Back in the day. My gaming group would rent a cabin in the woods in New Hampshire for a October weekend and we played Call of Cthulhu on Friday, and 2 horror themed D&D games the other 2 days. Did that for 10 years straight back in the 90's and early 2000s. What a time.

My favorite horror TTRPG in this vein is Dread, where instead of dice and stats you play with a jenga tower. Do something daring? Pull a block. Do something extra difficult? Pull two blocks. Tower falls: You die! (or something negative happens that really hampers you) Really made for horror one-shots!

Reminds me of how we used to massage the AD&D 1e rules to make them suitable for other genres...like the ruleset we made for playing pre WWII adventure pulp scenarios (a-la Indiana Jones, Alan Quartermaine, The Mummy, Detective Noir, etc.). So much fun.

Holy crap, I forgot about the Revenge of the Creature event, I remember my brothers and I riding our bikes to the 7-11 for glasses and they made a big deal about it being Clint Eastwood's first movie even though he was in it for two minutes and wasn't even credited. So much excitement for what was a thirty year old film at the time.

Another game that has a similar vibe is the "They Came From..." line of games that leans into B movie tropes in a very fun way. The first game: "They Came From Beneath the Sea" is 50's atomic monster/creature feature horror. The second game: "They Came From Beyond the Grave" is Hammer Horror. The third game: "They Came From Camp Murder Lake" is 70's/80's Slasher horror

My favorite modern horror game of this genera is "Dread". That game is a horror game that REALLY REALLY works. In most horror RPG's the player's characters are the ones feeling the fear, while the players are more or less removed from it, controlling their actions. "Dread" is the ONE horror RPG that I've ever played that makes the players feel the very same tension that their character feels. Using the Jenga tower is a damn work of genius. Every time the player has to pull a block out of that tower, knowing full well that if that tower falls, something absolutely horrible is going to happen to their character, including most likely, death, just fills the players with tension in every scene, and every action. Every time they take an action, that tower gets more and more wobbly... The players know that the thing is going to fall and ONE of them is going to fall victim to it. I've had games of "Dread" where you could cut that tension with a knife. The new game, "Mothership" also deserves mention, though I really don't find it quite as intense an experience as "Dread" is. "Dread" was a HUGE success on our game table.

Have you checked out the Monster Hunter International RPGs? There's two different versions. One for the HERO system and one for SWADE. Both are official products. The premise of the MHI novels and thus the RPGs is that monsters, vampires, werewolves, zombies, et cetera, are real. There's a bounty system on them, the Perpetual Unearthly Forces Fund or PUFF. MHI hunts monsters and collects the bounties. I know of one campaign run by one of the moderators for the MHI Facebook group that had his players paranoid about boxes from a certain online retailer because he had mimics that were those boxes. The basics of that have been turned into a one sheet for the SWADE version over at Gallant Knight Games.

I watched it with a friend who was huge into horror films one night that I stayed over with him, and while the movie kind of sucked, the novelty of it and the way that we scared each other (plus the fact that one or the other of us fell asleep at different times during the film) was the major draw of the whole thing.
