Richard Saunders is out on a double-barrelled pest control session in this week’s episode. We join him as he kicks off targeting rabbits that are causing problems around pony paddocks before moving on to another farm to pick off crows, jackdaws and rooks that are attacking the lambs.
Also in this week’s episode, Mat Manning gives his verdict on the Gamo HPA MI Tactical. This awesome gas-ram airgun comes with a scope, mounts and bipod, and boasts amazing value for airgunners who don’t want to spend a fortune on hardware.

Thank you Richard and Co. Good to see some Rabbit shooting with a 12ft/lbs and the field craft used to get within distance. Also to see the benefits of the FAC when having to shoot the Corvids at 50m.

@@daniellewis5413 Hi Dan, don’t get caught up with some of these KZbin videos shooting Living things at long ranges. Yes people can kill With a sub 12ftlb Airgun at 50yrds and more. But it’s so easy to misplace your shot, the tick of your heart, slight gust of wind, the quarry moves at the last second and you have wounded a living thing that could take days or weeks to die. It’s one thing shooting targets and constantly hitting the kill zone, but totally different shooting live quarry. When some of these KZbinrs brag about shooting quarry at 50 or70yds it’s only the inexperienced hunters who think they are good . If you want to shoot big bags edge your bets and get the closet shots you can. Field craft first.👍

Daniel must feel so privileged to have experienced both your expertise. Having two Hunter/Oracle's willing to dispense such wisdom is awe inspiring....but remember one thing, "beware of false prophets" because there's only 1 Andy Watkins.

Always enjoy your content Matt always something to take away.How ever I feel I must take you to task.Apart from forced advertising and sponsorship how do you keep a straight face advertising BASC.Their disgraceful behaviour on a Non Voluntary Non Consultation on a lead ammunition ban defies belief.If we lose lead as an ammunition medium it's good bye airguns goodbye rimfires good bye small bore shotguns or in proof older Damascus type shotguns.BASC have done absolutely nothing for grass roots shooters in any discipline.They removed legal cover then the old director John Swift sabotaged reach and the lead ammunition group.All they are doing is covering high end game shooting.They are doing nothing to protect pest controllers ,part time keepers or professional airgun shooters.Its no wonder shooting sports in the UK are so divided and un protected or catered for at Government level.I have wrote to my mp and voiced my concerns.BASC are a spent force for shooters rights it's not the organisation Stanley Duncan founded.Keep up the good work it's not a personal dig at you as you are an airgun ambassador as far as I am concerned.All the best stay safe.Kind Regards Tony

I gave up with BASC thirty years ago. Why? Because all they were interested in was basically themselves, not the interests of the members they were “supposed “ to represent. Regards.

@@nigelwiseman2262 It's such a shame I agree entirely with your observations.It is not the organisay Stanley Duncan would recognise today.I do believe transitioning from WAGBI to BASC was done with all "shooting sports" in mind,not today though!.Thanks for your thoughts.All the best.Tony

In 50 years of shooting I have never seen, or met anybody that has, a Rook attacking Lambs (nor a Jackdaw for that matter), they feed amoung sheep as the flock churn up the ground exposing insects and worms etc. Please give me a link to a clip of a Rook, not a Crow, attacking sheep.
@richsaunders6515

Hi Chris. It's interesting because to a certain extent I think it is a learned behaviour. On one of my farms the corvids don't seem interested in the lambs and the farmer says she's never had an issue with them, so I leave them alone. I'm guessing perhaps there is enough in the way of other food / protein for them to not need to attack the lambs. However, on the farm in the video rooks and crows are a huge issue. Once they can move around, lambs are usually ok, but newborn lambs born in the field can have several rooks and crows on them within seconds. They'll even congregate around a ewe when she is ready to give birth and then attack as soon as the lamb hits the ground. I see jackdaws less often, but they will if they get the chance. Perhaps its down to food availability locally - if the corvids get what they need (protein?) from other sources they don't need to attack the lambs. But if they don't, then the lambs become fair game. At the end of the day, pest control is about controlling pests that present a threat. I've said before that in my view 'a pest is only a pest when it is being a pest'. That's my way of viewing that a bird doesn't need to be shot just because it is on the GL. By the same logic I'll leave rabbits and squirrels alone if they are not having a detrimental impact on their local environment/eco-system. I hope that helps. Rich.

@@richsaunders6515 If it's happening that often, I'm guessing you could film it with all the equipment that you have, a Rook attacking a Lamb, not eating a stillborn or clearing up the afterbirth.?

You're joking,aren't you? Dick goes out without zeroing his gun, fluffing shots like a drunk man with a blunderbuss...has to go home..but returns after some diazepam and a rifle change to FAC gun...after staying up all night on the range. Andy's the man, but then again you're an Oracle...so who am I to contest.
