Missed the thread, but: Fun fact - until the release of the Illusions in DUNE, there was at least one offbrand dragon in EVERY type. Shaddoll Dragon is a Spellcaster. Immortal Dragon is a Zombie. Ken the Warrior Dragon is a Warrior. Double Dragon Lords is a Beast-Warrior. Black Dragon Ninja is a Beast. Rindbrumm the Striking Dragon is a Winged Beast. Grapha, Dragon Lord of Dark World is a Fiend. Cloudian Storm Dragon is a Fairy. Dragonbite is an Insect. Bayerock Dragon is a Dinosaur. Evil Dragon Ananta is a Reptile. The thing about a lot of common themes like "Dragons" or even just "humanoids" that are a "weird" type is that it's thematically more relevant to have them be their other type compared to just being like, "He's a person, he can't be a Rock-type." I mean the game would be really ridiculously limited if every human had to be a Warrior or Spellcaster. Or with this logic, if every single monster that looks like a dragon has to be Dragon-type. Like, "Oh, sorry, Cloudian Storm Dragon, I know that you're part of a Fairy archetype and you aren't an actual dragon but because you look like a dragon I guess you need to be Dragon-type."

To this day it bugs the shit out of me that Yu-Gi-Oh! has a subtype all about monsters equipping to monsters, but they then made so many monsters that have effects that equip themselves to other monsters that are NOT that type.

The funny thing is that hybrid monsters already exist.... in dark duel stories lol. There's a reason "cornfield coatl" is named that. "Cornfield" is the top half of the monster, "coatl" is the bottom half, but instead of getting "cornfield coatl" you could, for example, take the "light law" half of "light law medium" and stitch it onto the "coatl" half of cornfield coatl to make "light law coatl", or do the opposite and get "cornfield medium".

The idea of using pendulum's monster/ spell hybrid property for the megalith monsters being the ritual spells sounded cool, but then Fire King Island Turtle swept in as the best concept I've heard in months. There's another comment in this comment section suggesting the Earthbound Immortals as field spells that become monsters which I also love, it fits as a rework to their "live or die by the field spell" mechanic and depending on how it'd be done it reminds me of MTG's keyrunes, manarock artifacts that have an activated effect to turn into a creature for the turn. Also the person pointing out that Amrophage should've revolved around this is absolutely right, their core trait in lore is the amorphage is an infectious disease that mutates creatures into dragons, and we already have DNA Surgery & DNA Transplant that change types/ attributes which establishes a theme of genetics relating to a monster's type/ attribute. Basically Amorphage should've been a take on a Dragon Capture Jar strategy where you turn things into dragons then seize control of them/ shut them down with anti dragon effects (kinda like Zombie World + Balerdroch/ Vampires).

Funny thing about "The Wicked" cards; they actually were supposed to be divine beasts, but they were printed before the egyptian gods were legal, so they were changed to fiends. They would have basically been Dark Divine Beasts to the OG's light themed Divine Beasts

New type fusions in Rush Duel is cool and all BUT: 1. This means the fusions CAN'T benefit from supports of their pre-fused archetypes, unless that support card stated otherwise. (Magical Knights are warrior + spellcaster, but you can't use either warrior support or spellcaster support with it.) 2. They stopped adding fusion types after Sevens finished airing lmao. I think it is a cool idea, but with the first point I stated above, all it does is making the cards worse, so they kinda ditched that early on.

Link/Pendulums that you can scale by summoning them directly into the pendulum zone because a link arrow points to it. Their arrows point left and right and their pendulum effects let you summon other link monsters into the backrow Crystal Beasts that are pendulums and let you pend out your backrow CBs because it's a Yugioh Crime that the monsters that become continuous spells aren't the type of card that can be either monster or continuous spell (I pitch these under every tangentially related yugioh video but they've never been more appropriate lol)

The tri-brigade one (beast, beast-warrior and winged-beast), the cyberpunk one (machine, cyberse, psychic), the water ones (sea serpent, fish and aqua), the "nature" one (plant, insect, reptile), and I believe nothing else RN. Closest things ideologically are the evol-types (reptile, dinosaur and dragon), and thought I believe I'm making this up I think there's a few cards that support warriors, spellcasters and a third thing at the same time? But I'd have to go digging for that.

If anything it now seems detrimental because all your Dragon support does not work with your High Dragon Type Boss Monster. I was going to say, maybe controversially, that Magic is the more "designed" game of the two of these considering it tries to make all of its rules consistent and purposeful so that it can do cool stuff like multi types, but YuGiOh does so much cool shit with what it does have. Honestly would not be the hardest thing to impliment if you were clever. probably give them a fun name like "World Monster" and summoning condition where you can change them from a field spell to a monster. like lets say you have a monster that is a Sleeping Dragon that has an entire city built upon it (lets call it Slumbering Fortress Dragon Collosa). when you want to summon it, you need to fulfil a condition like sending 3 cards from the field to the graveyard to awaken the Gaia monster, landing a massive summon that removes the monster from the field and instead summons it to a monster zone you control. I would have the gaia monster be pretty strong and resilient to removal, but probably have some form of downside to prevent it being too strong. like maybe a World monster could nuke your board when its first summoned, and cannot attack on the turn its summoned. however... it can block certain effects that might target your back row or other monsters before it is destroyed, or it can redirect attacks aimed at it toward the rest of your board. who knows.

We kinda got one of them, Rock of the Vanquisher is technically both a monster and a Field spell for the archetype allowing for unique effects and being un-targetable by battle if Vanquish souls are on the field. there is also Simorgh bird of perfection which is counted as both Wind and Dark Attribute, unsure if this is a feature on all the Simorghs however.

The field spell/monster hybrid could actually be a great retrain for the Castle of Dark illusions! Like...why was that card not a FS in the first place!? Imo it should actually come with a whole retrain for PaniK's monsters as well "King of Yamimakai" as the boss monster (this card should have gotten some support by now outside of that one random D/D/D spell card where he is mentioned). You could even use that archetype to go deeper into the hybrid-types. Making the retrains treated as both Illusion and Fiend type monsters or change type on wether Castle is used as a fieldspell or a monster making them "real fiends" when the card itself is a monster or Illusions when it's used as a field spell But tbh, i just want a PaniK retrain/archetype cause his duel was iconic for the early days of the YGO anime

Magic once literally did a mass type errata where they gave every creature a race and most a class. It also included some rules about creatures with a type in their name automatically gaining that type unless there was an obvious reason not to. Eg. Dragon tamer is not a dragon. This resulted in some fun things like the card skeleton archer finally becoming a skeleton archer

A year ago I made custom cards and created extra deck monsters that were called Vortex Monsters. They had two attributes and two types, and could be made with any two monsters that have those features (So a Fire Plant + Earth Insect, or an Earth Plant + Fire Insect could make a Vortex Fire/Earth Insect/Plant monster).

And not just this, I want literally every possible Extra Deck hybrid combination (both the Pendulum and non-Pendulum variants), *including Links!!* 3:55~4:00 I'm pretty sure a Trap counterpart to Pendulum would be more than just a color swapped border. It should at least say "Pendulum Trap" on the Type list instead of just "Pendulum". 'Cause here's the thing: colorblindness exists. There can, and probably will, be people who would not be able to tell the difference unless it was stated in text purely because they can't see the colors.

I find dual archetype cards to be the best way for YGO to do this while also adding to the flavor of the archetype. Like Girsu the Orcust Mekk Knight being of both archetypes and having effects that mirror them. Or the Kashtira corrupted Tearlaments Kashtira and Scareclaw Kashtira. Is kinda of a shame that some of the earlier ones (gishki chain or daigusto emerald) that are technically part of two factions in lore didnt get the hybrid treatment

The field zone monster is a great idea. Better than my pet innovation, aoe spells and traps with arrows on the card. A yugioh Commander of sorts would probably have unique drawbacks for each card based on its power. Destroy an island turtle, everyone sinks, for example. Some might lose you a chunk of lifepoints or chunks of your field or deck, others may be an automatic loss under certain conditions.

when compared to pokemon types or mtg colors, hybrid cards would be related to a deck building restriction rather than just a stat line on cards. when I think of hybrid cards in yugioh I think of cards that are explicitly part of several archetypes at once like the dogmatika albaz cards or the raid raptor phantom knight cards. So they have done some of this, but it's more complicated because while mtg has 5 colors yugiohs color pie includes things like "marincess" and "fluffel"

So Wyrm, Sea Serpent, and Dinosaurs are dragons because their Japanese names contain the kanji 竜 (ryū) the Japanese word for dragon. Wyrm is Genryū (Phantom Dragon) Sea Serpent is Kairyū (Sea Dragon) Dinosaur is Kyōryū, (terror dragon) Ironic Dragon does not use this kanji as it's the word "Doragon," which is the Japanese way of pronouncing the English word dragon. Which is why some cards, like some cards like Agave Dragon or Xeno Meteorus, mention them all.

They should include a subtype for each card. Not for searching in databases but it take words off cards. Example: Dogmatika Ecclesia, the Virtuous Could just be, Ecclesia, the Virtuous. Spellcaster/Effect/Dogmatika You can only use the effect of “Ecclesia, the Virtuous” once per turn. This cuts down in the name being longer when being mentioned in its own effect. Also the OCG has Special Summon classification instead of “this monster cannot be normal summoned/set.”

I have often thought it is weird that monsters have been able to have multiple attributes (though only through effects) ever since Elemental Mistress Doriado was printed in 2005, but there has never been a way for a monster to have multiple types. Except in the anime, as the commenter in the video who brought up TGs mentioned. But none of those effects made it into paper.

I think there’s some room for experimentation with combining normal mosters with other card types. Making Normal Pendulum Monsters made normal monsters actually viable in decks like Metalphoes, so making normal monsters that are also regular spells and traps could make a kinda useless category of card somewhat playable again. It could also go a ways in standardizing things like trap monsters and union monsters in the future! Maybe. Idk I’m just havin fun here.
