In this video I revisit a song by Sabaton that I've already heard once before on Roadie Reactions, but so many of you requested that I check out this Animated Story Video that I feel I had to do it... And I'm glad I did! This video really brings out the best of the Night Witches story, and definitely brings out some emotion as well!

my grandfather was a russian pilot, and he respected those women so much he refused to fly in the victory parade out of respect for them, he even has a tattoo which translated says "fallen daughters of the motherland, i salute you"

And they played out d-day using warhammer rules. So they could see for themselves the carnage that was d-day.

I'm Russian and I'm not the type to get emotional but this ine hits me especially hard and I find myself teary-eyed and choked up everytime I watch this I'm super proud of our brave women when germans overan soviet union and slaughter millions of men they stood up and joined the men in this fight, there were 800 000 women who fought for the Soviet Union that ranged from infantry to tankers pilots snipers.. every combat role there is I firmly belive that there is no way we could've won this fight without these courageous women. And I'm glad and thankful to Sabaton for honoring they're memory and telling the world about them they deserve to live forever in our hearts.

One of the things I love about Sabaton is how they bring these stories out and give them their place in history they deserve. So many heroes are not recognized by their nations and here they not only get a voice but their stories are now known to the general public. I think it is one of the reasons they are so loved by the fans

In a history video about them, it seems that sometimes, bomb blocked and didn't fall, so they used the same way to detached them. When you thnik how much cold the wind were, the movement of the plane and the few visibility they should had, it's really impressive!

@@ApXucBuH I’ve been doing a lot of self-driven history reading, particularly WW1 and WW2 from European perspectives. Since the US joined so late in both conflicts, our education system misses much of the dramatic stories that come from other areas of the conflict. WW1 is particularly fascinating to me because of how dramatically the geopolitical map changed as a result. The histories of the peoples of Europe are amazing to read about and I’m very happy that I’ve taken it upon myself to learn more about other cultures.

The siege lasted 882 days . Read some books about it . Harrison Salisbury, Pulitzer prize winner was the first forgeign journalist who entered city after Soviet troops broke the siege . Book is called 900 DAYS. You should read that book if you are trying to undstand Russian soul. My phd is about that Siege .. he gave excellent account what really hapened in the city during that period,You should understand Russia and why nobody ever was able to conquer it .Edit = my keyboard suck need to replace it.Sorry for spelling

Could not find this in the comments. The Po-2 biplanes had a weak enough engines. Then these brave Night Swallows (they weren't witches in our predecessors' eyes) did not take the parachutes (in exchange for some more bombs), and the downing of a plane by the enemy's gunfire almost always led to the death of both ladies - lady-pilot and lady-navigator: they just had no chances for rescue. Number of cases were documented when they burned alive within their falling plane. Terrible death. And the eternal glory for all of them.

They probably knew that surviving the crash to return home would be worse than death. They'd face suspicion from the Soviet government that they'd been captured and converted into spies for the rest of their lives. Likely short lives considering what the Soviets did to suspected spies.

​@@brigidtheirish please, don't tell such BS to me, OK? Returned pilot of downed war-plane should be "cleared" by counter-intelligence services, but most of them passed these checks with ease. Also, should pilot be downed at enemy territory, his/her chance to avoid the capturing were minimal. Another note: many pilots were already checked by NKVD (in future - KGB, later FSB) before they were allowed to fly, so it was almost impossible to convert the pilot. As to burning "winged manned bomb", such cases were not very rare, especially during first 1-1.5 years of the War: pilots understood that their death will cause some more damage to enemies. Japanese kamikaze were just a "pale shadows". You may read about mr. Gastello, for example. Aerial ramming also was "usual habit": when the plane was heavily damaged and ammo depleted, the pilot could ram the enemy plane, also with minimal chance to survive. But such self-sacrifices made the Nazi movement much slower, than it was, for example, in France, where the crews of ammo-less tanks popped out with hands in the air, and the infantry preferred to be captured instead of engage the close combat.

​@@brigidtheirish No any hostility or offence. But I'm tired to hear about "nightmareous commissars torturing and suspecting everyone, who managed to return". There were 3 women-only air-regiments: day-time bombers, attacking fighters and night-time bombers. Two first were equipped with modern enough warplanes, while 588 (NtB) was equipped with obsolete training biplanes. Exclusively because of their low speed and ability to glide with their engines cut-off. Also, the engines produced much less noise, which is very important for night flights. Additional reason: the fabric-made wings could withstand the non-igniting projectiles and debris. Bullets and debris penetrated the wings, but this almost did not transmitted damage to the plane's hard structures. Well, doubtful reason. But... And these weak engines made the lady-pilots to not wear the parachutes. Mrs. Rashkevich strictly ordered her girls to do so, but they preferred to take several small bombs instead to cause as much damage as possible. Also note the gender of pilots. Male pilot, parachuted in enemy lines could be tortured, murdered or imprisoned. Ladies could be almost inevitable raped first, and raped in very violent manner. And they preferred the death over captivity.

I'm from Russia! My first great-grandfather defended Stalingrad and was killed there, my second great-grandfather was wounded during the liberation of Prague. When I was a little kid (35 years ago) I saw a lot of veterans with medals on WW2 Victory Day and they didn't want to talk about this war! My favorite types of songs are ones that tell stories; even more specifically true stories. So, when I discovered Sabaton so many years ago, I fell in deep, deep love with this band. they actually had no choice. All USSR stand to fight. USSR that time about 200 millions, United Europe (helpers of Hitler) about 400 milions. Plus Japan came joined in 1945 to try finish us up. There was no choice - to go war or to sit at home. Nazy come burn home if they stay. People choose to move forward out of homes meet Nazis. Others who stayed inside country (kids, sick, old) worked at factories to produce guns, bullets all that, and some food of cause. Everybody was hungry. Nobody to look farming and ect.

Imagine flying in pitch black with no illumination or instrumentation at tree top level using the stars & compass to navigate in a ww1 canvas & wood plane & no parachute either carrying 800 pounds of bombs spotting your target, cutting your engine and diving in & dropping your bombs, flying out & cutting your engine on flying away usually under anti aircraft flier . Return to base & refuel, reload and doing it again sometimes as many as 4 to 6 times a night. Our bomber crews were released after 25 missions, the night witches flew as many as 2000 missions. True heroes!!

Their aircraft were labeled "Coffee makers" by some German troops because of their peculiar engine sounds. The actual damage caused was limited due to a light bomb load and inaccuracy of nighttime bombing. These were very brave women, sent into battle with inferior equipment and many of them paid the final price. They deserve the highest respect.

I think the pride and emotion stirred by these videos for people serving other nations is admiration of the bravery and determination of humanity. Humanity is a concept that crosses the constructs of borders and countries and unites us as simply people. There are good and noble people everywhere, and these Sabaton songs remind us of that.

What you feel as we all do is the human being in the chapter of History that no dusty history book could ever portray. Human being caught in these epic event lost to history but not to Sabaton. Their songs strip the politics and national issues away and show the common things all humans are capable of, duty, honour, sacrifice and valour one never knew they had till they faced with the circumstances. As a vet who fought I can truly appreciate these women and the fact they disbanded them after they were done using them. It is an honour to watch this and appreciate these women for their incredible deeds and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their comrades. to think of the stories behind the songs is something that hits hard. most of the people in the songs were way younger than i am now (30). and to imagine what big luck we have to not have to do what they had to.. well thanks to all who served to make the world what it is now even if we have some real bad shit atm we still are lucky to live in this time of peace ( not everywhere of course but in the majority)

(Sorry for my bad grammer, English is not my first language) I've seen alot of comments about the 'Sabaton effect' , being a human and all that kinds of stuff. I think it is also you realiseing the stories about what happend during the war. The less known stories about heroes and their actions.. The more you learn about the history, the more you will understand and you move yourself in their shoes. This will move you easily cause most of us can't imagine how it would have felt, how it would have been and what we would have done. Never the less, great video like allways!! Keep it going Tank!!

I feel you dude, Sabaton always hits me emotionally. I study a lot of history and when I discovered Sabaton back in 2015, it got me to take back up singing again in full force. Its hard for me to sing through some songs, I'm not sure if its being older or having the knowledge of what some of these people actually went through but I just feel the emotion and energy when I sing these songs. Another reason why I think Sabatons music should be sung and shared since it remembers real heroes.

I never knew of the Night Witches until getting to visit the Monino Air Museum, outside Moscow, in 1993. They have a memorial display with 2 Polikarpov Po-2 in the 588th Livery....which is a witch riding a bomb. Pictures, some medals...and a flight uniform. These incredible ladies are unbelievable. Flying an open cockpit biplane...at night...in the middle of winter. And the reason they did not get to fly during the Celebrations was that the Po-2 was the same reason they were so hard to shoot down by the Germans.... too slow. If flying they would mess up the other units. And....I too tear up with Sabatons stuff. It shows just how awesome their stuff is...to reach down deep and take hold.

As a long-time Sabaton fan, I highly recommend Fields of Verdun FOLLOWED BY In Flander’s Fields. For heart-punching, gut-wrenching feels, these two will get you. I was working one night, just cleaning up after the day, and I checked KZbin, found The Great War album, and listened through. The whole album is good, lots of head-banging, but Verdun and Flander’s hit hardest. I literally stopped in my tracks when Flander’s started, and my eyes poured. It hit home, hard, as I am a history nerd and degreed student of history.

It is a great video for telling the story, even if not all that accurate in detail. They didn't stop the engine altogether, just throttled right back to flight idle, so the prop was "windmilling", as being hand propped (no electric start) they could not have restarted a stopped prop from low altitude and low airspeed - diving to restart a stopped prop is something I've trained for! Oh, and you ALWAYS start by hand-propping from behind the prop - otherwise it sucks you in when it starts. Getting knocked over by the propwash is vastly preferable to being homogenised with it. For all their apparent obsolesence, the Polikarpov U-2VS/LNB (NATO designation MULE) was actually a very capable aircraft, the vast majority of which were built for the miltary, although numerous other uses were found, and ski, float and wheeled variants were built. It was renamed to Po-2 in 1944 in line with Soviet practice of using the shortest distinguishing contraction (almost always two letters) of the designer or design bureau of origin. It was easy to repair, cheap to build, and remained in production until 1959 and was still a problem for UN forces in the Korean war. Wood and fabric was stealthy before stealth was officially recognised as desirable! The six 50Kg bombs and 7.62mm rear facing machine gun probably had a greater radar profile than the aircraft itself! There are 12 still flying (one a few miles from here), of the 33,000 U-2 and unknown number of Po-2 built and it is the most produced biplane ever, with the longest production run of any Soviet aircraft. Some later variants even entered airline service with LOT, Aeroflot and MIAT Mongolian Airlines! Short and rough field performance was very good (heck, I'd love to get my hands on one now!). Oh, and it is the only biplane with a certified jet kill - a Lockheed F-94 Starfire. They just slowed until the jet was too slow to manoever, just as they had with bf-109s and FW-190s, so were able to engage it on their own terms. Considering the number of sorties and hours flown (23,672 and 28,676, respectively), their total losses of 32 out of the 261 women who served in the 588th were incredibly light - that number is total, and even includes some to accident and disease - and for 3,000 tons of bombs and 26,000 incendiary shells dropped, that probably makes them more efficient than B-17s, Mosquitos or Lancasters. Their greatest use was in causing sleep deprivation though. It is hard to fight when your eyes won't focus and you keep hallucinating!

The hardest-hitting feels of any Sabaton song to me is by far To Hell and Back. Knowing the history of Audie Murphy before listening and knowing his struggles of PTSD after the war makes some of the lyrics just hit so hard. Maybe I'm a little bias being military myself, but the real-life Captain America deserves a reaction video! Often referred to as the most decorated soldier of WW2 even being honored heavily by our allies. A whole lot of patriotic pride felt in that song.

Being proud of the achievements of another country's soldiers.... yes. I am British and Sabaton made me proud of the German fighters in the First World War. I literally only exist because on my mum's side, my grandmother's father was the one male in his family who survived the First World War. His two brothers were killed. He was captured by the Germans and was a prisoner of war in Switzerland. On my father's side, my grandfather's father fought at Ypres, was wounded and gassed but lived to have my grandfather. It doesn't matter, not when Sabaton grabs you by the soul and really forces you to see. Not that I'd ever hate somebody for fighting, but to actively feel pride in them is a really intetesting feeling and one I am so thankful to feel.

hey Tank, going back through these reactions of yours of my fav band Sabaton, and you said something that struck home for me. I think it is the hormones and being a new dad that has got you more emotional. I have a 4 yo daughter and I want her to be brave and bold and a hero. Listening to Night Witches makes me hopeful my daughter can be as brave or as strong of will as these heroes of the 588th. There's a song of the new album, Lady of the Dark, which gives me the same feels as Night Witches. I'd love to see a reaction of that song since you've also got a daughter that I'm sure you want to own the world too.

Im 23 right now, 24 in september. The average age for soldiers in ww2 is 23. Scary shit Two of the most emotional songs for me are "Aces in Exile" about foreign pilots from german occupied nations fighting in the Battle of Britain in defense of the isle. The other is "Union (Slopes of St Benedict)" because its about all the allies coming together and dying by each other's side near the ending of the war. A couple honourable mentions are "Hearts of Iron" and "The Last Battle". Hearts is about a german commander disobeying orders to help civilians flee the Red Army, and Last Battle is about Germans fighting with Americans against the SS

Can just confirm what you mentinoned about your emotions!! Before I got my first child, I could look at whatever heartbreaking/emotional things without even react to it, but after I got my first child, I start to cry for the smallest things! It’s like you stepping into a new emotional state after you get your first child, and its just getting ”worse” and to be honest, I like it, it’s make me more human!
