especially backside. you’ll get an immediate taste and even a few pumps inside. Eventually with better conditions and little luck you’ll come out.

Yeah I used to pull into big close outs and dive into the foam ball until one day the board shot back and almost cut my ear completely off Also diving into the wall on a close out can also mean getting sucked over the falls 😂 Ole man from Hawaii🤙🏾

we had a really nice shoulder/head height day with an easy left barrel. i saw a guy keep catching them and i got the courage to step up. you could feel it as soon as you were on the wave, the opportunity for barrel, a very slow peeler day with enough ease to climb up to the lip without it going fast enough to be unpredictable. i just grabbed the rail, stepped on the tail more and went to the lip and got low. i wound up eating it. it's a bit more force when the lip hits you or you feel that force working on you. took another on a beach break on a wave that was a bit bigger and faster beach break wave. same experience except fast and being on the steep part hoping to catch a barrel before bailing. i'll get there!

Cool lessons 😊 I started out too many years ago and have seen so many technique changes😂 I learned to tube time on the Big island of Hawaii..,my lesson was pull in from the top not the bottom , enter Behind the peak not AT the peak when possible, match the speed of the wave and always relax, get above the foam ball if can and keep the tip pointed to the exit😂.. a long time ago on Oahu Dane Keakaha used a technique called a backside layback where you stall in the tube by dragging you back hand in the face… be careful if going too fast that technique can dislocate you shoulder lol… grabbing rail is easier.. great video brah 🤙🏾

I’m literally at the same spot of learning as this guy, we even have been surfing pretty much for the same period of time (5 years). What helps me quite a bit is to practice on some point breaks during small swells, where you aren’t scared of getting smashed by the big lip. As my mate, who’s been surfing for 20+ years, says “just don’t pussy out it’s all about the fear” 😅

My next long weekend in going to the beach to take surf lessons. Cant wait I grew up in a beach town in Florida where all my friends surf but i was the poor brown indian kid who was shy… now im 40 and saw The Olympics and want to learn! I remember everything about surfing back in the 90s my friends rocking roxy, quiksilver. Kelly slader i wanted all of that 😢 i dont live in that beach town anymore or in the US , so i searched surfing lessons here and found a few good ones with okay reviews….

@9:24 - that was my first barrel - complete chance and accident actually. it was hard offshores and I was bottom turning getting ready to hit the lip. Towards the end of my bottom turn, I saw the lip pitching. I was just trying to straighten back out (turn to the beach ) to get away from the lip. Next thing you know I was cruisin' through the green room and came out.

Learn to bodysurfing and start getting close out barrels now… don’t think that sounds cool enough? Then you’re probably riding surfboards (and waves) for the wrong reason (ego). Don’t think that sounds challenging enough? Making a legitimate in and out barrel while bodysurfing is next level wave riding ability.
