Thank you John for saying "what I do will most likely not work for you" and that what works is personal. I used to go to the gym, using machines on and off for several years and nothing ever happened. Now since Covid started I work out at home, mostly using my own body weight and a few tools, and have managed to become quite fit. Several of my acquaintances however don't see my home workout routine as "real" training and make smug comments about what they do, implying that I should exercise that way as well. So happy to hear that I am right for sticking with what works for me.

In defence of BCAAs, when I had my accident & wound up bedbound for the first few months (Hell, I was paraplegic for the first 3), taking them - at the suggestion of a gymbro friend - from day 1 _did_ slow my muscle atrophy. ....Well, okay, my physiotherapist later acknowled they "probably" did, when assessing my condition, anyway. 🤔
@TovaHolmberger3 жыл бұрын
Women have shower muscle atrophy than men anyway thanks to estrogen so it might be a correlation. I mostly use BCAA'S to keep my energy levels up at the gym, but I've seen a lot of articles claiming consuming BCAA'S when you're not working out can cause fat gain.
@mysterylovescompany26573 жыл бұрын
@@TovaHolmberger interesting! I don't pretend to be an authority on supplements (I don't normally take them, except some vitamins), I just think it was interesting that my exercise physiologist, when I finally was enough months in to see one, was like, "Okay, what _else_ have you been doing, because [the isometrics I'd been doing] aren't enough to have maintained this much tone," & I slightly sheepishly told her about the supplement, she sort of raised her eyebrows, then I asked, "Do you think it's that, then?" & she said, "I can't say for sure, but...yeah, seems likely." Maybe I just got really, really lucky. I've never been someone who gains weight without living truly egregiously for weeks on end, if that makes any difference? I think the last time I put fat on was after living on cupcakes + baked goods + doughnuts + cheesecake (we're talking like 3 full-sized cupcakes or equivalent sugar a day, minimum) for essentially 6 weeks, after accidentally _massively_ overcatering a 40-person dessert-party for my birthday a couple of years ago. And it was only like 5kg, which I dropped within a month of just starting to eat normally again. I'm 37, so my metabolism should be kaput by now, but maybe I'm just really, really, really lucky there, as well. 😄

Most supplements are just gonna help you keep energy levels up, and get enough nutrients. You don't have to take them at all, and making your own electrolyte/glucose mix is extremely easy. A cup of coffee is a great PWO as well.

Ive heard coffee as a good preworkout before, I def need to try that!
@TovaHolmberger3 жыл бұрын
@@reeses4madi the main ingredient in pre-workout is usually caffeine so it only makes sense. Your body is always better at processing substances that are part of the natural source, so coffee (and tea, but the caffeine from tea is a much softer "caffeine kick") will give you the same effect for less kcal. You can also add things like sugar (honey is a good option for some other health benefits) which is also an ingredient in PWO, and BCAA'S exist in all foods rich in protein, so you could always make a coffee/vanilla milkshake with egg white in it (make sure the coffee is cold) as a PWO/snack. :)

I think also that if just feels like a shortcut to results, rather than spending months and months doing research to figure out what works best for your body. It's the same with crash diets. Working with a dietitian and pro-trainer can do that as well but they will do it the right way, as in at slower and appropriate pace. Don't give these people your money! Find yourself a local nutritionist and gym and get to work yourself.
