I looked at videos alllll day on how to repair a spinning handle, a shower faucet that does not get hot (but the sink does). I went to ACE and Lowe's to purchase a shower stem. Out of ALL the videos I watched, it was THIS VIDEO that showed me step by step what to do, but most helpful is that it had my EXACT shower pieces. That helped alot! I didn't know about the little tab thing in the faucet handle. Once I finally realized my shower handle had one (yes, I was one of the ones who just yanked off, but had I come across this video earlier in the day, I would have known about it). anyway I unscrewed it to reattach the handle (before I knew about it, I could NOT get the faucet to work). My guess is that whomever fixed it prior to me, also didn't know about that little tab. At any rate, thanks so much. My shower is now getting hot water, the handle works! and I've returned the pieces to both ACE and Lowe's and I'm going to cancel the plumber I had scheduled for tomorrow!!!

I had the same issue, but with the cold water. I like to take cold showers. And after about 5 minutes my hot water would warm up my cold shower. I turned my boiler down to vacation mode to lower the hot water temperature. I took the faucet apart today and I've reassembled it. Hopefully now I can enjoy a 100% cold shower.

Thank you soooooo much for this video. A year ago, I went to Home depot, and the sales guy matched up the valve, but apparently the wrong valve. I got it in ok, but turning the valve on and turning the mixture valve was a choir. This morning I watched your video, went to Home Depot with the P/N you indicated, MXT07, and followed your instructions, and now it works like a charm. Good Video....

I have one of these 'vintage' valves in my dulplex rental home. I replaced the valve a few years back, but have never been able to adjust the temp easily over the past years. . . . .and it has been a hassle for my tenants. I will be replacing the valve once again, and thank you SO much for the very well done video and suggestions for matching the valve with correct unit. . . . and clear procedures with professional and detailed steps! Jan Grigsby thank you for the kind words. That day may come when you'll need to replace the complete valve. these are good but very limited to the accessories for it, even for a rental. this was one thing I did when I renovated my rental near Huntington Beach (In 2010) I replaced all valves and updated to Moem. I'll be doing the same when I renovate 2 bathrooms in my house. Sometimes a little extra is worth it in the long run. Thanks for chiming in and thank you for viewing.

Excellent video. Especially how he describes the differences in the two Mixit Cartridges. I also like the fact he cleaned everything (especially the on/off knob and hot/cold water leaver) prior to putting them back on. Regarding the white sealant around the Eustachian.. there's 2 schools of thought. One is to seal it as this gentleman did. However the 2nd school of thought is by sealing it any water caused by a leaking valve won't be able to get out and will ruin the wall behind. This is a similar thought to sealing a toilet to the floor. A good method to clean inside the water delivery pipe is to use an old toothbrush. While he uses Plumbers Grease to grease the inside of the water pipe and the Mixit Cartridge.. most DIY people won't have this. One can use WD-40 which is fish oil based and won't hurt either the rubber O-ring or any component. One can also use K-Y Jelly which is glycerine based and water soluble. If you wish to save money and do it yourself you can simply pull out the old cartridge and clean it. Use quad ought (0000) steel wool on the Eustachian and Bonnet nut to clean them. Use WD-40 and an old toothbrush to clean the plastic Lever and Knob. Use WD-40 and a paper towel or soft (lent free) cloth to clean the Plumbers Grease off of the Mixit Cartridge. You'll note that over time minerals in the water causes the Plumbers Grease to become sticky. This is why I prefer WD-40 or K-Y Jelly. You can also completely unscrew the Cartridge and use a toothbrush and WD-40 to clean all the threads... then simply reassemble it. Use the 0000 steel wool or 120 grit sandpaper to clean the brass rings which go onto the Cartridge. Many times all that is wrong with the Mixit Cartridge is that the rubber O-Ring is bad and letting water leak... this and the sticky old plumbers grease. You can simply buy an assortment of O-Rings from Harbor Freight Tools for $5.99 here's the link: www.harborfreight.com/225-piece-nitrile-o-ring-assortment-67677.html Simply put on a new rubber O-Ring and reassemble according to this gentleman's directions. I've saved a lot of money by cleaning all the Mixit cartridges in my rentals this way. Note: WD-40 means Water Displacement 40. It was invented in San Diego in the 1950's for the aircraft industry and military. They needed an product to displace water and stop parts from rusting and corroding. It took them 40 times to get the ingredients right.. and the basic ingredient is fish oil.

I think you meant escutcheon. If you watched how he applied caulking on the rim of the escutcheon, you would see that he did not apply any on the bottom part. That is to allow any water from a leak that accumulates behind the escutcheon to flow down to the drain below. I have seen a similar video and the plumber said to position the hole on the stem with the red mark on top not below. Which one is correct?

After 30+ years of living in this house, we were the first owners, I always thought the dumb plumbers had plumbed my shower backwards. After installing the new cartridge per your instructions (red dot down) it works like it should, so yes the red dot direction does make a difference. Also, the new O-ring must have been a bit larger and I could not get it to slide in. I got a small deep socket so as not to be hitting the brass stem (socket resting on white plastic) and tapped it in with a hammer. Thanks so mcu for the video.

@@TheShackHome Thanks. BTW, re the cartridge fit, I spoke too soon. It turned out to be super hard to turn. I tried 3 different cartridges (Mixit, Danco, Ace). None fit correctly. The only thing, the stem didn't go till the necessary position, though I cleaned and applied the plumber grease. I used a muffler hammer and knocked on it, it went in the pipe. Thankfully, I found yours and was able to get hot and cold water from my shower. It wasn't too easy as the circumference of the back part of the replacement cartridge was a tiny bit bigger (unnoticeable to the bare eye) than the old one. I ended up replacing the plastic washer located on the back with the one that came on the new one and using the whole old back part on the new cartridge.

And installing the replacement cartridge was actually pretty easy, thanks to the detailed instructions and info from this video. One point to emphasize that I am not sure if it was mentioned or not- the cartridge comes from the factory in the "Open" position. Turn the valve to Closed before you test the water line for any leaks, or you will be freaked out like I was when you turn your water main line on again, and water comes gushing out of your faucet. And note that you will have to turn the valve about 50 times to get it to the Closed position.

This video is amazing, I would just like to add one more thing if there's a plumbing supply store near you I highly suggest you go there because they should have the actual mixit cartridge that comes with a brass fitting on the back, instead of the plastic ones that come from Home Depot and Lowe's. Also make sure you tighten up that screw on the back of the cartridge. After I installed mine it worked for about a week and then it wouldn't shut off. After taking it apart I realized the screw and gaskets were left inside the valve along with three other screws and three other gaskets all the way in the back from previous cartridge replacements.

That happened to me too just now I , I shit the water off took the cartridge out and the water was still flowing out the pipe , I look inside and the screw that goes on the back of the cartridge had fell off and was stuck inside the pipe , I put the cartridge back in and took it out again and the screw came out of the pipe , I put everything back together and tried it out, hot water was on the left and cold was on the right idk how that happened 🤦🏻♂️

FYI to all... The instructions on the back of the package state to install with red circle/ dot pointed up. Not sure if that makes a difference or not. Narrator here said “down”. Also, make sure you use the plumbers grease and not putty. Use it liberally and it will slide in like is shown in the video, otherwise, you may need a rubber mallet to get it seated up to the brass-plastic-brass stop point.

Thanks for the video. Last time installed was wrong part. Had to take a file to the thing to get it in. Never worked right. Also, the instructions had to be printed in so many languages there apparently wasn't enough room on the package to complete them. Nothing to say in what order the washers were to go. Nothing about the red dot. The schematic was useless, even with a magnifying glass.

Great Video, I would like to add that the red dot to suppose to face upwards and a side note to help people out would be to loctite the screw because apparently they get loose and you will lose the screw in the pipes.
@ThereseElizabeth6715 жыл бұрын
Eascoaster Great advice. I just assumed the screw was tighten. I lost my screw in the pipe when we replaced it. Any ideas as to how I can get it out? Or just replace it?
@Eascoaster5 жыл бұрын
@@ThereseElizabeth671 the best answer is both. I was able to fish out one from the pipes in one bathroom and the other bathroom it is suck somewhere in there that I can't see. If you need to use another screw then use the old from your replacement.
@WxCat19624 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I replaced it with a new one exactly like you said, but it was still hard to turn the hot & cold handle. I found out that if you loosen the chrome cover sleeve, that goes on the main pipe over the cartridge, a little bit at a time (not loose) it will turn easier.

YOU ROCK!! 5 STARS ALL THE WAY!! I was so skeptical of doing this for the first time on my own at 9pm on a Saturday night, hoping that I didn't have to keep the water off until a Plumber could come fix it on Monday. Watched your video like 3 times, went to Lowe's to grab the parts, came home and installed it. Only thing that was a little concerning, the valve fits, works great, like butter moving it. the old one slid right in/out, the new one required a little tapping with a wrench and then it slid in, I did clean out the inside of the pipe a lot before putting in the cartridge with Plumbers Silicone Grease. Should I be worried that I had to tap it in? It is 1988 original valve to the house. I just don't want a quiet leak dripping down the walls or something to the downstairs and taking out the the drywall. Again! You are a lifesaver! And I truly appreciate it! Shawn
@TheShackHome2 жыл бұрын
CoastalBreeze73 you are very welcome and thanks for taking your time to view. The cartridge should slide in you shouldn't have to tap it at all. Its been enough time has or have you seen any dripping at all? If the tub or shower sits all day in the evening just feel around the handle and area see if any wetness if all dry you should be good.

thanks for the video... so theres 2 different models.. the best bet is to take it out and check to see if you currently are using a brass backing or a plastic one.. use the same one you have👍

Good video. Make sure no paper debris is left behind due to wiping out the unit. Always take the original cartridge to the store to make sure it is the correct one if you do not already have the correct part number. Often a drip is caused by the washer on the end of the cartridge decaying. But note, the rubber washer in the end (held in place by a screw) is non-standard in size, meaning that you can not buy a replacement at Home depot when the valve starts to drip. But you can buy one a little too large and sand it down in diameter and it will fit. But it must fit very snugly or it will leak. Don't sand it any more than necessary. A soft rubber washer will not do the job as it will leak. I can not stress these points too much.

I had a professional plumber doing it. Two visits a week apart. First visit, he removed the part, ordered it. Second visit he tried to install the cartridge, it didn't fit, so he combined parts from existing cartridge and the one he ordered , rebuilt it and installed (wasn't easy). $289.00.

This was very helpful like your instructions and that you show and say what cartridge to use. Thanks a lot. Question: How can I loosen up the nug it is too tight and hard to take off? ... How can I get more cold water than hot my temp gets more hot than cold? The previous plumber made to get more hot than cold and it gets pretty hot so in order to get warm water I need to turn on the water all the way open. He just said I messed up on the cold water your going to get more hot than cold and didn't fix it.
@TheShackHome2 жыл бұрын
Yuri the temp issue may cure itself with a new cartridge. if a wrench wont work calcium build up will make it hard to undo. try some WD-40, Liguid wrench or B'laster. They are penetrating Catalyst should help you. might also try a pair of vice grips for a better hold on the nut.

LOL... turn this nut and remove the cartridge...but first, turn off the water main. Just kidding. Great video. Now I know what was wrong with the one in my old apartment. It was too tight, and the hot and cold seemed to change strangely when you adjusted it. It wasn't just reversed. It was random and wonky.

I used to always change these out myself, but last time I couldn't get the nut off on one shower, so I had a plumber come out and do both showers. The master one is easy to turn again, but the hall bath is really not much better if at all. The plumber told my boyfriend the whole valve in the wall probably need replacing. Both valves are the same age and get the same usage. I don't know what cartridge he put in since I wasn't home. I have a friend who said this happened to him and he took a sanding drum bit on his drill and gently smoothed out the part of the pipe where the cartridge engages the valve and it works great now. Any harm in my trying that? It would make sense that with my hard water, it could just have a lot of deposits making it hard to turn. I swivel the master bath one daily (to all hot while waiting for hot water to get there), but my roommate just leaves it in the middle and never turns it. So I am thinking maybe it got buildup in there.

Video a great help but according to accurate instructions on package "Red mark on stem assembly must point up." I had to reinstall as instructions in this video (8:34) left me with hot and cold reversed. Still saved me money but a waste of time.
