INCREDIBLE FEMALE SHEARER | Shearing Romney lambs and chatting with Katy Gardner

In this vlog I am shearing with the lads and lassies from Wigtownshire at Viewfield Romneys.
Katy Gardiner is a little known shearer even in Scotland as she just works away quietly doing her thing but I felt it was important that I shared her story and how much of a role model she is for women in agriculture.

Hi Cammy! Why are the sheep being sheered now close to cold wet Fall and Winter weather? Wouldn’t it be better in the spring like April and May so they are cooler for the summer?? Karen
@TheSheepGame
@TheSheepGame 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen. I should have probably said this was 18th August. Because they are a strongwool breed if you don’t shear them as lambs they will have far too much wool by next June. It also lowers the quality of the wool and this romney wool is actually pretty good compared to most wool we have in Uk. Lambs also do great after being shorn as they will graze more during the day, they won’t get stuck in briars, no late season flystrike, stay clean all winter and many other benefits 😊

I think he said that being cooler prompts them to eat more, which makes them better prepared for winter.

Obviously female shearers are a bit more rare, but a lot of us work in agriculture (dairy for us) and it’s great to see Katie on your channel. People are always surprised when they see my very petite daughter milking 600 on her own 😁. The more girls that look at agri and consider a future career in it, the better.

Just enjoy watching you and your team working together and having a good time. I was raised on a farm of cattle and vegetable gardens. Had 1 garden that was 225' x 175' and one in the old rodeo pin 75' x 150'. We raised peas of 3 different kinds. Corn, potatoes, snap beans, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, cantaloupe and watermelons. Instead of playing sports I worked in the gardens till dark. So that's where I learned to work hard and established what you call grit of working long hours after school and the summer months. I was super proud of my Dad and I look back now why we worked because coming up in the 60's people didn't have a lot of money but we all managed to work together and had fresh food off the farm to feed people in need and no one was without food. I'm still like that today giving to the need of people. This world has changed but it hasn't changed me. Just wanted you to all know a little about me growing up. So as we say in Texas y'all hang in there and I'll do my part by watching your amazing videos. God Bless you all❣️❣️❣️☺️🥰

@SharynHay, if you want to learn how to understand the Celtic dialects, just wander down to your nearest Irish pub. You'll find yourself exposed to a wonderful variety of people who will help you understand anything you want to know, particularly during a musical sesún (usually on Saturday or Sunday afternoons) It's a call to all the local musicians to have a pint and a laugh. Everyone is welcome and it's terrific fun that you won't find in most bars. (It usually has far more relaxing music!)

Sharyn, I love listening to him too, and I’ve also noticed that he speaks differently to his friends/colleagues. It does sound like fast-forward! But I love it because I feel I’m hearing how people in Scotland really talk, rather than trying to “anglicize” their accents. I’d rather learn to understand them than have them adjust for me. I’m learning to speak Irish, and Scots Gaelic is next on the list. Maybe that will help train my ear to pick up the accents. But like you, I enjoy watching regardless. Cammy and his family and friends are so personable, and of course the drone photography of the area is icing on the cake. I’m 50% Scottish, according to the DNA companies, and the family story is we’re from the Highlands and Hebrides. So it’s like going home in a way. Maybe you and I will run into each other in a pub one day! Slainte!

Katy is a great shearer. Quick, strong, efficient, gentle, thorough. You boys can aspire to become gentleman shearers. You guys just have to keep practicing. But really, you lads should leave the hard work for the women like Katy and Lizzy who are clearly just better cut out for this kind of work than boys are. You gentlemen are really well suited to collect the wool and make sure these hard working women have refreshing drinks and fresh & tasty homemade snacks during their busy day. That is of course after you have made sure to get the kids ready for the day, made a hearty breakfast, set out her clothes, made the beds, washed the dishes, and do a little tidying up around the house before heading out to help these professional women. Remember, don't worry about the women shearers being so good. They are just made to do this.

I think the girls have for some reason a wee bit more of a sedative manner with the sheep that relaxes them and that may make them a bit easier although I am not saying it is not hard physical less I can't even image for anyone. But the Sheep the girls sheer seem to be slightly more relaxed. Maybe a mothering touch thing? And I also see you guys being very gentle not saying that you are not you know I comment always how wonderful, but there is just a slight difference on how the sheep seem more calm with the ladies :) Love it Katy you are rocking it. prob to late for this year cam but idea for vid next year, different sheep need trimmed different ways like these are lambs and don't have a "fleece" yet so it don't come off in one go, other sheep don't have woolly legs so you follow a different path across them, maybe show the difference in that . also would like to see the difference between shearers where they start on a sheep and how they handle them . all the best kid

@TheSheepGame
@TheSheepGame 2 жыл бұрын
That actually makes it easier as it means the wool is short and light and doesn't pull the skin like a normal fleece does. Less chance of nicking these ones. They just have wool in a lot of places that cross bred lambs don't so it all takes more time to shear off. Cheers June

The sheep seem so cooperative. Is this because they get used to it when they're young, or is it because they automatically hold still when they're off of their feet?
@TheSheepGame

Hi Chris, it’s because of the way the shearer holds them which takes a few years to learn 👍

Cammy! You mentioned you don't think you're good at Romney's. Why is that? Is it the texture of the wool or the nature of the breed? What breed suits your style best?
@rebeccaburrow7199
@rebeccaburrow7199 2 жыл бұрын
I think part of the difficulty is the wool on head and legs, which not all breeds have. Many are clean legged and have no wool on their heads. They are tough areas. You dont want to knick an eye!

Are those beautiful fleeces? They certainly looked it! You don’t comment on the wool quality, but those of us who keep sheep for wool would be interested to hear thoughts and comments.

Sorry Pat. I’m so used to the Uk and the wool here being of poor quality but this stuff is actually very good. Not at Merino level but it would be some of the best wool produced in Scotland.

And Scottish countryside is so beautiful how could you not love it. I'm a horse girl so I did love the one where you got up on the horse and had your friend round up the Shetlands. I also really love to watch the dogs work.

Hi, I'm a bit late to the party here. I'm a professional artist and painted an entire series of sheep being sheared at my in-laws farm last summer. Would you mind if I used this video footage to paint more? . I've struggled to find female sheep shearers, here in Shropshire, although I know they're out there!
