I had a short wheel base soft top G60 Nissan Patrol, put a 250 cross flow in it with a 5 speed gearbox. At 110kph, it was scary to drive, they bounce around, near impossible to hang onto, four wheel drum brakes, but I use the term "brakes" loosely, they would spit you off the road if you hit them too hard. Like he said, "its a wonky old jeep, it won't handle that horsepower that well". I can honestly say, he is dead right!! Had a lot of fun with it though....

At around 16:35 Al says the torque limiting strategy applies to "pretty much any engine". I wonder if he means it should be used on any tune, or if it's only for highly-strung engines, e.g, adding a turbo to a factory NA engine?
@Elxmo Жыл бұрын
I'd say it applies more to where you've made a pretty drastic change over stock torque, such as forced induction, not so much a Commodore with a cam or a Honda with a pod filter. Honda with a turbo, definitely have to limit that torque, they too have pencil rods... I know this from experience hahaha

Is the 1GZ-FE "fixed" with better rods or does it have a chain of weak links? Replacing rods +50 torque, but then the pistons needs replacing for +20 torque, but then headbolts, cams and bracing of the block for another +50? I find the engine amazing and the power it makes for the Landcruiser is probably more then plenty and with a really nice curve.
@13bttlotus Жыл бұрын
So rods fix a big problem. But the intake is restrictive and heads need flow, and pistons are worth upgrading when it’s open. Problem is with much more power and torque the gear bag and transfer and diffs and shafts become the next week links… where to stop is a hard question…
@darthvader8433 Жыл бұрын
Really interesting process to get the most out of the engine. And really smooth engine! Not sure I would have chosen it with the iron block 4.8 and 5.3lt LS motors going for almost free in the US... And they have huuuge potential with boost...

@drewski5730 Жыл бұрын
It’s kind of heresy given this is a Toyota. An almost free 1UZ, or 2JZ GE could have been bolted in as well. I think this has a V12 just for the sake of a V12. I’m sure with better rods and pistons this engine would have a higher ceiling.
@13bttlotus Жыл бұрын

Because I’ve seen the after photos one of these shorties roll backwards off a cliff/hill into a river/creek. Only reason it was not a fatality was the same brand of roll bar fitted in a soft top. (The bar got bent up but did it’s job…) If you have ever played with these they have a fibreglass roof and none of the upper panels are very structural…

@13bttlotus Жыл бұрын
It’s on the to do list for me. But like I posted in another comment, it’s ~+20k to do it right so it’s a while off. And to be honest even 300 hp in a shorty where the seated position puts your head about 6’ off the ground, it’s too much really for most occasions… Although I still maintain that everyone needs a +600hp fishing rig…

I know you guys delete distributor where you can, for good reason. But it would be cool to see you guys go through timing distributors for different fuels or just performance tuning in general. I've recently bought a couple of DA-DC LTD's with a Windsor and a 3.9. other than tuning it for standard timing, I don't know what to do with it 😅 the cars just aren't worth enough yet for me to justify modifying the ignition system

@benheynen2705 Жыл бұрын
Finally someone starts to realize why the OE do these things! I always was amazed at the comments of how "crap the factory tune was because the boost curve wasn't flat"! If you remove the rpm dependence with rod destruction the same rules apply with sticking to a gearbox or "program" torque target. Make the most torque for as many rpm as possible cos that's what makes the vehicle fast! Be careful using timing to control torque too much because retarded timing equals high EGT, better off and more efficient using boost. Why does no one (apart from all OE) tune to an EGT limit?..........😂 The reason engines take more boost and timing at high rpm is you are limited on ve and therefore effective compression. Also for the same torque at high rpm its from more cycles so less energy and force per cycle. Remember power is a derived unit.......
@woopimagpie Жыл бұрын
