Great video! Thanks for the tip! I'm almost two years deep into this saltwater fly fishing addiction and I've loving every minute of it. Could you do a video showing the before and after effects on the line? I'm just curious about how drastic the difference actually is. When I look down in my stripping bucket the loops are the same diameter as my reel early in the morning, but after fighting three or four nice reds my line tends to lay however it falls.

@Juliandell2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Pete, I usually pull 6ft off the reel, stretch that between my hands then pull another 6ft and do the same. Keep doing this until job is done. You can do this in a confined space including on the boat and you can also work on a small area of line that needs attention. 🎣
@TheSkiffWanderer2 жыл бұрын
Shoot I totally use that. Though I’ll use that method more when a line is showing signs of memory but only slightly

Great video Pete, Keep the tips coming ! If you're out on the water another way to straighten your line is to let the whole line out the back of the boat whilst you're on the move with something small tied to your fly line like a small popper lure or piece of cloth to add a small amount of tension to the line. Just remember when you're winding the line back on to the reel to not add too much tension. Another way I like to stretch fly lines is to lay them out on the lawn (out of direct sunlight) in the afternoon for a few hours, the afternoon heat makes the line supple which removes line memory.
@vicentegrez42572 жыл бұрын
Note that heat damages plasticisers on PVC fly lines, not so much on polyurethane fly lines tho, but it might start to crack sooner

For saltwater lines I usually do the second option with another person or tie off to a tree. If I don’t have a lot of room I’ll stretch the line out in increments of my wingspan which takes a lot longer but is ok in a pinch.

Good video, pete. What I do and works very well is one wingspan at a time, pull it apart till you feel it stretch, then move on to the next wingspan of line. I do it on cold mornings, as tropical line tends to kink up a bit in the cold.

Dope cap! I actually have an intermediate clear monic line that I’ll throw at spooky sheepshead. Stretching is something we all need to do more. That and cleaning your line. Thankfully in the south the heat gets the lines from being too springy for too long.

I always try to tie off and walk it out under the drag pressure I usually fish with and hold it under little more pressure as you suggested. The time I forgot to just had to tow it behind the boat, I was lucky to have a bibbed lure in the boat that I attached to give more pressure while driving the boat.

Using the rounded part of your side truck mirror method: hold leader end with one hand, fly rod/reel with 50% drag in other hand. Start with 6 feet of line out on both sides of mirror. Slowly walk back letting out another 6 feet, pause, pull back with both hands for a few seconds, then walk back again- letting out another 6 feet. repeat until backing is visible in the rod hand. Reel line back on in a uniform pattern and just tight enough to not have gaps. As a guide, this has been my parking lot prep before clients join me (and specific rod hasn’t been used in a while or I can visibly see line is out of wack).

On avg once a year. Although it honestly depends on how often the line gets used. If it needs to be changed, you’ll start to notice it doesn’t shoot as well as it once did and you may notice some wear spots in the line.

I typically just take a section of line that's just shorter than my wingspan and stretch it out across my chest. Repeat until you've stretched out however much line you can cast. The way I see it, I'd rather have the remainder of my line be a bit stretchy if I hook a fish that gets into backing.

I have stretched it multiple times but nothing seems to help. Its a Rio fly line so its not like its some no name brand. But at this point I think Im going to go to another brand and just see. Thoughts?
@TheSkiffWanderer Жыл бұрын
Are you using a warm weather line? How has the weather been? If it’s been really cold ( below 60) and the water temp is also cold, then warm weather fly lines tend to coil up. You might need a cold water line for the winter months.
@Thrandweel Жыл бұрын
@@TheSkiffWanderer I gave up on the line and got the airflo tactical 2.0. but yeah I'm in Florida it's hard for it to get colder than 60° lol it was just cheap line I guess. Never buying cheap line again.

Stretching plastic is not good for the molecular structures of the plastic , you breaking it over time. If you paying $100 for line it must as well work from the gecko. So that’s the reason I don’t buy expensive fly lines, ridiculous. So my solution I buy cheaper lines and welding together and when it comes to stretching well common sense plastic soft with heat right? so I use hair dryer and soft the plastic then I lay it down straight and use a wet towel to cool it a little then is straight. And if you are on the field I just use warm water with towel and lay straight down for few seconds but no need to stretch cause plastic damage.😅
