If you had the budget, What Engine would you swap into your 4x4?
Today on The Skid Factory, Al talks candidly about the Pros and Cons of a Cummins swap into a Nissan Patrol. There's a lot of variables to consider and it is a costly conversion.

Active noise cancellation might help knock down some of the engine noise. Pretty much put a mic near the driver's ears, feed that signal into an audio amp which drives a speaker, but swap the polarity of the wires going to the speaker. If that works a bit, you can make it fancier by gutting a pair of active noise cancelling headphones and using the output to the ear cup speakers to drive the audio amp & speaker.

We wish researchers and workers in the technology and engineering department to find plans for the new car industry Because new cars should be flying saucers in the sky and These flying saucers must have three perks 1 / The flying saucers must be self-driving so that everyone can use them 2 / The autonomous driving of flying saucers must be based on artificial intelligence programs 3/Artificial intelligence must rely on the new Google Maps in order to direct the launch of flying saucers to the desired places . Send these three basic demands to the technicians and engineers in the mechanics and technology department in order to make flying saucers

I don't know- have you seen what new cars cost these days? You can easily spend 45k€ on a VW Golf... a nice Audi sets you back 65k€...you can mess around with a project car a lot for that... sadly in my country project cars are very hard to get legal- and especially engine swaps are almost only done withing a model range

Nice to see honest opinions from someone about there own build. Its too easy to just pretend what you did is all spot on and perfect. 4JJ1 would be a good choice in the Diesel world but i reckon a Barra with around 380 RWKW would be tough to beat and the 25 odd grand of fuel you could buy with the savings would go a long way.

And quite rightly so! The vehicle was engineered for a given mass for a wide array of reasons. Brakes, suspension, chassis and so on could all be inadequate. Poor control of your towed loads can also be a real problem, leading, as you say, to your 87' van spilling its guts. As much as I am not a fond a large US pickup trucks, if people are going to tow 3500kg and heavier caravans around, they are likely a far better option.

Having done this conversion myself, but slightly different, I’d like to add my 2 cents. Obviously I didn’t do it quite the same as you but it’s definitely similar. I used a 12v 6bt through Texstar automotive. Originally all we were going to do was change all the gaskets, but thought since it was pulled down why not rebuild. Engine cost was $7200AU landed in Brisbane, rebuild was nearly 3k, but only reply once major parts that needed, and replacing all valves and stems. I always wanted a manual, and went with that to begin with, before going through 3 patrol gearboxes and shearing 3rd in all of them. I eventually went to a basic 4l80e, which was functional, but wasn’t what I wanted. Never played with the fuel pump too much, just went 4K gov springs and a fuel plate, but it just wasn’t to my liking drivability wise. Don’t get me wrong, could pull a house down but I’ve just never been an auto man. So I started looking down the path of manual. Ended up with a PaR gearset with custom 1-5 gears ( they have a shoo wheel of short or tall for every gear depending on your needs. They were originally designed for the Dubai 4.8’s with stupid power) and they have actually worked an actual treat! Thai set up also comes with a billet input and output shaft that is considerably bigger than factory to handle the extra load. Considering it only costs about 12k all fitted (including custom HD clutch to suit the shaft, it has honestly made the entire investment worthwhile! Taking out all the costs of doing things wrong, it can easily be done 45k on road with Abrams new motor and gearbox. I tow an OP4 camper as well and dragged that up little red just to be sure it could take me anywhere, and has no let me down. I have since done 8500k around Oz and wouldn’t change my set up for the world. Even with all my weight, fuel consumption is currently sitting at 13.5lph which is ridiculous for a car that size and weight! I personally believe that if I knew what I did now at the start I would’ve saved myself atleast 20k, but would recommend this conversion to literally anyone that will listen to me!

Davo, have to agree, the 5speed auto and 1hd-fte conversion in my 105 is smooth, quiet and gets it done .. I'm also Gu fan for the suspension geometry and diffs of course .. but like most of us, just want more than what came under the hood! For a second project, I'm on the lookout for a cheap S4 Patrol and I'll do the same again .. You get 24Valve, efficiency, high enough torque to tow whatever, no overheating and long term reliability. Front cut FTE for $12k and if it's done less than 500000k just send it, with a bigger set of injectors and turbo .. No rollin coal!

Ls3 factory cams suck and so do the heads for low end. Stick a btr torque cam (202 duration 111LSA) and ls1 style heads and manifold. Will have better torque around 2k rpm maybe as much as 40lbft. The Australian LS1 cam is even worse for low end. Best factory low end cams are L33 and Lq4. But the btr 202 cam is better then both. People forget that diesels don't rev past 5k. But everyone poops on these tiny LS cams even though the are good to over 5k rpm and most ppl go for something in the 22x and up duration. Unfortunately.

@@tcmx712 Have you ever driven something with a 4 speed that weights 3t plus? Even 2t plus unless you have bulk torque at 1200rpm like Al's it's gonna be doggy. Even with the correct gearing. Really, you are governed by gearing and in hilly burbs mine sits between 1k and 2.5k rpm stop start and up to speed. About 2.2k on the freeway in 4th probably similar to Al's. No idea what gearing to tyre ratio his is? Never said an LS won't do 5k plus. I have a 383 so torque is bit too big for 50kmph side streets at those kind of rpms. Also you can't just nip through the gears with 4 speeds not enough spread so you're always well over the speed limit. Sure mine is better now with the mods but still need more down low.

@@Dan-rg7jj dude op has a 6 speed and ls3 so why you waffling on about 4 speeds hahaha, and you do realise a standard ls3 has more torque at 2000rpm than a v8 70 series does anywhere in the rev range let alone anything that comes standard in a patrol so I don't know why you're saying it needs more torque down low when it moves the patrol a hell of alot better than stock???

I'm currently doing a TB45 to TD42 conversion and keeping the RE4 auto like you did with the red Patrol. Your videos have been an absolute wealth of knowledge and I really appreciate how much detail you go into. I am making it hard for myself by not manualising the auto like you did, but also keeping the ECU and TCM and not going the easy but expensive route of getting a kit from Wholesale Auto or wherever. Love your work guys, keep it up!

You will probably have 300ft/lb of torque at 1000rpm without the turbo spooling which is why they move on ok but a cummins with snappy response is much more fun and usable and worth sacrificing a few peak HP for. On my Cummins Landy the fuel economy was the same as the 2.5TDi it replaced but it didnt drop off when I was towing which was nice!

Had a good chat to my tuner about y61 engine choices. He’s dead against Barra conversions because they end being done too cheap. Ideally I would just go y62 with a Harrop and leave the y61, but for half the price a Cummins swap is very cool

Went nuts though! 130% injectors built pump big turbo. Already have the rest of the necessaties fitted to make it hum. Instead of rebuilding my block I was able to get a Genuine Toyota short block brand new in the packaging.
