I never got to see The Smiths live but this was the fist Smiths song I heard Morrissey perform. I'm not sure what it's about, but songs open to multiple interpretations are often the best. Whatever it's about it contains the wonderfully poetic line "I tried living in the real world instead of a shell, but...I was bored before I even began." For that line alone it is a classic.
