I didnt comment this on the actual thread (because i forgot) but Eldlich the Golden Lord is called Eldlich, o Senhor Dourado in portuguese, which IS the correct translation, but Dourado is a fairly common last name in Brazil, and "senhor" also means "sir" or "mister" so the name feels a lot less grandiose in portuguese, since it accidentally becomes something mundane like "Eldlich, Mr. Johnson"

So this is from Magic: the Gathering, not yugioh, but one of my favourite mistranslations is the card Descend Upon the Sinful, which when translated into french mistakenly used the word "'pêcheurs" for sinful instead of "pécheurs". This just screams for a UN-Set card. (For those unaware: The UN-Sets are joke cards with sometimes experimental often times absurd effects, like Chaos Confetti which requires you to tear the card into pieces.) Some favourites of mine are: 1) Our Market Research Shows That Players Like Really Long Card Names So We Made this Card to Have the Absolute Longest Card Name Ever Elemental That is the name of the card. It loops all around the entire border. 2) Animate Library This card lets you play your deck ... as a monster. The Attack (Power) and health become the amount of cards in your deck. 3) THE ENTIRE AUGMENT MECHANIC These are a set of cards, which are host and augment monsters, created in such a way that if you overlap the cards, they form a compound monster, combining the trigger, effect, creature type and even the artwork. And you can mix and match various monsters. Such as: [Zombified] + (eager) [Beaver] = Zombified Beaver [Multi-Headed] + (common) [Iguana] = Multi-Headed Iguana And ofcourse the unstoppable: [Half Kitten Half-] (adorable) [Kitten] = Half Kitten Half-Kitten [Sidenote: YES. The creature type of this card is: "Cat Cat"]

man disappointed that no one brought out that bls in french got translated as "knight of the black candleholder" because SOMEHOW the translater thought that it was that kind of "luster" the card name was referring to another fun one is that Treeborn frog in french for a long time didn't had "frog" in it's name (was called rainette, which is a great pun tbh) which meant that on top of having "excluding frog the jam" every frog card ALSO had "but including treeborn frog" adding like an entire line to almost every frog's effect

A German translation that actually rules is for Madolche Hootcake, Magidolce Pfannkuhuchen They just stuck the word "Uhu" which is both a specific species of owl, and the sound an owl makes, in the middle of the word "Pfannkuchen" meaning pancakes. It's just the most precious thing, and the word flows much nicer than other similar kind of portmanteaus.

In spanish the Fabled archetype is called "Fabuloso" which is technically not incorrect, but that word is always used to say "Fabulous", so you have cards called like "The Fabulous Cerburrel". But thats just the 3 words "pensioner", "growth" and "cookie" back to back. Its so weird to say. I guess they couldn't be bothered to find anything else pronounceable? "Testudo erat Numen" and "Numen erat Testudo" have the same name in English, French, Italian and Spanish. German decided to translate the Latin into "Die Schildkröte war göttlich"/"Göttlich war die Schildkröte" ("The turtle was divine"/"Divine was the turtle") Everyone else has to learn Latin to understand the lore of this turtle, but the german translation team found it very important to give it to us straight that this turtle used to be divine. also, "Reverse Buster", random packfiller that busts reverse (=face-down) monsters, was translated into german with "buster" not as in "destroyer" but as in "what an old person calls a young troublemaker" to "Umkehrbursche" ("reverse lad") Through a couple layers of abstraction he's basically gone from "face-down destroyer" to "buddy who turns things around"

I have to spit out a bunch of Italian translation issues here right now. Excluding stuff already mentioned by other commenters: -The original translation of V-Jet Tiger's flavor text that interpreted the reference to dogfighting as in actual dogs fighting -Naturia Eggplant that interpreted the "Eggplant" part as an egg that is also a plant -Dragonmaid Sheou keeping the English name while all the other ones had their anagram names properly redone (I think it's because the word they chose to translate House Dragonmaid could potentially include the N-word when you shuffle the letters around) -In fact, Dragonmaids were all mistranslated as Dragondamsels ("Dragonzella") -Miracle Kids being translated as "Miraculous boy" despite not only the English name was plural but Hero Kid was made into a girl -And also all those card names that in Italy somehow dodged censorship, such as Des Kangaroo and Barrel Dragon being reverted to their original Japanese names of Death Kangaroo and Revolver Dragon or TY-PHON being called a "Super Starmurderer" -Also, remember Ill Blud? Well, for some reason they decided to call him Galeogrugno, which basically means "Pug-faced convict".

The cool thing with words in german is, you can string alot of independent words together and they still build a "legit" word. Like: "Schiffsfahrtskapitänsmütze" which directly tranlates to:" Ship, drive, captain, hat" but it really means: " Captains hat " XD

In Brazil we have a meme with Heatleo or as it is called in the Brazilian translation,Salmangrande Leardor. A guy was making a 3x structure video when the structure came out and he accidentaly said he's running 3 Leardar and 3 Leardor and he showed 6 copies of Heatleo(the structure had multiple copies of it). Sometimes I see people refering to Heatleo as "Leardar e Leardor" as a reference to this

I often talk about "Whitebeard, the Plunder Patroll Helm" and how its french translator misunderstood the "Helm" part as coming from "helmet" instead of "helmsman". Leading to the dude being Casque de la Patroll du Pillage instead of Timonier de la Patroll du Pillage. There are countless examples like this one.

As a European i frequently buy German cards since they are just cheaper on average. I can read german so I don't tend to notice, but every now and then I get gems like "Rangsteigerungszauber Seelenrasurkraft". In the german dub of the anime, they refer to the BEWD as, essentially, "The White Dragon With the Stone-cold Stare". Which is very cool, but did not make it to the actual card game... which is probably for the best, since that would be one hell of a Frog-the-Jam situation with all the support that Blue-Eyes has gotten over the years. 😅

While we can (and should) laught at bad translations, we need to keep in mind that in many cases, especially before the brand was established, translators would only be given the text itself with little to no context, and strict daily quotas to meet. This could explain mistranslations such as "light" becoming "not heavy", and "donkey" being misread as "monkey". Italy seems especially prone to this, as the demand for translation is very high and English literacy is relatively low.

I have an unfamiliar one in Korean. You know the DM era that the vanillas were localized as whatever the fk TLs came up with? Like, 'バーサーカー(Berserker)' goes 'Mystic Clown' in TCG? Well the Korean TLs, don't ask me the reason, went '마력의 광대(Clown of Mana)' for that one. That's as far as OK. But when the GX era hit and バーサーカークラッシュ(Berserker Crush) released for Winged Kuriboh, the korean TLs for whatever reason got afraid 'バーサーカー' would be the name for the next archetype. So, they brought DM era localization '마력의 광대' for that keyword and now, 'Berserker Crush' in Korea is, still to this day, '마력의 광대 크러시(Clown of Mana Crush)'. HONK

Cretin really doesn't translate to idiot, However because it's originally an insult on someone's intelligence, It is sometimes translated that way, despite not matching the vibe at all. Cretin in modern English is more associated with physical and social aspects of the condition it is named after, However that doesn't translate well into other languages where these associations are often different.
