So much of what Erik does in the musical is just this. Playing a part. He crafts himself personas and plays them, the protective, watchful angel of music, the dreaded opera ghost, the seductive phantom, the supreme composer. I love the way this scene is choreographed to show Christine slowly realising that this isn't Piangi. Because it's safe to assume that the Phantom wouldn't let anyone touch his beloved Angel of Music in the way he does in this song, Piangi was probably given entirely different, more tame stage directions for this scene. So when the Phantom starts this song, touching her in more intimate ways than rehearsed, Christine probably first assumed that this was improvisation, so whilst she was mildly uncomfortable and still worried about the threat of the Phantom looming over the production, she probably didn't have alarm bells ringing yet. But then he takes it too far in his passion and touches her in a way that she is definitely uncomfortable with. Piangi seems dedicated to Carlotta, so this would be out of character for him. So she runs, because even if it is Piangi, he isn't meant to or allowed to do this. She gathers her courage and goes back to him, pretending she didn't just run away during what's meant to be an intimate scene, but she feels the mask under the cloak. When she tries to run the second time it's too late. It's just brilliant how much is expressed without speech.
@hasandilber9451 Жыл бұрын
also the fact she feels his face and it is a mask underneath the cloak that is also why she runs

How does it feel to completely alter the way I interpret this scene with a KZbin comment? It always kinda confused me why she would run away halfway through, but then return if she hadn't figured out it's Erik yet. This makes SO much sense!!

@galacticjewels78563 жыл бұрын
The acting in this scene is fucking incredible. Sierra’s seductive play that slowly turns to fear upon realizing who is under the cloak, Ramin’s shaking hands as he reaches for Christine’s, it beautifully captured the phantom’s desperate longing for Christine and his reaction to her touching him like that. Also the way the phantom occasionally slips out of the fake accent during more intense lyrics of the song. Just all the little details are amazing. I honestly wish the movie had adapted the scene more like it was here.
@amayajones683 жыл бұрын
I never knew that or thought of that. I think that’s why it kinda makes sense that the Phantom would go into “All I Ask of You” after “The Point of No Return”.

I know this Phantom of the Opera is not by the book, it is adapted, so I don't know the history of this Eric, but watching this scene it made me think. If you go trough whole play, Eric actually imitates people. He sings to Christine what he wrote in his opera, which is inspired by the book he has read. In this instance he confesses his love the same way he saw Raoul did it. It is like he doesn't know how to interact with people, so he imitates what he has seen or read in books. Maybe because he spent his whole life watching people interact in operas, he is so dramatic, obsessive, why he is easy to kill people, taunt them, control them. He doesn't know any better. Part of his life he was treated badly, and the rest he tried to learn about people trough exaggerated operas. The moment he experienced something different, when Christine showed mercy and love to him, showed forgiveness, he let her and Raoul go, imitating what he learned.

I think that her suspicions came when he did things that weren’t blocked in the opera. Loving the fact that "the bridge is crossed so stand and watch it burn" apply differently and mean different things to both of them. Erik is telling her she's lost the chance at freedom, so sever all of your relationships with everyone else while Christine is telling him he has crossed the line with his actions and they can never get back to the friendly relationship they had ever again. To the characters, Erik has passed the point of salvation (at this moment). He, up to this scene, is irredeemable because he has done far too many awful things. To Christine, her decision to betray Erik, the phantom, her mentor, (possibly) her romantic interest and her father figure means she is now a transformed person. She has grown from a naive girl into an adult. She has crossed the line and there will be no more relationship with Erik after this, but it marks her growth into a mature woman. They've both passed the point of no return.

That's only your personal interpretation and the meaning to this line is most definitely not like that but okay. Remember, this line is supposed to be part of an opera, Christine is purely acting, she's not aware of what this line means, looking at her face when she sings this line, she seems to be paying more attention to who the man inside the cloak is more than what the lyric actually means. The lyrics's context here mostly only apply to the situation in Don Juan Triumphant, and "the bridge is crossed so stand and watch it burn" means more like "we've had sex and our affair begins and we can't go back now" in the context of the opera they're acting in. It could also mean that after everything that happens Erik and Christine's life will forever be changed and they can not go back, but I definitely don't see this as her telling him to fuck off and that she will cut all relationship with him. You're probably a Raoulstine shipper I guess.
@hsiaying31614 жыл бұрын
@GeorgeWashingmachine (this message is replying to the comment you deleted previously) 1) as you have said, it's an interpretation and an opinion, and I dont think a literary analysis can be considered "wrong" unless I have severely misinterpreted the scene and stated points with little to no or very weak evidence. 2) Christine most DEFINITELY knows it's Erik, because it has been established that he will appear, and not to mention, she literally felt his mask under the cloak and took off which led to him grabbing her wrist and dragging her back to him. All other portrayals by other actors have done the exact same. Elizabeth Southard's version even explicitly felt his face and faltered before running away. 3) I think it's a bit weak of an argument to say that since they're "acting" they cant mean what theyre saying. If you say it's wrong to say that Christine IS seduced by Erik during this song then you are most likely correct. However, my analysis was based on that one line and how it perfectly encapsulates the Buildungsroman genre (Christine's growth into a mature woman). Would you care to elaborate on why you said I was wrong? I'm fine if you disagree, but I would like to know why I was "wrong"

4:00 I hate how underrated is this scene, and those people that hate Christine don't even realise what she was trying to do: she literally screamed "TURN" and Erik realized what she was trying to say, he turned (before whisping _"turn"_ as he realizes) and saw Raoul almost shooting him. He knew he was going to die, so before that, he asked Christine if she would love him, and here is the moment where she remove his mask to make him mad enough to run away. She was trying to *SAVE HIM* and not humiliate him. Sure, she didn't know Erik would take her _with_ him, but still. Christine was afraid and upset for Erik's toxic behaviour, but she STILL loved him and cared for him. Both antiChristines and antiEriks are equally wrong.

That’s how I always interpreted this moment, first Christine did not want to be the bait to catch the Phantom in the first place, Raoul guilt tripped her into it, and as scared of the Phantoms violent behavior as she was, he was still her Angel, and she knew their were about a dozen guns pointed at him. Taking off his mask was her attempt to get him to snap out of it and save himself, of course she didn’t expect him to take her with him.

Ironically how the Phantom sings reprise of "All I ask of you" after he's killed someone. The first time, Buquet. The second time, Piangi. Srsly, the 25th aniversary version is just... CHEF'S KISS. The little details you can notice in the acting, the tension and the music is completely fantastic. I don't know how many times I had watched this performance. I just love the slowly way she recognizes she's singing with Erik and how caught off guard he is just by the touch of her, leans on her a little and tries to see her through the cloak while she is singing, pure longing. One of the few times Christine is actually in "charge" of the situation. He misses the touch of her when she finally knew he's the Phantom and not Pianggi, I think by feeling the mask under the cloak. Kinda sad because in this moment he went "past the point of no return", doing cruel things to win her and she can see it. Singing "all i ask of you" is like the last and a desperate attempt, seeking salvation in her. Everytime I watch this I could catch more details, but the point is that Ramin and Sierra did a powerful and amazing performance. The chemistry is incomparable. One of the best Phantom and Christine, if not the best. PS: sadly I watched this performance before the movie, I didn't like it that much because I had this bar set asdgshg. But the customes and ambientation were beautiful there.

It's hard to find a performer to get in that zone with but these two come off so naturally.

What I love most about this scene is the character evolution of Christine. Up until this point, Christine has expressed fear about the idea of the Phantom, but that has always been tempered by her awe and admiration of him and has never felt fear in his presence. She obviously knew that "Don Juan" was the Phantom but was supremely confident in her ability to thwart him by throwing his hood up at 3:58 . The moment the Phantom began to sing at 4:18, she realized that she had grievously underestimated the Phantom. She could see how quickly he adapted and how he preferred to flaunt his proposal. That was the only moment when Christine felt nothing but fear of the Phantom. What did she do, though? She made the choice to have the Phantom's joy turn to ash by shattering his mystique in front of the very audience that he had seconds before been feeding off of while gloating about his plan's apparent success. That takes strengths and smarts. She evolved from a token ingenue into a multilayered character practically instantly. What a great scene!
