I’ll never forget when people kept parking in the yard of my brother in law’s Sheep farm in Wales. My nephew backed his tractor right up to the back of the car so they couldn’t back out. When they returned from their ‘walk’ it was so amusing watching them! The farm is in the middle of nowhere. I feel your pain.

One of the farmers in my village puts up pictures of sheep mauled by dogs on his gates…not nice to see, but it gets the message across loud and clear. My dog has grown up walking the lanes next to livestock fields and doesn’t even blink at them, but he still goes on the lead every time, at the end of the day he’s an animal and they’re all unpredictable 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yup, same. All it takes is for them to me too close to the threshold one day and not listen to you. We don't have too many sheep where I am, but lots of horses. I've worked really hard on desensitisation and my dog doesn't bat an eyelid now but she still gets put in a calm sit and clipped on the lead when one goes by, There is no way I could live with myself if anything happened

Unfortunately, the general public are rude everywhere. I live in the US and our neighbors decided to shoot fireworks over my horse pasture. Another time we looked out to see a group of people throwing stones at the horses to watch them run. Needless to say, we eventually had to reconfigure our pasture away from the road. We lost grazing, but the horses were safer. I’m sorry for your lamb losses.

Cammie, can you get a story onto local news about the impact of dogs on sheep? Does your region have a local news channel? I've got to think that if more people simply knew/understood the negative impact of their dogs on the livelihoods of shepherd-families that they'd be more careful.

That would be great... and I try to be a positive person... but I doubt it'll make much of an impact if any at all. People who are already dismissive like the man from yesterday, or apologize but don't seem to "get it" will do the same thing again and again because they don't think about anyone else but themselves and/or people closest to them. I wish it wasn't that way, but from what I've seen, people are mostly oblivious to how their seemingly "innocent ignorance" could cause problems for others.

Targeting places that dog owners have to visit like Veterinary centres, pet food shops, groomers etc would be a good idea. In the olden days they used to do public information adverts on TV to educate about these kind of things. Not the same audience figures these days.

This is my favorite channel. You're videos usually post in the morning in New York State, and it's such a great way to start the day. I also work with dogs, and anyone who let's a dog off leash without a solid recall is crazy. It's dangerous and irresponsable. If you value your dog, keep it on a lead!

When I used to trail ride my horses, invariably an unleashed dog would run straight at them and the owner would say "It's okay ..my dog likes horses." Mine were more upset about bikes being where they didn't belong, but a friend had a Thoroughbred that hated dogs. She would respond that maybe their dog liked horses but her horse didn't like dogs and could easily kick their dog into their next life!

Good for you Cammie. It is mind blowing to me that a dog owner is STUPID enough to believe their dog is that well trained that it will come to them when the dog is in hunting mode. We had 2 collie lurchers and we used to go Into a field where sheep and lambs were and even though our dogs knew they weren't allowed to chase (and they never did )but it was OUR responsibility to keep our dogs on a lead and we ALWAYS had our dogs on a lead while we were walking our dogs there
@thisoldnurse1521
@thisoldnurse1521 Жыл бұрын
Actually Cammie’s dogs have good recall. My dog and people in my group who show our breed dog have good recall. It is one of the very and most important things to keep your dog safe in the event day your leash breaks, or he escapes your fenced yard… obedience is part of CKC or AKC and classes are given. That said, we do follow the rules where we live, all dogs on leash. When out hunting with your dog in the woods you get your dogs to come back with the duck. We don’t use our retrievers for hunting purposes but others do. If hiking dogs can be off lead ( if you have well mannered dogs ), and trust your dog to stay on the trails with you and not run away. She never run across farm fields as much of the farm fields here in 🇨🇦 are fenced however we do have Wild Critters wolves, coyotes and foxes that will get over or under a fence. Generally here on the east coast of Canada, it’s Dairy Cattle and Beef Cattle with a few fields of sheep. The local Sheep Farm next to me, he keeps the sheep in his barn most of the winter and in the spring has them out in his fenced field, of course with lambing and all and in summer into fall he has a grazing pasture on some little island. I used to walk on leash, my old Golden Retriever Abby RIP, by there every so often as she was entertained with the animals, she had countless sheep stuffed animals as well as alpaca and llama stuffies. I miss Abby RIP you know sometimes you get a real good dog and when they’re gone..
@thisoldnurse1521
@thisoldnurse1521 Жыл бұрын
Recall is for your dog’s safety. Always taught inn Obedience Classes one of the most if not the most, because even if your dog was on leash and the lease broke and he ran into traffic!!! I had a leash break in class one day. Does happen. So if this older man had good recall with his dog, he could’ve kept them from Cammie’s field. There are dogs that will NEVER have got recall. Those definitely need to be on leash for the dog’s protection (traffic) and for protection from some other animal (skunk, porcupine, dog) or a child afraid of dogs for example

@@thisoldnurse1521no matter how good you “Think” your dogs recall is, if you are in a “Public” place, ALL dogs should be on a leash, ALWAYS! Why should I not be able to take my grandson for a walk in the countryside or in the woods because some inconsiderate dog owner thinks they have priority over said areas to walk their dogs off leash. My Grandson is scared of dogs, any dog coming towards him will cause him to panic and scream. I’m sick to death of owners saying “it’s ok, he won’t hurt you”. EVERY dog that approaches him is a threat to him. If I was to walk around in public, with a loaded weapon, cocked and ready, I would be perceived as a danger and would be arrested. Same principle should apply to an unrestrained dog that’s out in public.

Thanks for the entertainment!! I love your sense of humor. The documentary signs are a great idea, hopefully it will have a positive effect and keep the dogs on leash. Jock is becoming quite the little helper, so cute. I laughed at Lizzie's "oops" while milking the ewe😊. Some people are rude and I think COVID has exacerbated rudeness, people were isolated and didn't have to be as social. We are starting a sheep and goat farm this spring and we will have livestock guardian dogs, not only for the coyotes but for the irresponsible, rude people as well. And yes, we will have signs posted warning of the dogs and the electrified fencing. Keep up the good work!

Happy Birthday, Cammy!! I had a real problem with snowmobilers coming through the grain field, up to my sheep barn and then around the tree line and to the opposite side of the barn, effectively running my ewes from one side of the barn to the other, bashing into each other. A few aborted their lambs. I took photos of an aborted lamb made signs and posted them right under the no trespassing signs, where these people were accessing the property. Maybe you should ask if you can post a photo of your dead lamb and the dog that killed it at the local pet food store. When these idiots then took another route, running my horses and they aborted foals, I got the police involved. They were nice enough to park a defunct police car at the end of my driveway. Best snowmobile repellent, ever!

I live in Somerset, a local farmer had laminated pictures of his sheep that had been savaged by dogs and put them up on the stiles on the footpaths. I would never let my dog off the lead where there are livestock but it certainly made me think and I’d happily challenge anyone who ignored their warnings. That was a few years ago and I still think about the damage that was done to the poor sheep, people just don’t think their lovely pet would inflict such damage. Anyway, I love your videos!❤️

i have own big dogs all my life, german shepards, mastiffs, rottis, and they have all been very well trained, with great recalls but they are still dogs, and when a deer or a sheep are near they are unpredictable and their 'Cave dog' behaviour comes out. i use shock collers for just this instance and the dogs are trained on to respond to the lowest level of shock which is a small tingle when applied to a human and they have never ever chased a sheep or animal, or ran off a cliff chasing an animal ans they cannot ignore the coller. dogs need training people, they also need treating like dogs and not your children, irresponsible dog ownership is not acceptable

I think the safest way to get rid of the problem is by saying either of these on the sign: 1) Rat poison found on trail, please keep dogs on a leash. 2) Sheep guarddog in nearby area, free roaming dogs on paddock are at risk of injury or worse. Neither 'demand' anything from entitled idiots but both give reason enough to keep dogs on a leash. Tho i bet with both you'd have idiots calling the cops to complain...

Couple of tricks to fencing that I've learned over the years. Firstly, fetch an old milk crate to stand on, it increases the force you can hit with. Secondly, if you're holding a stake for someone else to hit, left hand if you're right-handed (vice versa if you're a leftie) and put a glove on. That way, when the person with the hammer misses, it ain't your master hand that gets hit, and the glove keeps splinters out of your hand. Thirdly, get hold of fencing pliers. Bloody useful, for all manner of stuff.

You have the patience of a Saint mate. 👏👏 The SNP’s ‘Right to Roam’ Act 2003 has caused other knock on problems. I’m a Deer Stalker. Many of my contracts are in Scottish Forrests. Many forrest blocks are owned by different landlords but use the same tracks and are next to one another and mostly don’t have any boundary signs, fences or gates. The Act makes it trespass if you’re in a vehicle, whereby the police can impound your vehicle. If you’ve a gun in the car they can arrest you for trespassing with a firearm. I get maps from the forrestry Co but they are usually inaccurate. Boundaries rarely run in straight lines and even though I did map reading in military, so am expert, it is impossible to clearly identify your ground from a neighbours. Often there’s no mobile signal for a GPS ref either. Furthermore, you have to drive onto neighbours ground just to be able to turn the car round. So I decided to call Police Scotland to explain the situation and ask if officers would allow trespass where the trespasser had reasonable grounds to be in the area. The Wildlife Cop did not want to discuss the law or my predicament he only wanted to know how I transported my rifle. 🤷🏻‍♂️ He was trying to find out when I was on the land so I’m pretty sure he was intending a stop and search. So so told him the rifle is in the car safe box and cut the conversation short. I then tried the Forrestry Co and they said because of R to R it was not worth investing in boundary structures because the public smash fences down climbing them and leave gates open or steal em. Another own goal for the Silly Numpty Party🫤

So, I've two dogs, an australian kelpie, and a border collie. I've tried to train both dogs well, and I'm 99.9% confident that their recall is good. I've had them off leash when going past ducks, swans, roedeer and more, with no problems. And they don't go far from me or try to chase. Still, I don't let them off leash when we're close enough to sheep and other livestock so that they may notice them. They're good dogs, but there are still times when they need to be on a leash just in case, because they're dogs. It's sad that so many don't understand that leashes are very neccessary at times.
@jessepitt
@jessepitt Жыл бұрын
Really the only way to make your dogs totally reliable around livestock is to stock proof them like a herding or hunting dog. Once they have moved past viewing the animals as potential prey and see them as their responsibility they are pretty reliable. I have four dogs and they are all stock trained. They are much happier protecting livestock than chasing it.
@Nemrai
@Nemrai Жыл бұрын
@@jessepitt I agree with that it's very important to train your dogs around other animals as much as possible, both for their own and the other animals sake. However, dog breeds aren't all the same, some have way more preydrive than others, and aren't likely to be safe around most animals(and the owners should be aware of what the breed is like). So you shouldn't take the risk of having them off-leash around other animals. Also, not everyone are able to keep livestock around.

Look at Jock, he’s so proud of the work he’s doing! He’ll be a good adult with parents like you and Lizzy. Cammie, you should’ve put your finger up on top of the rail and give it a whack with that BIG whammer! Spray some of that iodine on it and let it dry at least! That would have fixed it! Indian Health system here in the states is quite like yours in Scotland. I am Native American (Cherokee). I have a primary care physician with scheduled visits but can also do a walk-in visit if needed. Our hospitals have emergency room care and urgent care too. If we need special services such as an endocrinologist, as I do, the primary care physician will write an order and they send me to an endocrinologist outside of the Indian Health System. The money is provided by treaties with the US government for them taking our land and other atrocities. No, you’re not going mad. People in the USA have totally lost it and our laws are upside down too. I pray every day for us and people all over the world.

Happy birthday Cammy. I live in Brazil, northeast in Bahia. Here we have a lot of problems with dogs. Must of them are street dogs and last mont they killed around 200 goats and sheeps of neighbor near by. At my small farm i have 2 Maremmano-Abruzzese Sheepdog, they stay with the flock all the time, very effective to protect form other dogs , wild animals. They work well with your dogs. I hope it works for you as well.

Here in the US I've had problems with neighbors riding their bikes on my property and shooting fireworks that scared my livestock. People are just so disconnected from rural life and where their food comes from that they have no respect for livestock or personal property. There are recreational parks for a reason. If you want to play with your ball, go there. Not on somebody's private property. I'm also an April baby. Go us! Oh, and get him Lizzy. lol
