So proud of my son Kye on here helping you guys out with the tune. I remember when he first had an opportunity to drive. My partner had an old Diahatsu SWB 4WD for paddock bashing and he was driving around the property with Kye in the passenger seat. Kye was about 9 years old and Johnny, my partner, asked Kye if he wanted to drive. Kye nodded excitedly. So, Johnny literally just stood up while the car was still in motion and left the driver's seat and stepped into the back seat and Kye had to grab the steering wheel, jump into the driver's seat and keep on driving. It was drive or crash!! Thankfully he drove!

I'd just like to add that learing how to operate the car like it's second nature is a very big part of being able to observe and deal with real world conditions. The less you think about the mechanics of driving and the more comfortable you get with the car, the more you can think about your surroundings and less likey you are to be overwhelmed (or worse) by adverse conditions or all the idiots on the road these days. Knowing your car is working as good or better than it came from the factory is big too... somehow I don't think Guss will have anything to wory about in that department :-)

Grandpa would scold us, but the next time we came over the truck was always out of the garage. The next year he let us have the keys to actually start and drive it around the farm. Same with his Ford tractor and Mott mower deck.

Great way to teach the Gromet. No oncoming traffic to worry about. First time driving a manual was on 19 mile beach in a MQ Patrol. Dad was in the passenger seat (we left Mum back at camp) and I drove the entire length. Ranger even pulled me up, gave my Dad a wink and asked for my licence. I shit myself and he laughed so hard the he was holding his side. Told me I was doing well and to just slow right down for traffic. Top bloke.

Excellent way to learn to drive and good teacher :) I learned in 1969 in my dads manual 6 cylinder, bench seat Vauxhall Velox with a column change, I did mange to “find” reverse, just the once while going forward , not that it went in , never again. My dad had the patience of a saint. Back then there was no Sunday trading so you would have supermarket car parks all to yourself for relatively risk free practice.

First experience with a manual? I had just got my beginner's permit and was helping my sister with some errands. We were out in my brother-in-law's '68 Barracuda 340S With thea 4 speed. She asked if I wanted to try it and I jumped at the chance. I stalled it on the first attempt to get rolling, but gave it "a bit more gas" on the second go. What a beast! I didn't light up the tires but it was making a lot of noise for sure. All the cars I've owned have been manuals and I wouldn't have anything else. Well done Gus. I don't have any real proof, but I think that driving a manual does make you a better driver. You have to think about what you are doing rather than just click it into D and start rolling. Cheers, and stay well!

Best way to learn how to drive a car is on a manual subie. Understeer, oversteer, throttle control for balancing it on the apex, scandi flicks and most importantly, no wheelspin, so if you don't master the clutch control, there is no wheelspin to save your launch :) Al had this planned all along :)

He's doing GREAT! I had to learn to drive a stick because my first car was a manual. A friend who could "drive" a stick took me to pick the car up, then did a terrible job coaching me on how to drive it. I figured most of it out by myself. Something people that have learned to drive a manual forget is how so much that becomes automatic with experience, like pushing the clutch in when coming to a stop, is really difficult to manage when you are learning because you have to think about everything that you are doing UNTIL some of those things become automatic.

Is still remember the first time driving a manual I didn't have my learners yet either (g1 in Ontario canada) but drove my mothers 99 corolla 3 blocks to the high school to do a tune up. She was a great teacher for me because she just let us go and learn and would explain if we asked for help. Eventually it got to the point where me and my 2 younger siblings would go practice winter driving techniques in the snow-covered empty parking lots. I'm now 30 and still drive a manual and am attempting to teach my wife and look forward to this moment with my son. For a youngster Grommet seems to have mastered the mechanics of driving a car, except that he has a habit of crossing his hands on the steering! You can't be too young to learn to drive, I was taught to drive by my father at 8 years old, driving our 15cwt Bedford CF van with 1 1/2ton on board (it had uprated suspension) on the local farm tracks. The gear change was 3 fwd on the column with no working synchromesh, double-declutching up and down through the gears, which taught considerable mechanical empathy especially with the extra weight. People still comment on how smooth I drive that I put down solely to those very early years. I also helped on various friends farms driving for example a 3 ton ex-WW2 Bedford that I hand to stand up to change gear with two hands! That truck also taught me to keep my thumbs to the outer face of the steering wheel otherwise the kickback on steering lock would seriously hurt if not break your thumbs!

Was lucky enough to grow up on a farm in NZ so learned to drive on a Fergie TEA, Austin A40 Ute and Mazda B1600. As soon as you could see over the dash (sitting on cushions!) you were going for it. Then leaned to drive on the road with an instructor in a MK2 Escort (basically learning the give-way rules, and unlearning a bunch of bad habits)

My dad had an auto, soo, i drove the car while on holidays down south in WA when i was 15 (On smaller roads). After that I learn't manual as soon as i got my L permit at 16/17. Because of the auto car, I learnt manual while sitting on a chair at home mimicking the feel of a manual car. When im not doing lessons. Everything from easing the clutch to feel the bite..etc. I used the Auto car for general rules and regs of driving. I passed my drivers test on the first try. It may be absurd the way i practiced Manual without a car, but it worked.

13 years old (20 years ago...) on my buddy's farm in his dad's '92 F250 7.3 PowerStroke manual. If you can believe it, I stalled the bastard!
