my grandfather was a russian pilot during ww2, he had the honour of getting to meet some of the female pilots. and he was so impressed by the dedication and abilities and there fighting spirit of these women to the point that after the war he got a tattoo in russian that translated says " fallen daughters of the motherland, i salute you" in honour of the female pilots who died. say what you will about russia, but the men and women would lay there lives down for there country without a thought. whenever you ask him about the war, he slaps his tattoo and says "they were sisters, daughters, and mothers, but most importantly, they were heroes"

Any German soldier that would bring down a night witch would get an automatic Iron Cross medal. That's how much they hated those girls. Besides bombers, there were also female fighter pilots. One of most know is Lilya Litvyak aka White Rose of Stalingrad. She holds the title of ace pilot and the record for most planes shot down by a woman in a war. She was shot down in 1943, she was only 21 years old.

Without glorifying the war itself, which probably nobody should seriously do, Sabaton tells the stories that the wars wrote and also puts it into good music.They're pretty accurate, neutral, and don't make any statements. Many historical events, long forgotten or unknown, are brought back to mind. A pretty good strategy to align the music with. Because everything that arouses emotions, whether the music itself, the lyrics or the reproduction of what has happened, has led to the success of Sabaton. It´s unique and very clever.

I agree. We can celebrate displays of amazing bravery and we can show respect without glorifying the war itself. 👊🙏

I love this reaction. You are clearly an intelligent guy and I'm really pleased that you've found Nightwish and Sabaton. Both quite different but highly intelligent bands with serious messages in their music. Your appreciation of history is spot on and the way that Sabaton present their stories is a mark of respect for those real people who lived (and died) them. In Europe, and the UK in my own case, we try hard to remember these historic events so that we hopefully don't repeat them. You are so correct when you say that history teaching is undervalued in the United States, if it isn't taught as a compulsory subject in high schools. But, hopefully through music, Sabaton are trying to keep these important tales alive. I also love that Sabaton tell the stories of every side of war, there is bravery on all sides. Like today, not so much from politicians, but those on the frontline. As a completely different subject, and I'm sure someone will have told you already... Sabaton's drummer, Hannes Van Dahl, is the husband of Floor Jansen of Nightwish.... They have a 3 year old daughter, Freja,... I mean, how good are those genes???

These are the kind of female heroines that Hollywood should be celebrating and making movies about instead of trying to hijack existing male led franchises that flop and piss off existing fans. There are many, many brave and fearless women who have fought in wars and overcome huge barriers and adversity, some of whom arguably changed the course of history. Celebrate their stories, make movies about them and bring their often forgotten stories to a Worldwide audience to give them the recognition they deserve instead of lazily shoehorning in a female James Bond.

Heroism, bravery, patriotism is encompassing. It doesn't matter the nation, race or sex. I love how their Commissar went out after the war and found them all. I agree with you about the commentary. Don't take us women for granted. Another tidbit of American History that's NOT noted. On December 1, 1941 the Civil Air Patrol was formed of volunteers to patrol American coasts under the Army Air Force and to even sink U Boats and enemy tankers. Over 68 people died in defense of American coastal waters with over 170 sightings and over 50 sunk. The accomplished this with small commercial planes. This organization still exists today.

It lasted just a little over 5 months, and it got to the point where there were wild firefights and gun battles for every inch of turf, even down from room to room in bombed out buildings. Ah Sabaton again, love the song, inspired me to look it up, I had already heard of them a while back, but I'm a history teacher by training, though you'd never teach something so specific a single unit, but as a segment, an illustration of the Eastern Front (German terminology, also sometimes incorrectly called the "Russian Front" here in Germany or the Great Patriotic War as it is known in Russia) and the sheer apocalyptic level of destruction a industrialized total war brings. Europe is saturated and soaked in the Blood of the World Wars, many modern borders follow lines redrawn then and my grandparents lived through it... or not, my oh, that would have been a grand uncle I think, fell in the Battle of the Borders in the infamous August days of 1914 when Europe set it's world on fire in the Apocalypse of the Old World. Just last week a WW2 era bomb got defused, this happens with such a regularity here it's not even considered truly noteworthy, gets a line in the news and that's it. Best regards Raoul G. Kunz

“If this was shown in school…”. You have NO idea. I’m an expat teaching in a country where folks are completely oblivious to history. Frankly, it’s sad. I had ONE student (10th grader) who knew WAY more history than anyone else in class. I was stunned. How the HELL does he know all of this???? The answer amazed me. Yes, he does research and read up on history, but he starts… he’s introduced… he hits the ground running… from ONE point………. Unbelievably, it’s Sabaton. He loves them and listens to their music. Then he researches the background of all of these stories. He is the most history-astute student I’ve ever taught here, and he uses Sabaton as his launching pad. It may sound silly to suggest that a five minute heavy metal video would be a good classroom tool, but it ABSOLUTELY would be. I’ve seen it first hand. And remember, it’s just a launching pad. That’s important because these vids only hit individual stories. You don’t, unfortunately, get a broader history lesson here. BUT… these stories can open the door to that. For example, these Night Witches were just a small element in why Germany’s push on their eastern front (taking on Russia) failed so miserably… largely leading to their defeat. This song and this story can crack open the book on that larger, broader story and, ultimately, lead to a fuller understanding of the European theater during WWII. And, of course, there are about a dozen other WWII songs from Sabaton that you can throw on there to help further the discussion. It’s not just Night Witches… there’s Soldier of Three Armies, 82nd All The Way, Wolfpack, Ghost Division, Resist and Bite, and many others… which allows a teacher to highlight many different points with these songs while covering the whole broader, big picture. As I said, I’ve seen it first hand… Sabaton’s music can serve as a great tool for teaching history.

Some little details that many might miss. The props of the Soviet Aircraft are shown spinning counter-clockwise. Soviet piston-driven aircraft engines run counter-clockwise compared to American and European engines, which spin in a clockwise direction. The German plane shown late into the song has its props spinning backwards. The pilot shooting her pistol at the German plane might be a hit of creative license but there is historical precedence. During World War Two, an American fighter pilot had to eject after a Japanese fighter shot down his plane. As he was hanging by his parachute, the Japanese came around with the intent to kill him. Doing pretty much the only thing could, the American, a man from Texas, drew his Colt 1911 service pistol and started shooting. He hit and killed the Japanese pilot, making him the only person in record of having shot down an aircraft with a handgun.

On October 8, 1941, an order was issued to deploy three women's air-force units, including the 588th Regiment. The regiment, formed by Major Marina Raskova and led by Major Yevdokiya Bershanskaya, comprised primarily female volunteers in their late teens and early twenties. Due to the weight of the bombs and the low altitude of flight, the pilots did not carry parachutes until 1944. It was the most highly decorated female unit in the Soviet Air Force, with many pilots having flown over 800 missions by the end of the war, and twenty-three having been awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union title (edit: checked the numbers and that is like having 1 in every four members of a US Regiment earning the Congressional Medal of Honour!). Thirty-two of its members died in the war. 🧙🏻♀️😢 See also Lydia Litvyak - the white tulip of Stalingrad (often mistaken as white rose of Stalingrad)- 586th Fighter Regiment, first female fighter pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft in WW2, made "Ace" status (again - the highest scoring female) with 12 kills confirmed. Her last, "officially" unconfirmed, (unlucky 13?) kill was the same 'plane which shot her down - she rammed it! Denied HSU because her apparent death in 1943, at only 21y.o., was not substantially confirmed until 1990. Although, a television broadcast from Switzerland was seen in 2000 by Raspopova, a veteran of the women's night bomber regiment. It featured a former Soviet woman fighter pilot who Raspopova thought may have been Litvyak. This veteran was wounded twice. Married outside of the Soviet Union, she had three children.....

@MMA Dad: A couple of things for you. First, you should know that this story is now truly a story of history. The last Night Witch died in 2017 -- and let no person ever say that these women weren't brave. They gave everything they had to fight the Germans on the Eastern Front. As an added note, the reason why the commandant of the regiment went out to find where her girls went down was to prove to the Russian military that her girls had been shot down, and that they had not defected. In Russia, if a soldier went MIA, they would be denied awards and medals related to their service, simply because it was unknown as to the fate of the missing soldier -- and the commandant did not want that fate for her girls. She wanted them to be recognized for their service, despite everything they had been through, and everything they accomplished. May the Night Witches rest in peace, and be remembered forever! Second, I highly recommend you react to Defense of Moscow, because I think you'll like not just the song, but the video as well. Long live the Russian people!

I know you did this a while ago - wanted to tell you / explain to you something: ONE of the reasons their leader went and documented her downed Witches was that any MIA or POW pilots (or any Soldier during the war) was labelled a traitor. POWs that escaped were often put into "Penal Battalions" (look that one up - it's f**ked up) - so, by documenting that they were shot down and dead, she was clearing their names. It was what it was. Hope you're doing well and that you had a good Christmas and New Years. Be well.

Another sidenote: they carried NO parachutes, and most of their KIAs were just burned alive in their burning planes. Mrs, Rashkevich's order "DO WEAR THE PARACHUTES ON MISSIONS" was mostly ignored: the fate of parachuted pilots on enemy's ground wasn't very pleasing. And you may imagine the fate of the parachuted lady-pilot... It could be much worse then the fate of male pilot. That was the "Russian feminism" in its purity: "woman can and should defend her motherland!" The bomb thrown by hands was taken instead of two parachutes...

Unfortunately they were long forgotten in the Soviet Union, and even today they do not have the place they deserve. But they and other women in other units did not fight for equality. The losses of the Soviet Union were so high that they were on the verge of capitulation and therefore had to admit women to the front. On the German side there were anti-aircraft helpers. To understand what a war in Europe means, I recommend the fallen of WW2 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqiugXmKYrecpbc, an animated documentation. It's less than 20 minutes long. The figures given there are estimated to be low. The Soviet Union bore the brunt of the war. if you want to make a reaction video you can also split it into two parts, which it treats soldiers and civilians separately.
@vladimirt.36273 жыл бұрын
What are you talking about? Soviet Union almost capitulated. That's nonsense! And about admiting womens to the front is nonsense too. It's just that most of soviet people wanted to defend their Homeland, that's why people were editing their age in documents so they could fight with nazi's. And women were volunteering to the front too. Some women became medics, some became snipers, some pilots, some radists(is there a word like this in english?). And many people(mostly women, children because the majority of men were on the front) were going to the factories and made many weapons, guns, bullets, tanks, etc.
@Mischnikvideos3 жыл бұрын
@@vladimirt.3627 The Soviet Union lost 14 percent of its population (27 million), Germany only 8 percent (6.5 million) and fought on two fronts. If Germany had to call in women and teenager as a flak crew because of a shortage of soldiers, then that must apply even more to the SU.
@vladimirt.36273 жыл бұрын
@@Mischnikvideos Why? If Soviets won at Stalingrad in 1943, then there were other victories at the front. Germans couldn't take Moscow and even Leningrad didn't surrender to the siege. While Germany had not so much fuel for tanks. And 27 million(most of them were civillians) were lost at the end of the war, not in the middle of it. And don't forget that Hitler did call in children on front. But it's didn't help at that time.
@Mischnikvideos3 жыл бұрын
@@vladimirt.3627 Why? It's math. In Stalingrad, 10 Soviet soldiers died for one German soldier. The SU does not have 10 times as many inhabitants as Germany, so these soldiers were missing elsewhere. The number of dead Soviets are roughly half soldiers and half civilians. But the civilians have to produce the supplies and are therefore just as important, from my point of view. The SU lacked this combat and labor force. Taking only the soldiers, the losses corresponded to the size of the population. But in Stalingrad some of the soldiers had to go into battle without weapons because there wasn't enough for everyone. The SU was therefore unable to exploit its numerical superiority. The Germans did not want to occupy Leningrad and Stalin did not want to liberate the city. That meant the starvation of a great many civilians. There were dead Soviets at the beginning (more civilians) and at the end (more soldiers). In the end, the Germans sent not only children, but also old people and war invalids to the partisan fight. And that's exactly the point: if the loss of resources is similar, so are the consequences. The Soviet women had to go to the front to make up for the loss of men.

@@Mischnikvideos No. First of all: Soviet Union had enough rifles and ammo from the start of the war till the end(it's mistake that they had "one rifle for 3 people"). Second: Hitler didn't want take Leningrad, he was wanted to starve those people to death. But Stalin was wanted to liberate the city, that's why soldiers were trying to break through from the outside, that's why was created The Road of Life and food with supplies were delivered to the city from outside of the siege(but not enough to feed all people fully(sorry for my english), but still everyone had some food. How many inhabitants were in Soviet Uninon and in Germany? In Soviet Union were 195 mln. people at 1941, and in Germany 70 mln. people. About Stalingrad. In 1943 Red army surround nazi's and "destroyed" them. About producing supplies: Stalin had moved many factories from west of the country to the east, so that Germans couldn't destroy those factories that were so needed. And most of civillians and were at the east of the country.

The 588 regiment campaign was a successfull but women or not I wouldn't like to be assigned a PO-2 croppduster that's underpowered to go to war.

See the official Nightwitches Music video now that you know the story it’s of movie quality. They women pilots also did not halve parachutes, they were on suicide mission on each attack. If they got shot down and survived the crash they had to fight to the death. If they made it back to their bases the commissar would interrogate & torture them then they would be executed because they the Russia command couldn’t take the chance that they may have come back as spies. Try The Price of a Mile, Attack of the Dead Men, Metal Machines, No Bullets Fly all the official videos they are incredible but I would suggest looking each of them up for research of each story behind the story on Saboton History it’s incredible. My opinion is when we stopped saying the Pledge of Allegiance and studying the wonders of the Constitution. Great Job 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

There is a book called "The Night Witches" - many were shot down and got back. They never thought of the missions as suicide. One story is particularly sad because the navigator made it back but the pilot, within sight of the Russian lines, stepped on a landmine.

The night witches they were Russian, because they were women they got outdated planes, so as great warriors do, they had to adapt. So they would fight at both night (which men pilots were afraid to do) and cut the engines.

You can turn on automatic Russian subtitles and translation into English.

Soviet Union! Not Russia. Russia was just one country within the Soviet Union, albeit the largest. And the PO2 was used by many men as well. It was old, and never intended for this role, but it was good at it. It was slow, but it could turn on a coin and it's maximum speed was less than the stall-speed of a ME109, making it very tricky to shoot down. However, it was vulnerable to AA-fire and that caused the greatest losses among the harassment-bombers or night-bomber regiments. The commander was major Yevdokiya Bershanskaya, not Yevdokiya Rachkevich. After the war she married Konstantin Bocharov, the commander of the 889th Light Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, a male regiment that had worked closely together with the 588th, or as they later became known as, 46th Guards regiment, "Taman". That aside, women served in all roles in the Red Army during WW2. More than 800.000 served, as fighter-pilots, bomber-pilots, snipers, tank-crew, drivers, engineers, artillerists and a small number as regular infantry. The only thing that was truly unique about the 46th "Taman", was that it was the only regiment that was exclusively female.
