World Mental Health Day is celebrated on 10th October every year, but at The Smart Local, we wish to keep it a daily topic instead of something people mention once a year, or even shy away from.
In this special episode of Singaporeans Try, three TSL members tell their stories on camera for the first time to a professional therapist and discuss personal issues such as self-esteem, depression, anxiety, relationships and even suicide.
Through this video, we wish that anyone facing the same issues are able to find solace. Should the thought of visiting a therapist feel foreign, we also hope that this video will provide you a peek into what visiting a therapist feels like.
Special thanks to Belinda from The Lighthouse Counselling. For more on counselling, psychotherapy and life coaching, reach out on www.tlhcounsel....

This episode is different from any other Singaporeans Try video, but it is a topic many of us feel strongly about, and which is sorely underexposed in Singapore compared to in Western cultures. At the end of the day, our mental health is important because everything we do flows from it.

the thing is, some people have mental illnesses like me and we struggle. I struggle with agoraphobia which causes me to have panic attacks in certain situations. One example is crowded places and I cannot deal with it especially on public transport but nobody can see it so when i take the priority seat when in case I faint, I get confronted or asked to give my seat up and this whole thing makes people in these situations feel like their issues are invalid. Other times, I just can't even stand because of my panic attacks and that goes on for a while before people even give their seats up. mental health is important but at the same time we also need to break the stigma on mental illness. Something I've been searching up is service dogs for psychiatric issues. The funny thing is singapore doesn't have those even though there are most probably more people diagnosed with mental illnesses that could benefit from them as compared to the number of blind people in singapore

Well this videos gives me anxiety. Talking about mental health always gives me anxiety. I had to stop watching just after 2 minutes to prevent myself from getting into a downward spiral. Eventhough its not everyday we feel depressed it feels like an eternity when a mental breakdown or anxiety attack happens... But good video to raise awareness i just cant bare to feel down. It hurts

@@valarie1238 For mental health, we call them therapy dogs, they exist in Singapore, there are a few private therapists that uses an animal for therapy, and every week there is a welfare group there brings well trained pets to IMH and other homes to use as them as therapy dogs. And most of the time, any dogs or animals can be tame and use as personal therapy pets, you just need to train them yourself and build a close bond with them. Most of the time, adopted animals are more ideal as the key is the animal chooses the owner, as it there when it knows you need it, plus most of have their own life experience. But, still....even in the states therapy dogs are not allowed in public transport.

@@0rochimarusama people only fake it because they don't want to burden others or they don't wanna show that they're sad. it's a fact that people who look the happiest might not always be truly happy. even if you think that showing whatever emotion is easy, you think that just displaying what you want to is easy. its not. People are afraid of the reaction about what people think about them it's a fear they have unknowingly no matter how hard they try to push away the thoughts stop caring it isn't as easy as you think. maybe you're able to have enough confidence to live your life to the fullest, not hide anything, any emotion. but others are different. the thoughts that people with these problems have are extremely toxic and sometimes it'll reach to the point where they take their lives. maybe it's feeling like they're alone in a situation that makes them feel like that. that's why, people say, before you comment anything think about the context of the comment.

@@0rochimarusama I don't really want to reply to any of your following comments. But really, you're going waayyy too far. It's because of insensitive people like you that led to people having such thoughts. So keep your negativity away. This video is about helping others cope with their issues, letting people know they aren't the only ones dealing with the same problem, letting them know it's ok to seek a professional for help. Everyone have different personality, you like to share your problems with others? Good for you. But don't expect others to be like you. Instead of talking shit as if you know them, help them out, give them solutions instead of hurling profanities, saying they are fake or what so ever not.

@@peanutzz2662 actually, everyone just have different body sizes. No one should be called fat or super skinny or tall or short. It shouldn’t define who we are. I look at myself in the mirror all the time and see so much fats in the place I don’t want to have, I call myself fat. But to other people’s eyes, I’m skinny, my ribs can be seen at times and so on. So, it’s your way you look at yourself that defines who you are as a person. If you hate your body and all, you let people talk bad about your body. *Thank you Jes, for opening up💜* I hope Jes will have more confidence in what she does. I hope that the judgemental will not get to her. Never ever let others pull you down just because they feel that what they perceive is always right. LGBT is nothing to be shameful of, it's who we are. Those who tries to "correct" us thinks that they are helping us for a better future, but they failed to see that we are just like them, flesh and blood. Who says that male and female are a pair, who to say that it's the law? Every living being has the rights to find their trueself, only those who selfishly destory one's way of living for the sake of face in this society, are the ones that truely breaks the Will of God. Jes, you're an amazing person, thank you for letting us know how you feel. I can't be of much help to you but I just want you to know that there will always be someone who will be by your side, be it your real life friends or internet fans. Thank you for staying true to yourself, please have more faith in yourself. I know you feel lonely trying to find your way out of this dark tunnel, but we, the figures connected by Wifi, Internet, techonologies, will always be by your side. *I hope that you will see the light at the end of this tunnel one day💜*

Really appreciate yall making this video, TSL. Mental health shouldn't be a taboo topic, and like Zhin said, going for therapy shows that someone is actively trying to improve themselves and get out of their rut, like how we go to the doctor when we have a flu. Just because we don't see the problem (like a broken bone or a cut) doesn't mean it's not real. Society needs to do away with the stigma related to therapy and start regarding mental health as a legitimate issue.

I feel that the one that is difficult to step out of the zone will be Jeslene. Although I think it is possible that at the start, actually both have different views towards bisexuality, or rather not as much as what she seems to have thought of. But this constant factor was being pushed aside, especially when that moment of time where you feel that this person can relate to you and understand you more than any other person you have met. That kind of attraction will be something that almost everyone have difficulty to resist on. So after that you will self-resolute towards having the moment of period where both of you had been together, and wished you had; that you turn into your inner insecurities. That you shelled yourself out from the rest. So for this kind of person is that their first courage to really step out and get hold of yourself and find back your own identity. This process itself is already a hard step for them to move on. While Zhin's case was actually easier, as I think it's a common pressing issue in this current generation. That people just want to see the good stuffs, the best side of them to the world. That people starts to live in this kind of facade of themselves, that they have lost their own identity. That they questioned themselves, "Do they really know who I am?", "You won't understand even if I have explained it." kind of situations. You will start to think more than usual, scenarios comes up to you more often. Additional thinking of 'what if', are just toxic to the mental health. It's a vicious cycle, of self doubt and questioning events might not even happen at all. Good that you have taken the attempt of digital detox. This kind of people you have to just talk to them more, and share their same level of understanding, and show them the other side of the scenario of what would have been. They will eventually be enlightened and slowly correct themselves. It's okay to at times get lost, to self-resolute, to be vulnerable of yourself. Being a man doesn't have to put on a strong front, even though of social stigma that men should maintain their masculinity. Being weak is being true to yourself as well. Renae's case is also easier, work stress is also another common issue here in Singapore. It has become a pattern here in Singapore, more often than not now you're working on a social media industry. Judgemental comments of various opinions will definitely come out. As much as Millennial tries to open to the kind of freedom of speech. Opening a mail before you're preparing to go for bed is like opening a Pandora Box. The kind of attraction to know what they are going to say, will give you that urge to want and be curious. So down here, is more about discipline and really keep reminding yourself that sometimes things are just voices, but not a reflection of what you should be and must be. However this reminding issue can also sometimes backfire, as you start to blame yourself for being harsh on yourself again. Just have to be more ease, and cool about it will do. You do you.

I want to see a part 2 for this topic where maybe the therapist can give tips to us that have friends facing the same issues. Most of the time, friends having such mental stresses would be shy or in denial of their mental issues and having us telling them to meet a therapist would just make us look like the "bad guy" or being "ignorant" in their eyes, pushing us further away from them.

You’re not alone and I know this doesn’t mean anything and wouldn’t mean anything when you read it. But just know that you’re not alone and as strangers, me and the other two commenter above bother to comment means we really care even though we do not know you. I know how you feel, I have the same thought as you.

Nicole Liang hey it’s perfectly normal, there are many people thinking the same too. But there’s one difference between you and the people who have taken their lives: you still have another chance of making a change in your life and see it turn out differently. Haven’t you wondered how it could have turn out differently? Once you have passed through this stage (albeit a very hard stage) of life, everything will be so much easier, your perspective of life will be so much different, victory would taste so much sweeter too! Don’t give up NICOLE LIANG! You can do it! I am trying my best too!

Been contemplating going for therapy for a long while, but didn't know what to expect and how it can actually help. Watching this clarifies many doubts of mine and makes me feel more comfortable going into therapy. Thankful to the team for creating this and grateful to Jes, Zhin and Renae for sharing their stories. It must have taken lots of courage and strength on their part.

Thank you Jes,Zhin,Renae for being so open and honest about what y'all been going through. I'm reading this book by Ellen Hendriksen "How To Be Yourself" and thought might be useful to share as it opens up my mind to understand myself better. I feel that through reading, it gives us the reassurance and the peace that we need. Let's continue to be brave, being our authentic self.

This is very relatable, for those of you who say don't try to fake your smile for anybody else well is not that simple because society is judgemental as hell. We fake our smile is to be approachable and professional.

sending all the love, support and genuine care to you three! thank you for sharing your stories and allowing us to relate, everyone has a deep dark fear and side, and to reveal it to the world is surely not easy. but it has helped so so many people take comfort in knowing there are people who struggle out there, and will definitely inspire more to step out and begin a recovery process. stay strong and be unapologetically you!! humans are not perfect, don’t ever feel the need to subject your entire existence to a single person/minority’s passing comment, and know there’s a whole community willing to support you. and for everyone struggling out there, this is a battle we all face, and will all get through, things may look bleak now, but i hope everyone finds the bravery to make the “first step” mentioned.

I regret giving a second chance to people. It bit me back real hard. I never look at friendship the same hell even I forget the definition of what a friendship is. Now the relationship I have with people are purely just work. Nothing more.

Thank you TSL, Jes, Zhin, Renae for sharing about mental health. It's topic that resonates within so many, yet it is still a taboo one. Hoping that people will learn to be more understanding towards each other. When you are about to drown, seek help, you are not alone.

its so nice to see the three of them coming out to everyone, i wish i could do that too. but i dont know whats the real cause, it started too long ago and problems build up as well as left unsolved. theres just too many things in my head and its still adding on.. sometimes i just want to have a good scream but i cant, i cant. i feel like i just couldnt relief myself because i dont have the power within. its really frustrating how i can be fine on somedays and irritated, sensitive, depressed on other days. it sucks so bad because im dealing with everything all by myself. it would be nice to have friends and family giving me support but i couldnt come out to them, not a single one. they dont and they wont understand and my friends? im scared, im scared that they would judge me even if they dont show it and my friendships would drift like how it happened before. things are so hard

Extremely late to this video, but I just wanted to say that I could really relate to everything Zhin said even though we're very different people. it's hard to build trust when you've been hurt in the past and perhaps those feelings will haunt us for as long as we live, I can only hope he is in a much better place now where those intrusive thoughts no longer have a place in his life. Let's do our best

I know how Zhin feels. Whenever someone ask how i feel or how am i doing, I just smiled and say yes im fine. But when they truly asked and probe further, that's when i became a human fountain. A part of me have hide so much pain that once someone starts to seep in my darkness slowly, i cannot stop crying 😢 I think a whole lot lot and to avoid those train of thoughts, i kept myself busy day by day, avoiding thinking of the problems. I always tell myself that i have to keep on swimming if not i will drown. Drowning in my problems. Belinda has such a soothing, unjudemental vibe that i like. Been counselling once and the person i shared to wasn't so 'comforting'. All she does was questioning my doubt and never try to understand what i try to reach out to her.. I guess that's why i stopped seeking help.

Hey, I hope you are doing okay and hope you find people you can trust and can open up. I don't know what you are going through but I hope you are able to overcome your pain and find joy in your life. And whenever you go to a councillor again that you are able to find someone who you feel suits you and understands you and is comforting. :)

sometimes is not hard to tell others that you are mentally unwell. But it's hard to say it in a way without making the other person feeling alien by you. And walk away and avoid you whenever they see you. Even those working within the mental health and social service is the same when someone close to them tells them that they are mentally unwell.
