That's oversimplifying. There's also the reveal to Raoul that the Phantom is the father of his boy and of course the bet which is kind of the main plot point of Love Never Dies. So while there is certainly potential wasted in this song, it at least moves the plot along.

I prefer Ramin and Sierra as lead roles but here... Ben Lewis... Uh, I can't get enough of his deep and powerful voice. >w< And also his portrayal of Erik is very on point, also I think that he's acting choices were inspired by Lon Chaney's Phantom, his mimics and little manierysms. That's just great!
@BookRose-rk1rv6 ай бұрын
@@gaburysuje6766 YES! Their is something very old school Universal Monster Dracula/Nosferatu etc about Ben’s portrayal right down to his ‘crazy eyes’ LOL I get a lot of Lon Chaney/Boris Karloff vibes from him and I love it, I know some people have said Ben is a bit too ‘stiff’ but I feel that’s very deliberate on his part and it adds to his characters menace as you get a sense that that facade of control is very thin at the end of the day and their is a volcano just waiting to blow just underneath the surface…you really DON’T want to mess with this guy!

I think why this is my favorite duel from these two in this, is you can see just how far Raoul has fallen. Penniless. A gambler, and not a very good one. Drinks. Never bothers to understand that he HAS a family. A son who wants to talk to him, connect with him, and he ignores his uniqueness. And yells at Christine and blames everyone of the mistakes that HE caused. So why the Phantom plays the devil this this case, with: “Shall we two, make a bet?” Raoul was quick to jump on it, it made me upset that once he mentions Christine, “If she sings, you lose tonight. You leave from here disappear.” He was quick to ask: “Fine, but if she won’t IF I win?” Just the mention of his debts wiped away he didn’t even care about what SHE wanted. And you think he would learn from his mistakes in The Phantom of the Opera movie. As the song goes: “Say goodbye. As we dance with the devil tonight. Don’t you dare look at him in the eyes...” Raoul has fallen so low, Here’s the difference between Eric and Raoul after this song, no matter what Christine would have chosen Eric would still love her. Raoul just wanted to win. And the fact that Christine slept with him and now their son maybe Eric’s made he realize how he had lost more than he bet on. And that is something he couldn’t take losing.

Lyrics, with timestamps: 0:00 Raoul: Miss Giry! He's not Mephistopheles, you know. When it comes down to it, he's just another circus freak! I'm not afraid of him. 0:11 ... No... It can't be. Phantom: Not afraid of me, you say? R: Stay back, or I'll kill you, I promise you! P: Insolent boy. You think you own more of her soul than I? R: She is my _wife._ Your music may speak to her, but her heart will _always_ follow me. P: You think so? You _really_ think so? Follow _you?_ With all your... _charms?_ 0:43 P (singing): Look at you, deep in debt. Stinking drunk. Pitiful. Shall we two make a bet? Devil take the hindmost. 0:58 R (singing): Look at you, foul as _sin._ _Hideous._ Horrible. Call the stakes. Deal me in. Devil take the hindmost. P (R): Our Christine shall choose tonight (Let her choose!) Is she yours or mine? (Draw the line!) If she sings, you lose tonight. (I won't lose!) You leave from here. (Fine!) Disappear. (Fine!) R: And if she won't? If I win? P: All your debts - wiped away. R: Very well. Let's begin. Both: _Devil take the hindmost!_ 1:38 P (R): Our old game (You think you have the odds) It's been changed (You think you're in control) Every throw (You think you've fixed the dice) Riskier (Well, I will gladly roll) All the rules (I'll bet against the house) Rearranged (I'll even double down) Fate has redesigned most (Fortune's on my side) Cut the deck (I won her long ago) Let us play (I won her from you then) You and I (I beat you even now) Once again (I'll win her back again) In the end (And when the game is done!) Either way...! Both: _Devil take the hindmost!_ 2:05 Both: Now Christine shall choose at last. Is she yours or mine? R: We've a son, our bond's secure. 2:15 P (R): Are you sure? (Wut?) Are you so sure? (What do you mean...?) Such a child, strange to see... Talented... musical... Is he more you or me? Which one do you find most? (YOU LIE!) P (R): If you doubt... (No woman could) Doubt your wife... (or ever would) Doubt your son... (love such a man!) Everything... (You're insane!) Now we play for your life! (So now I play for my life!) Both: _Devil take the hindmost!_ 2:45 P (R): Deal the cards! (I call your bluff!) Let them fall (The game is on) Choose your hand (and we will see) Try your best (who wins out) He who wins (once and for all!) Both: Wins it all! _Devil take the hindmost!_ 3:01 Phantom (spoken): She walks, you leave together Pockets full, debts paid. She sings, you leave... _alone._ Devil take the hindmost. 3:20 Raoul (spoken): Dear God... What have I done? I could lose her forever! _MY CHRISTINE!_

Dear Erik ... too bad a kiss on his forehead from Christine was enough to kill him in the book. My heart tightened, he spoke with the Persian, he smiled and told him "She kissed me my friend, She kissed me !!" And it was a chaste kiss on the forehead… let alone a whole night together. A few weeks later, a single sentence was published in the obituary: ERIK IS DEAD. Poor soul destroyed by the lack of love in his life. A gesture of tenderness was enough to make him die of joy. When I saw the Shumacher show I smiled, I already knew how it would end but that didn't make me feel better in the end. Then my husband takes Love Never Dies home ... and I find that someone has figured out the rest. A Raoul totally disillusioned and aware of being a second choice, a bitter Christine who was with her husband, her childhood friend, towards whom, however, she had nothing more than a tender childhood affection. A child who ... from the very beginning it was understood that he could not be the son of the Count, the chanting and poignant notes like those of Erik .. and the mother who explains the true nature of love. Only regret: Meg Giry. Unfortunately she suffered terrible loneliness and paid the highest price. - However, this scene is wonderful, seeing Erik controlling himself and giving up using the snare indicates that he has matured a lot in those ten years. He has learned patience and now he wants to do things right.
