There’s only one source for the greenest, softest, tastiest and most buttery rich grass....always the other side of the fence! We gave up Guard dogs and moved to strictly fleet shepherding dogs. Our chickens follow the sheep around in pastures. They really help the soil.

What do you mean by fleet shepherding dogs? I would be interested to know more! -the Shepherdess

The rye will make the legumes set more nitrogen, because it is a nitrogen sink, but that will make great forage

I'm new to cover cropping. Can you explain what the terms "set more nitrogen" and "nitrogen sink" mean?

As the ewe with lambs is tame you should feed her concentrates out of your hand as she is not getting enough to rear those lambs. She needs more to rear out of season lambs.

Great tip here! Thank you for sharing. We did supplement her a bit with some grain and all stock protein. 👍🏻 She has pulled through really well despite the off season twins. 🐑🐑 -the Shepherdess

Yes; clovers and vetches fix nitrogen. Rye can be a bit of a nitrogen sink, but the legumes more than compensate for that. And the rye has its own benefits (excellent in terms of root biomass/SOM, nutrient retention, erosion control). That's a classic mixture you've got going. It must be nice to see something that green this time of year!

Why not remove the baling twine and spread out the hay to improve access by more sheep?

We do, just didn’t catch that part on camera. 👍🏻 -the Shepherdess

FYI, sheep will eat that baling twine, it can get stuck and will kill them.

Yes! We make sure to cut it off. 👍🏻 Thank you for your comment. 😁
