This song was written by Randy Newman of “I Love LA” fame. It was actually first recorded by the Animals in the 60s and Newman latter however Three Dog Night made it into a hit. I believe all their hit songs were covers.

This song perfectly described part of my life around 1969 to 1972. Randy Newman (writer of songs like, You've got a Friend in Me, from Toy story) was responsible for this song as well and many many more. It has always been a little time capsule of my life at that time for me.

This is one of my favorites from Three Dog Night. It was written by Randy Newman who did I Love LA, Short People and the theme song for the TV show Monk along with so many others. This is a great story about a straight laced person going to his first party party back in 1970, and the references are pretty good. There is a pot reference "That cigarette you're smoking nearly scared me half to death" I always took as his first time seeing a joint. A couple of other good songs are One Is The Loneliest Number and Old Fashioned Love Song.

@davidburton913619 сағат бұрын
My first concert was Three Dog Night the year this came out, 1970! Part of what was so impressive at the time was that many, many bands used studio musicians in their recordings, famously the so-called "Wrecking Crew" in LA where I think TDN was based. TDN had such good musicians that they didn't need "hired guns". Though the band's gimmick was that it had 3 lead singers, they were very much the same 7-person band for most of the time when they were cranking out hits like clockwork. All they did were covers, but they helped make a lot of songwriters from that era rich and famous along with the band!

Three Dog Night had a gift of covering songs that were little known (either the song or songwriter) to the public. This song is a cover of a Randy Newman song which (the original) features an incredible bit of slide guitar work by Ry Cooder ... perhaps the greatest guitarist of that time.

I'm 56 now for a little perspective. When i was 13 me and my buddy who was spending the night at my house got out in the neighborhood and got our hands on a bottle of vodka, it would be fair to say we were drunk. Walking back to my house I tell him when we get home Dad will be watching tv, he's not gonna concern hisself with us, all we gotta do is step through the door turn left and 7 steps and we're homefree in my room. So we walk through the door me leading the way, according to plan I turn left 7 steps open my door simple as pie home free. Just as I'm stepping across the threshold to safety I hear George (my buddy, still to this day) say, "hey Everette, whatcha watching" i guess dad just looked at him like some interesting new bug and he holleredout, "Barry, get in here" just as I stepped into the living room George started puking on his shoes. Dad wasn't very proud of us to say the least but here i am alive to tell the story. About 3 or 4 years later mom and dad were heading out of town on vacation supposed to be gone for like 10 days. Dad hollered into my room and said "boys, we're leaving don't burn the house down" and so about an hour later me and George sit down at the kichen table and light up a number. We'd smoked about 1/2 of it and the door opens up and dad says, "hey boy's I forgot my te.....Jesus Christ, I'm not even out of town yet and you're smoking Marijuana in my house"... he said something i didn't quite catch went to the garage and got his tennis racket, he forgot his tennis racket... when they came home I kept waiting for it but he never mentioned it again, until one Christmas at his house many years later he just out of the blue told my by then 23ish year old son both of those stories😢

Merry Christmas Phil and Sam This is my favorite song from 3DN. ✌✌
@lisas645019 сағат бұрын
😊❤ Hi Phil and Sam! 😅 Aaah such a great oldie!! LOL 😂 I loved your reactions! 😃😅 I guess you had to be there to catch all the references! 😂 The "sugar in your tea?" The tea was probably mushroom and the sugar, in cube form (like you would use in tea) were laced with LSD. Kind of like utube they had to be tricky with the lyrics to get radio air time!! LOL 😂 And they didn't leave out pot! "That funny cigarette your smokin' nearly scared me half to death!" LOL 😂 Most definitely a joint! The stale perfume was most likely a combo of pot smoke and perfume. All the big time smokers wore patchouli oil!! Supposedly so that they 'wouldn't wreak of pot smoke. But everyone knew that so you weren't really hiding anything!! LOL 😂 🤣 So, they have alcohol, shrooms, LSD and weed! Just a typical teenage basement or garage party!! No biggie!! LOL 😂🤣 Luv you guys! 😊❤❤

This was blasting out everywhere back in the day, and obviously fascinated us teenagers at school as we imagined being old enough to get some of that fun. Happy memories of too much alcohol as Phil said, not enough food beforehand either, and friends both male and female in a similar state, innocent enough stuff for most of us until we grew a bit older, but that's a different story for a different song or two

*Been there more times than I care to admit!!!!* One of the worst times I can remember I actually made it home.......sort of........ It was after a Christmas Party in New England at or around below zero as young Paul stumbles up the driveway, up the front steps, opens the storm door, fumbles with his keys and scratches around trying to get the key in the lock, opens the inner door and proceeds to pass out half in the house and half outside of the house with the storm door in his hip. How didn't get frostbite on my lower extremities I have no clue, might have been the heat pouring out of the house. I wake up to my mother screaming at the top of her lungs..... WHY IS IT SO F-ING COLD IN HERE!!!!.....PAUL ALAN ROGERS WTF?!?!?!?!?! And the rest is history 😁 ✌Peace✌

It was written for Eric Burdon (Animals) who recorded a very poor version of it, without back-up singers. After speaking to stale perfume, the singer does in fact go onto that "cigarette you're smoking". So it was perfume (maybe some Hi-Karate cologne thrown in) and weed,

Just a couple of quick things. 3 dog night was one of the few groups from the late 60s early 70s that really didn't have any tremendous connection to drugs or any problems within the band do to drug use like so many of the other great groups of that era. The other thing I'd like to mention is that 3 dog night was one of those fun groups to see live in concert? You always have a great time. You always walked out of that place feeling better than when you walked into it. They never took themselves too serious and as followers of the group, we adopted that persona ourselves.

Easy To Be Hard and One are two of my favorites from Three Dog Night...great reactions! Been there as well, college party early 70's, 19/20 yrs old, mixing beer, whiskey, tequila...very bad scene and painful the next day. Woke up in a bathroom on the floor the next morning, quite humiliating. Couldn't find my car keys so that I could sneak away. Everyone else were still sleeping. Four women/girls were sharing this house, one was a classmate...so brutal.
