It’s not cheap but I think priced reasonably for what you get and the limited competition in the states. The non AMG E class wagon, while bigger, is the only true competition and it’s a lot more $ when equipped similarly and now moot since MB isn’t importing it anymore instead focusing on the butched up and uglier (IMO) allroad thing. Hi. Regarding the paddle-shifts and the ability to «stick» in manual mode, you actually have to engage manual mode (first) by using the regular shifter. (It will however downshift for you if the speed gets to low or if you use kickdown) When changing gear with either the up/down-paddle on the steering wheel, it always drops back to automatic mode after roughly 5-10 seconds. I guess Volvo asumes that this is only temporary down/up-shifts. I have had this car for a couple of months now, and was also curious on how this worked, until I saw a pattern. Great review btw 😃👏🏼

The supercharger screeching up to 3000 and then the turbo taking over and all the other mechanical sounds and then the bark at 5000 revs when in sport mode really makes you feel connected. You and your wife have good taste in cars! I also have a Volvo V60 R-Design wagon with the Polestar tune. I’ve had it for just about 4 years, and I pretty-much love it, especially after switching over to Continental Extreme Contact DWS06 Plus tires on ultralight BBS wheels that saved me about 25-27 lbs of unsprung weight on each corner. The only serious complaint that I have regarding this 2017 V60 T6 R-Design wagon is that the in-car electronics and controls are atrocious! They are not only antiquated - they were primitive even when I bought the car - they also have far too many “bugs” in them, particularly in the infotainment system/navigation, etc. Once I get past these electronics gremlins, the actual driving experience is superb - great handling, good-enough speed and overall performance. It’s so much fun to drive this car that I intentionally stayed off of interstates as much as possible and found the most-twisty mountain roads possible while on vacation last month. On our trip home, I found a really superb mountain road (NY State Route 26 South) through Central NY for a near-100 mile stretch, which absolutely made my day. I also stayed off the Interstates as I drove back into my home state of PA and took a bit longer route on another nice, but not great, state road (PA Route 412) to get some more opportunities for driving the car in sport mode and using the paddle shifters. I’d probably be a customer for this new Polestar Engineered V60-T8, except that I plan on keeping my current V60 until major things break on it (in spite of the electronics “gremlins”). Based on my past experiences with several Volvos, I hope that this will be many years in the future!

I driven all of these cars, the XC70, the 2015 V60 the 2020 V90 and have the old version of this car, the 2011 XC70 T6 Premier and also have a 2011 XC70 with base 3.2L engine and FWD. what I will say is I prefer the power delivery that the real T6 engine gives you. I have the Asin TF80SC gearbox (both great gearbox and a very meh one) as well on both of my XC70’s I have to say the gearbox isn’t a big issue for me when I’m hammering back roads and the track as long as I’m not spinning my gearbox too hard it lets me do it and by too hard I mean like I can’t sit on red line.. there is also the issue I encountered mostly on my 3.2L so maybe issue of torque where if I start to launch in 3rd gear from rolling start like 30 or 50 mph rolling start race it’s likely to kick back to 2nd or first then jump back to 3rd gear on its own after gets things spun up, it does do this on T6 as well but less often makes me thing it’s down to torque. Which is faster? Obviously the 3.0L T6 but surprisingly the NA 3.2L isn’t that far off with this gear box. I found 3.2L really running out of headroom after around 110MPH and really slow climb beyond that and T6 runs around same point but still climbing little bit faster thanks to having more torque. Top speed I managed in 3.2L was 131 MPH (speed limit removed) and T6 was 147 MPH (speed limit or removed) The AWD systems on old ones I do think is superior to the new ones for “off-roading” but for handling and thrashing on the road I think the new systems are superior. That being said on old systems even up to 2015 V60 you can disable DSTC entirely, so traction control is disabled and stability control still there but very relaxed and enjoyable.. with Volvo’s AWD Haldex system and DSTC disables you can kick the rear end out a lot in the snow, gravel, dirt and in the wet and cuz stability control is still there and relaxed a lot it actually harder to spin out but easy to control the slides and ass slipping.. we got one snow storm here this year and I played with both my XC70s and disabled traction control and it was so much fun slide around and unlike normal where if you kick rear out and AWD the front is trying to fight to bring it back this wasn’t and it felt very planted too didn’t feel floaty like does when trying sliding out of control. But as I said before I agree on road or on a track even the new AWD system remains Superior, specially in wet twisties.. the old system would react but didn’t know what it was fighting. Example was a slick wet patch on a corner I ripped threw and my haldex based AWD reacted very quickly too it like within fraction of a second but by that time I was already out of the slip so it was pushing me around before relaxing again. New system with hybrid system being infinitely variable is way better as it’s always working when in sportier modes like dynamic and polestar modes. So it when it steps in it steps in much sooner and it sends much more appropriate amount of power to the rear wheels to help out, my only complaint is Volvo doesn’t have a slip start mode or a mode that allows little more wheel slip before Traction system gets unhappy. And turning DSTC off doesn’t fix it like it used to either... new DSTC system doesn’t allow you to have as much fun. Handling wise, ya the new cars handle better, but they are all boats though.. the new suspension setup though does make it better if you know how to adjust it and don’t mind tougher road so u can corner more level. The rear of new cars is very stiff as it is but well isolated still so not intrusive so just stiffening front up can help. The older cars Do not get 4C chassis/suspension it sounds good and all but actually not as good as just getting proper suspension, I recommend for XC70 getting Bilstien B4 touring struts (stiffer than factory but still soft enough that not jaring) and trying those out with factory springs first and if you need more stiffness few springs that shared between land rover and Volvo that you can use I beleive and much stiffer and great for racing but to me a bit jarring for the road. In summery the new cars are better in almost every way and I would buy one and have seriously considered between V60 2020 and a V90 2020 but have decided that for me personally as someone who is a backroad thrasher as well as someone who wants isolating luxury that new ones aren’t that huge of an upgrade for me personally.. ya I want the styling and infotainment and all gadgets and stuff I’m a nerd like that but I’m happy with the bigger engines and older AWD and traction control systems. And while both of my wagons are very high milers neither of them are showing any signs of wanting to slow down.

Had a V60 Polestar (last gen). The ride was punishing. Those adjustable shocks give you the option of stiff & firm or stiff & bouncy. Too bad because everything else about the Volvo V60 was great.
@michaelpigue52724 жыл бұрын
Christopher Bell the new polestar engineered cars are much more compliant. I have only driven one in a moderate setting but it was perfectly comfortable. These new ones are not quite so ‘race car’ like the previous gen cars were. But boy do I miss the polestar blue...

Should've been an i5 driving the rear wheels with electric motors in the front.
@johnvetromile42734 жыл бұрын
JTKirk explain to me how they would possibly package that within this front engine layout? A combustion engine and two electric motors beneath the hood of a compact wagon? Also there would be much more drivetrain loss if they engineered the drivetrain to send power from front to rear.

@@vomErsten What I would try if I would be at Volvo. Make Engine much smaller and more economical. Increase battery size and electric power a lot. Like 150hp gas engine + 300hp electric power and 30kwh battery. Keep current layout (gas at front and electric back) Normal driving could be done with electric motors, which is nice and gas engine could be used for max power mode and also as range extender. Not sure if that kind of setup would make economical sense, but would be excellent for my use. Keep utilizing central tunnel for battery and probably some of the floor area. Make car 100mm wider to accommodate bigger battery to the center of a car.

I wonder if BMW will start using a hybrid xdrive system in the next gen of M cars? This thing is dope and I'd totally have one for a daily commute. The brakes and the ohlins seem kind of overkill for what it is though, honestly I'd take the mid level powertrain with the polestar appearance. I don't think it has much competition, I guess the new A6 allroad or E400 wagon which would come in higher once you start tacking options onto them
@jareknowak87124 жыл бұрын

I've had 2 Volvos and loved both of em. I really want to love the new ones, but from your comments and the under laying meanings I think you're implying, perhaps unconciously, you're not SO impressed. IMHO Volvo has a customer base that they're hanging on to. In order to get sporty drivers on board, they really need to get some of their models lighter, purer and more analog, like MT 6speed, less opulent, and organic. Too bad Lotus doesn't make a wagon.
@vomErsten4 жыл бұрын
I agree, but Volvo won't. They are instead going the opposite direction entirely by placing 112 mph speed limiters (even on the Polestar Engineered cars), consciously tuning their transmissions to be smooth at the expense of response, etc. They want to woo those of us in Audis or BMWs and they are 75% of the way there with the amazing presentation and excellent comfort, but the mixed signals about whether they are willing to be sporty and iffy execution of the powertrains is just not sealing the deal. I want a Volvo S60 for its style and comfort, but I want it with the crisp drive of an Audi S4.
