Agreed 💯. The genetics these days the new ones. All they do is cros #1 with #2 strain and give it a name and push it to the masses. They don't put in the work the great breaders before us have. I personally don't like anything new i love the original strains i grown up with in the 80 and 90 only.

Sunlight all over the world is not equal. I pay attention to number of growing degree days. That's how I select heirloom genetics. It's gotta finish in time for my outdoor environments. If I had more time I would grow more acres of produce not just cannabis. That is all that limits me. That and building passive solar cottage offgrid at camp. And a sugar shack is next for jams, jellies, syrup, honey, ice wine, cannabis, candles, smoking meats, and other cottage products. Even the blind man hits the bullseye once in a while. I feel enviroment is #1A, genetics is #1B. You can have the BEST genetics and limit your yield with a poor environment, where as you can max out poor genetics with a stellar environment. Its a toss up for sure. Do you consider the medium as part of the environment? Or another factor in the overall grow? I've had a cold root zone from the floor it was on, while lights and environment were business as usual. The buds were small and fluffy. We are toying with so many variables at once, its like the guy spinning plates and juggling all while riding a unicycle😂

Other key factors: 1. Medium; a light, airy medium is key for happy plants. Pure soil is way too heavy and damp for indoor and wet areas. Air-Pots help a lot, to get the medium some aeration, for an example... 2. Microbes: Many standard mediums from stores, are more or less dead. Coco needs to get washed out, sometimes it gets nutrients, but in both cases, those can't be properly served to the plant, if there aren't living cultures, who are literally feeding the roots. A healthy root system is ALWAYS in direct correlation to yield. Thanks Scotty, keep it "each one, teach one" brother ❤
@MrJaman00835 ай бұрын
Microbes(Tribus,Mammoth,fish sh!t,Liquid soil) and enzymes will clean and flush the media “naturally”. Yeah we don’t use soils either, creates mud, attracts pests, and get to dense around the rhizosphere. Crop steering, lollipoping, weekly defoliation, lite stress training will all increase yield and quality if done correctly.
@erdbeerzwiebel34045 ай бұрын
You don't need microorganisms for coco grows and don't generally need them for nutrient uptake either. It depends what you feed the plants.

Genetics and Light are both easy, but environment can be by far the hardest to figure out. When your temps increase from that monster light you are blasting, your fans start to exhaust and there goes your humidity. So you add a humidifier, but then your lights turn off, which spikes your humidity and drops your temps. A controller is a necessity for environment and easily one of my better purchases.
@bovineexcrement86355 ай бұрын
that brings us back to genetics, and what will work in our environment
@MrJaman00835 ай бұрын
We don’t use humidifiers. We crop steer and feed daily, it controls the RH right inline with our target VPD. We use 8k btu ac unit per 4x8 tent. If the lights are cranked at 100% (x4 430 watt bar style leds) it levels off at 80*F and RH between 55-65% and get down to 55*F for the night cycle. We have fans in every corner top and bottom x8 6” and 1 20” fan over the lights. We don’t use controllers other then our O2 controller but we use it as a meter. Canopy par at 80% intensity at 12” off canopy is 2000/2100 mol. 80% intensity Co2 ppm at 1800. They consume 1800-2100 ppm nutrients solution per feeding 6 days a week. We break up the regimen into 3 parts: Base 6 part, 5 part Tea, 5 part finishers. Not including the soil add ins or propagation nutrients. It runs like a F1 Supercar but if you don’t stay consistent it will crash and burn like anything else.
@MrJaman00835 ай бұрын
Humidity helps fight off heat, air flow helps fights off humidity. You could run something(strain dependent) at 100*F as long as your RH is inline with your VPD, increased air flow combats humidity and bud rot, Co2 ppm increased and nutrient uptake and the plant will do just fine.

The challenge is when I have seedlings under a plastic dome with a heat pad, vegging plants in one tent, flowering in the other and am drying in my 2x2 dedicated drying tent. I prioritize drying and get as close to 60/60 as possible. After that if there is nothing drying then flowering plants take priority in the room. Seedlings are on a controlled environment under a dome and vegging plants can just deal with it for a week or two. I’ve got small tents that don’t have room for an AC or humidifier so I do my best to balance the room. My herb gets rave reviews so that method is working. I’m an older beginner grower and I’m glad I didn’t let all the VPD, DLI and PPFD and perfect environment talk online prevent me from trying. Reading things about the perfect environment and electronics scares off senior citizens when they can still get some great results.

In the 20 grows I’ve done,from tents to whole houses,here is my advise for bigger yields. 1-Always use decent seeds / genetics OBVIOUSLY. 2-always use AIRPOTS. Regardless of the situation,use them always. Because you’ve used AIRPOTS. 3-blast cold air at the AIRPOTS,straight to the holes! It will massively help--not just ‘help’ but according to weed growth professor (forgot name) -he said TEMPERATURE in bloom effects yield over EVERYTHING ELSE. I don’t grow these days to try this one but I’m going to share and I guarantee someone will do it-IT WORKS. Re use the rootball from crop by grafting a cutting onto it. A whole root system for the baby to tap into. I’m sure it would work.

The seed from Christmas tree bud almost always grew anywhere from pretty good 2 fire weed and even the mexican brick youd get 20% garbage 20% fire and 60% in-between Id grow some some right now to start a new breeding project if i knew where to get em they were strong gentics as far as growth and bug/fungus resistant, but i havent even heard about brick in 15yrs now

@brucesumner69935 ай бұрын
YES. CO2 enrichment in any grow, no matter the size.
@skankhunt4205 ай бұрын
Doesn't have to be a burner, there's co2-Tabs, co2-buckets, co2-Bags... At least in europe, there's something called the "co2 booster box"... It definitely will increase your plants activity, by at least 10%. Important is, that co2 is heavier than air, so it needs to "drop" over the canopy. Many people hang a bag up there and have the co2 sucked right out, by their fans.... It makes sense anyway, at least if the air around the tent is always more or less fresh and not in an enclosed room, to turn off the tent venting for like every half an hour and on half an hour and so on, this can of course be optimized, if there's some kind of programmable system controller in the tent, which are getting more popular and available. Usually, there's no need for a constant air exchange and it doesn't necessarily help, if temperatures and humidity are alright. Just to be clear, i'm not talking about a fan inside the tent, for the canopy, those can of course kept running 24/7 if it's easier or whatever...
@brucesumner69935 ай бұрын
Bags and buckets are useless..they don't provide near enough CO2 to be beneficial. Bottle or burner are the only options.

Reason I am asking is I want to increase my ppfd to 800-1000 , but my dli will increase a pretty good chunk? Hope this question isnt clear as mud but i tried! Lol, thanks again

photone has some good charts and info to help determine what the dli should change to.

My only question is if I follow the tips and get bigger buds and greater harvest how do I keep it a secret from the adult kids? But seriously, home growers know how much the need. Once we figure that out and refine our grow routine we’re golden. When I started growing the idea was that I needed to average an ounce per month to meet my needs. After growing a couple runs it became apparent that it’s stronger and a half per month might be adequate. I think things like staying within the confines of the space we have to work with is important. How much water will we use? I have 500 ppm out of the well and 600 if I don’t bypass the softener. The time involved in RO’ing water which works at the rate of about a gallon per hour has to be taken into consideration. Likewise plumbing, electrical and a plan on how to control the environment are important. If I used bigger lights just the warm air exiting the tent would be too much heat in the room. Unless a person is a commercial grower, still a part of the “legacy” market or all their friends and relatives are mooching they don’t need much. I look at it through the lens of someone who’s only growing for myself. If my wife could still partake I’d be trying to up my yields. I understand that providing for myself and gifting a few buds is on the low end of yield requirements. I went to a hydro store open house and talked to a few older folks about how I got started. One lady who looked to be late 70’s was overwhelmed by growing hardware. Another guy was there trying to figure out how to grow one small plant every six months. On the flip side I net one guy who grew up in Northern California and has been growing for fifty years. We found out that we both play guitar and exchanged numbers. New growers are all over the map and I wish I could reassure them all that they can carve out their own little niche like I did without approaching it like computer science.

@ScotyReaI420 I’m just a beginner but I’m retired and watched a bunch of KZbin videos with notepad in hand. I’m pretty good at figuring things out that way. KZbin is like crack to the curious.

Is it practical to attempt vpd in a tent 2by2 to 5by5 not a number that would be reliable is what I heard Scotty. Do you have a short cut variable vpd?😮😮😮🎉😊😊

It can be done, controlling environments can get tricky depending on the size. it is doable.

Opinions on Coast of Maine soil with perlite added?

CoM is a decent soil, one of our employees uses it in their grow.
