The PS/2 devices didn't have hotswap issues, they were serialized at POST. You can disconnect a PS/2 keyboard during an active session, plug it back in and it works fine. Windows will have issues resetting the key press repeat delays for a bit but the device still works for that session. PnP was a whole other world. Yes, you're right! PS/2 ports work differently from USB ports. PS/2 devices (keyboards and mice) communicate directly with the CPU through interrupts, which means they don't rely on the same polling process as USB devices. USB devices require the CPU to periodically check for input, which uses a small amount of processing power. On the other hand, PS/2 devices send interrupts only when there's actual input, making them slightly more efficient. While the performance difference is typically minimal, especially with modern CPUs, using PS/2 can technically free up a bit of CPU resources compared to USB. However, most people don't notice this difference in everyday use, as USB has become the standard due to its convenience and widespread compatibility.

They're still useful within the niche of high security computing. The USB protocol relies on software to translate signals coming in from the port which, thanks to how serial data works, means that that software will just ignore any data it does not understand. This means that any USB device can send any kind of data it is programmed to do so along the wire, or serve as a keylogger, with only a few modifications that are undetectable without a complete disassembly of the device and painstaking inspection under a microscope to reveal the tampering.

Additionally, they are still used in high-end data centers because of their reliability

I was going to say the same thing. Single-purpose ports are much more secure, less risk of a bad agent unplugging the mouse and plugging a malware-ridden stick.

The same thing can be done via ps/2. You can put a chip in the keyboard to playback some keypresses or a chip to log keypresses in a memory chip.
@alexandergreen1512 ай бұрын
PS/2 also weirdly initialize before post, and USB ports initialize during post (I assume because of power requirements) for the niche use cases when you need to use a keyboard immediately after post and before BIOS screen
@skullman081910 күн бұрын
the ps2 ports also allow for more inputs from your keyboard at one time and are actually faster in feedback than usb.. i still use a 1990 ibm mechanicle keyboard on my modernbuild with ps2 ports. another reason they still make them is because if you are having issues with your os, not all usb keyboards and mice can be read and control your bios the ps2 is required.

In 2011 I was pretty sad when I upgraded to a new motherboard platform, and I had to part ways with the PS/2 port for the first time. It still works for Low budget PC build. Some budget motherboards don't offer many USB ports on the back panel, and those ports often get taken up by things like Wi-Fi dongles, Bluetooth dongles, etc. If your mouse and keyboard are also USB, you'll run out of ports quickly. So, it's better to use a PS2 mouse and keyboard to free up 1-2 USB slots for things like data transfer.
