Love how depending on where you are in the US you can have such differences experience trying to breed certain fish.

I have water with no gh or kh and my platy fish had babies but many of the babies had bent spines. I then started adding gh booster and baking soda to my change water and their babies no longer had bent spines. The added gh also helped the plants very much!

It can be a sign of too close inbreeding as well. Might try bringing in new bloodlines to correct that.

Pearlweed is fantastic for babie tanks. I've got a 4 inch carpet on the bottom with about 4 inches floating at the surface. Dwarf water lettuce floating ontop also helps if you dont want pearlweed floating at the surface. Bendy babies is what i call the deformed ones. They usually survive very well. The sinkers(swim bladder issues) end up small probably because their always struggling to swim. Those ones i always seperate out

Im so glad my guppies love my well water. I only ever had to worry about nitrates and thats a simple plant and water change ratio.

I take egg shells and crush them up into a powder and sprinkle it in the fish/shrimp tanks. The rabbit snails, guppies and shrimp do really well. Havent had an issue with anyone. Now if i can figure out how to get the guppies to eat the shrimp... Every month i end up doing a massive shrimp gathering. I dont mind its just annoying having to fish out 200 shrimp everytime haha

I have also used this method and have maybe 1 bent spine per 1k of fry. I have a hard time thinking it is due to a chemical imbalance when it is such a rare event.

Have you considered that the guppies can and will eat their own babies? Often as soon as they're born! I'm having that problem in one tank because the moss plant I have isn't that grown yet while in my other tank which is 20 gallons has a huge moss plant and I keep anywhere from 100-300 Black Flame Endlers in there with no issues. I sell off the males mostly every 2 to 4 weeks. In that tank, the babies hide in the heavy plants and don't get eaten up.

@douggiles7647
@douggiles7647 11 ай бұрын
I find it crazy that we have the exact opposite problem, my guppies won't stop producing huge amounts of babies. I've already got around 100 fry from the 2 females I got at Christmas, and they're not even from the males I was trying to breed them with so I don't know what to do with them all when they start crowding my tanks. Although I would love to have water like yours because mine has over 250 TDS straight from the tap, good for guppies and the like but not much else without some tweaking. Another thing to keep in mind if trying to breed guppies is that they can hold male DNA for up to a year roughly, from what I've researched, so any babies in that time might not be from the male/s you're trying to breed them with.

Add a bunch of anubias nana petite on lava rocks to the bottom and middle of that guppy tank and it will look so much better. I love anubias nana petite as a low plant in my low tech tanks.

I bought two tall 10 gallon tanks a few month back after watching your videos on guppies. Bought 2 males and 6 females and split them between the tanks. I now have about 30 in each tank and enough duckweed to last until the end of days. I never even bought any duck weed. I can not for the life of me get rid of it. I take a bowl full out to my gold fish pond every day. That stuff is insane.

Duckweek be like that... try adding some surface flow to piss off the duckweed and get to nettin!
@elektrofry
@elektrofry Жыл бұрын
You can also spray a mist of water over the duckweed. That helps slow it down. Just using a straight walled beaker and slowly lowering it into the tank until it just starts to let water in it'll suck all the duckweed off the top and into the beaker. pour the beaker into a fish net over the tank when its full. repeat until its all gone. If you have guppies, they like to interfere with this process and get sucked into the beaker as well. Get the glass beakers and you can look in before pouring through the net so you don't lose any.

I'm what everyone warned against. Kiddo wanted a couple fancy & cobra and I had duckweed that snuck in a bag with anubias and java fern. A year later they're in a dedicated 10 gal and there's so many. I don't have any bendy (only seen 1 ever & it was a zebra danio that my pair dropped) what I get is what I call blanks. Mostly gray and mostly short tailed.
