You need to switch to Merino wool socks. Avoid synthetic material or cotton for socks although a slight amount of synthetic mixed with majority Merino is ok (good for strength in wear areas}.

Most likely not. Or at least, not before it was shaved off. It's just an accumulation of fast growing skin caused by the infection. If anything it was probably uncomfortable to stand on for long periods of time due to irregular pressure and blood flow.
