I remember an interview with one of the surviving Night Witches. She said that if you dug your finger into the plane, the fabric would tear. It was that flimsy. She was proud of the title Night Witch. She also spoke fondly of a girl who survived seven flights out. The ladies did indeed carry extra bombs and grenades to toss out. They were supposed to carry a parachute in case they crashed, but this was a time in which if you were shot down, if you happened to survive, you fight to the death. No choice. So, they just carried extra bombs and weapons instead. Their commander went to look for them, because she wanted to prove that they weren't traitors or defectors.

I've seen this video countless times, but it still sucker-punches me at the end every time. 😊

In your last Sabaton video, you said they probably had a small budget for the animation. If you want a HUGE budget video, check out Bismarck! You WON'T be disappointed 😉 ⚓️ 🌊 🤘

Tossing munitions (grenades) out of an airplane (specifically airplane) was done for the first time in 1911 in the Italian-Turkish war, followed by the Bulgarians in 1912 First Balkan War against Turkish positions. It was not uncommon even in the days of WW2. These girls truly fired their sidearms at attacking German fighters, as they had no mounted machine guns on the airplane.

For good visuals to go along with the story I can only say Bismarck. it has an amazing song and a movie quality -non- animated story to go along with it! It was their 20th anniversary gift to their fans and it's incredible. :D

Great reaction as usual! Did you notice at the very beginning, when the German guard was seeing the silhouettes flying by, they kept switching between the planes and witches on broomsticks? I don't know if they ever carried bombs in their laps, but it wouldn't surprise me. The planes couldn't carry more than 2-4 bombs at a time, and they each flew as many as 10 sorties per night as a result. And for a Sabaton video with imagery telling a great story, Bismarck is a must. And if I'd had a brain in my head this morning, I'd have included the link when I commented, instead of coming back 20 minutes later to add it in - kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYe6dpVjdtlrr8U

There were around 130 women in that 588 regiment. Pilots and navigators ~ 80 or so, if my memory serves me right. I saw the full list of their names recently, but cant find it now, unfortunately. So, yeah, 32 out of ~80 is...

Well, yeap, the Night Witches took little bombs into the cockpits. Moreover, they did not take parachutes with them to save the weight for a bombs. Also their Po-2 was a training aircraft with no night navigation systems. In the dark of the night their small and slowly planes with dark paintings and shut engines were invisible and unhearable. The german soldiers recognized the raid only when first bombs were droped. The Night Witches were first stealth bombers ever.

Check out Saboton UTube History channel! All of the Russian pilots make and female did not have or carry parachutes. If they got shot down and survived the crash they were to fight to the death not to be taken prisoner. If they manage to escape the Germans and get back to their bases. They were interrogated by their camanders ( again male and female pilots). Then executed. Because the Russian commanders could not be certain why they managed to survive certain death so they must have been turned into German spies. Russian commanders could not afford that chance. So every Russian flying mission was actually a suicide mission, you were consider fortunate and patriotic if you returned, refueled and rearmed to fight again. Rock On Stay Safe!🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
