I had an old cavalier. That 2.2 ecotec took all sorts of abuse, kept on going. The rest of the car just rusted around it and eventually it wasn't safe to drive. 250k miles and no major problems.

Well the rust that made it unsafe to drive would be a major problem.
@jimbobvlogz59772 жыл бұрын
@@liddlebopeep Think what he meant was in terms of drivetrain, the obvious stuff like transmission, engine, etc. I live in Canada and it’s unreal how many 10-15 year olds car roll into the shop completely rusted out and are scrapped when if they were Florida cars they could’ve had another 10-15 years of life.

@@LemmyKBrinkwood cobalt replaced the cavalier in 2006 I believe so it would be pre 2009 lol. Not entirely familiar on Chevy engines but the main killers of the cavaliers and similar chassis’s up here in Canada was rust. Almost everyone of them that were scrapped was due to rust, they seemed like reliable cars aside from that from what I’ve heard/seen myself.

I have a soft spot for these cars, they actually debuted in 1995, right around the time I was coming up to driving age. It had a quirky and fun coupe design and a price that was much more realistic to my after-school job, minimum-wage budget than say a Mustang GT of the time. I always liked the sloping hatch back style and the little winglet under the rear window, and the black center section between the tail lights, it was just...unique. I ended up in a Ford Escort ZX2, a similiarly styled and similarly sized coupe.

Nice, back in 2000 I bought the Cavalier with the same motor. 2.2 litre 5 speed manual. I lowered it, put nice wheels, intake, exhaust, fully functional 98 Camaro SS style ram air hood on it. It wasn't that fast but it was quick off the line, I could keep up with like 300 HP cars through second gear but that was it. I would have loved to turbo it but never had the money. That car was so fun, people would stare at it while I drove by all of the time. I think the fuel pump went out and my wife didn't want me to sink a bunch of money into fixing it because it had 200,000 miles on it. I put all but 24 miles on it myself, I had that thing all the way up to 2020. 1 month shy of 21 years! I loved that thing...

Only point of contention I’d have with this design is to borrow from the ‘94 Sunfire concept car, putting some smaller, blended mirrors at the top of the A pillars, and widening the rear quarter panels, making it more closely resemble an exotic sports coupe with a convertible option. The concept car had so much promise, and I remember seeing it in person at the Portland Int’l Auto Show. It hooked me instantly, especially with the poster showing it on a beach at sunset.

As a kid I always loved that the '90s Cavalier/Sunfire was a baby FWD Camaro/Firebird (styling wise). But as a adult I must say that if a Sunfire was reliable it has more to do with it being a very basic vehicle. The kinda bare-bones type of design that doesn't exist anymore. Building crude stuff like that is partly why old GM died in 2009.
