I did install a screen top for both 10 gallon and 30 gallon to keep out unwanted prey.I have them outside on my patio in the shade.

I only had 15 tadpoles. Some matured faster than others. Because I collect rain water for my garden and plants, I have 6/ 55 gallon drums in our front yard.. They are loaded with Tadpoles i did a video 2 years ago. Teaching my 12 year old granddaughter about Biology and the life cycle of a mature frog.. I had other children come and learn in my neighborhood.

Nice one there Greg. I've got a backyard "frog Pond" that I installed in shallow woods on the property. So far, 3 generations of the famed Wood Frog have been reared in it. They share the pond in development with another "star" of nature, the Spotted Salamander (mosquito wriggler eating machines!!) As you point out, their development is slower out in the elements. While there is plenty of algal growth in the pond for the tadpoles, I also toss in some ground up flake goldfish food that they also relish. It's an awesome sight seeing the tiny froglets leaving the pond to join nature's realm!!

This video I watched is from 2022,it is now 2024. I did put the tadpoles in a 10 gal aquarium , but gradually went to a 30 gallon. It gave the tadpoles room to move about .

The spawn I gathered has all hatched and within a week some of tadpoles are massive!, and some are half the size but all look healthy, the bigger ones look like there about the stage where there going to start getting there back legs as you can see them changing colour and there eyes are more froggy looking ,as well as spinach I also have been giving them bits of tinned tuna in spring water the last day, and they love it, its like watching red belly piranhas eating really fast, I call the bigger ones jaws.🤣🐸🐸🐸 IAM keeping my eye on them closely and will move the bigger ones into another tank when changing becomes clear, can't believe some have grown this quickly in a week.

Ha ha! Don't give them too much tuna, they're not supposed to eat any 'meaty' food until they get legs. To them it's a bit like chocolate cake is to us - it tastes great, but shouldn't eat too much of it. I've heard that certain foods can speed up growth, cat biscuits is one, as it contains a chemical the tadpoles use to make the hormone that makes them metamorphose. I don't know whether tuna has that in it or not, but maybe that could be the reason they are growing so fast. You will have some tadpoles that grow much faster than others, that's pretty normal.

Yeah, I only started giving them tuna yesterday so it's not that, I used bottled spring water at the beginning and there was a light cloudy growth round the tank, plants, gravel and I haven't seen them eating that much spinach, I wonder if it was the richness of the water and bacteria algae growth I've just looked at jaws again and it looks like his back legs are maybe starting to pop out...think iam going to need a bigger tank...🤣🐸.

I’m enjoying watching and learning. Looking to setup a tank for tadpoles soon. The light hanging over the tank worries me, it’s dangerous. Why not put a cover over the tank like I do for my reptiles? Thanks.

Are you worried about it falling in? I never really had an issue with that, it's pretty sturdy. But I do have a cover that I put on once the tadpoles start getting legs and think about leaving the water, just to stop them climbing out before I can transfer them to the terrarium.

Last year it took about 2 months to go from spawn to froglet. I collected spawn at the beginning of April and they emerged from the water at the beginning of June. Some take longer, so it was over the course of a a couple of weeks for them all to fully change.

It's very unlikely that any tadpoles will survive in a pond with fish in it, unfortunately. Fish are voracious predators of spawn.

Well, in this video I recommend spinach. But there are other things you can feed them. Romaine lettuce, cucumber, apple, fish flakes. Just remember, before they get back legs they eat plants. After they get back legs, they eat meat.

I must admit, I've not personally tried apple, but I imagine a little bit of softening would be good. Maybe experiment, try a bit of unboiled apple and see if they go for it.

Hello sir I have a heater in my betas tank could I put that in the teeny tiny tank I have for our tadpoles? Can they survive in unheated water? We have a TON of them in our pool so I just rescued a few bc my kids love them and in a few days once the pool chemicals are done again (every Tuesday I think,) the rest will probably die. I have carrot I can boil to feed them but money is tight right now. I don’t have any swamp water bc they were in our pool. I used regular water with stress coat to put them into instead of more toxic pool water . I hope h see this maybe Thankyou

Tadpoles don't need heated water, room temperature is fine. Feeding them shouldn't be too expensive, leafy greens is the best thing for them, but carrot will work too. Good luck with them, hope you can save as many as possible!

There was a bit of a cold snap recently that may have slowed down or put a temporary halt to spawning. Hopefully, it will pick up again as soon as we get a bit of warmer weather.

It's a judgement call really. I wouldn't do more than one partial change in a week as doing too many changes can stress the tadpoles. Sometimes I could easily go a couple of weeks without needing to change the water at all. It can depend on the size of your tank, the number of tadpoles and the quantity of plants in your tank.

@@GregsWildlife it’s 8/9 l, for only five toadpoles, some marsilea hirsuta and some hygrophila corymbosa. I think the water will remain pretty clean at least for a couple of weeks

Frog spawn will be laid / hatch out at a wide variety of temperatures. Generally speaking, it would need to be above freezing, I'm not sure about the upper limit. But you'll find that with warmer temperatures, the spawn will develop faster.

But I did find this online: Amphibian cloacal prolapse involves organs such as the bladder, intestines and uterus which may be seen protruding from the cloaca. Amplexus, the mating embrace that amphibians perform, can be a cause of prolapse due to the increased pressure applied to the body. Other possible causes of prolapse include nutritional deficiencies, gastrointestinal obstructions, parasites and pollutant exposure Small prolapses often spontaneously resolve and this process may be helped by keeping animals in water to prevent drying of the tissues. Large prolapses or ones which do not resolve may need veterinary attention.

I haven't checked, but I don't think so. I've been keeping an eye on Spawn Map on Twitter and watching as sightings are appearing across the country. There haven't been any sightings this far east as of yet. But it probably won't be long.

Great to hear you're giving it a go! I just checked Spawn Map and the furthest east they have had a report of looks to be somewhere around Ely, and one possibly in Ipswich. Definitely getting closer.

Yeah, newts wrap their eggs in leaves so are very difficult to see. Toads I think spawn a bit later than frogs and also prefer deeper water.
