Is Rampage worth the risk? Will you be watching? World Cup DH - Who do you think will be putting it all on the line in Mont St Anne? Who do you think needs to? What do you think about social media influencers doing crazy stunts for views and likes?
@uldi1s2 ай бұрын
I'll be watching Rampage, but not live. As Neil mentions, I can't deal with the waiting. So I'll watch the live feed but a couple hours later so I can FF the waiting bits 😁 Is it worth it? for them it is, and I can understand that. As for me doing it, maybe my next life (I'm old now) DH... I'll watch it but I don't really mind who wins. Just like to see the excellent riders and their skills As for influencers doing crazy stunts... beats the numpty influencers that just do stupid trends or just show their butts for likes, don't you think?

Martyn, I'm with you concerning Rampage. I've had 12 spinal surgeries and will live in constant pain the rest of my life, but I can still walk and you're at the other extreme. There is no way people should take this risk. I used to think high risk sports were a simple live or die event and we all think we will live forever, but I learned that there is a big space in between that isn't so pleasant.

If your brake lever is sticky the issue is normally with the lever piston, not the caliper piston. There is a small spring in the lever which pushes the piston (and in turn, the lever) back once you pull the lever, if the piston is sticking, the spring cannot push the piston and lever back quickly. (I'll be watching Rampage. The riders are the only people who know if it's worth the risk. My take, If you have the skills to ride the course it's worth the risk, it's the pinnacle of Mountain biking.)

On the one side, I am eager for Blake's video on Rampage (cause, Blake 😃). And I also find it absolutely impressive what these riders do. On the other hand, the insane risks these guys take - one mistake and they have one of those life-changing or -ending results. But that is me - an old guy getting into MTB in his mid-forties doing some mellow trail riding only. Risk perception is a matter of perspective (ans skill).

I do tend to watch the redbull rampage, if i catch it live sure, but don't tune into it because this is soooo way above my own ability that i don't even comprehend the dangers involved, it's like telling someone one trillion as a number, it's hard to wrap your head around it so you end up just going "yeah cool oight" but the videos they produce of the insane stunts are spectacular.
@ChanseMacabre2 ай бұрын
Martyn's point about career security after a Red Bull Rampage win is a really chilling one when you consider the inverse, which is the folks who go out there to risk it all and are left with very little to show for it after the fact, or are left permanently scarred by their attempt. Red Bull Rampage cannot work as a spectator sport without ALL of the competitors, and if they aren't ALL treated as world-class entertainers for the sake of the Red Bull contract then we're leaving them out in the cold once the show stops. This event is billed as "an incredible opportunity" for these riders, but that's really just saying "we pay in exposure", at the end of the day. Makes me feel extra weird about that insane river gap that got taken out of Red Bull Hardline earlier in the year. Imagine getting hospitalized by a lip that was 2 degrees too steep and getting paid a measly $10k for the spectacle of it.

I think rampage is worth the risk, specifically because those riders are raising the bar, both in skill and hardware. Eventually that hardware will trickle down to the average rider (whether the use it to it's full potential doesn't matter) and then showing off their top tier skill will inspire new riders to reach as high as they can. Dangerous? Yes. Worth it? Yes.

In terms of watching and knowing people participating in extreme sports, such as mountain biking, or, as you said, BASE jumping, I would much rather watch and know people in the sport of mountain biking rather than base jumping. There is a very steady progression from getting on your first bike to throwing yourself down a mountain. In base jumping, there’s a pretty decent progression from jumping out of an airplane until you’re ready to start base jumping, but then your first step in actually base jumping is a huge leap where you have to know with absolute certainty that the precise way you packed your parachute was perfect. Your exit was perfect. The weather conditions are perfect. And even still, there is a lot that can go wrong that an inexperienced base jumper can really hurt themselves with. I know plenty of mountain bikers who’ve hurt themselves and went on to continue riding. I only know two base jumpers who have had accidents and lived. The others that I know who have had base jumping accidents have all died.

I don't think rampage is worth the risk in recent years. In the past it seemed to be judged more fairly, but in recent years the results have been strange or severely biased. Runs that look like they'd score incredibly well don't get any points, even if they had crazy variety or risk. Then a safe run (by rampage standards) with two backflips takes the win, becoming the first rider to win it 3 times. That's a ramble, but the spirit that made rampage what it is today is almost gone, so it doesn't seem worth the risk if they can't even judge fairly.
