Matt attends the Motor Press Guild's annual track day, where he gets to drive a wide variety of cars at Willow Springs. To Celebrate passing 300,000 KZbin Subscribers, we're uploading 11 videos in 11 days!
Today, we're driving the MKVII Volkswagen GTI! It's bigger, faster, and more luxurious than ever before, but is it the best GTI on track?

I'm not sure what the reviewer means when he says the motor "lacks character". Most everyone else has applauded it for its flexibility and smoothness. The exhaust and in-cabin sound is great as well, in my opinion. I think the optional $1,500 Performance Package is almost a must-have with this car, and would have addressed the small braking and handling issues the reviewer had. With the Performance Package you get an extra 10-hp, a locking, electronically-controlled limited-slip differential, and larger brakes. The fronts go from 12.3" to 13.4", and the rears from 10.7" to 12.2". I think the price is a steal for the upgrades you get. You can also get the Dynamic Chassis Control Package that provides adaptive damping, but only on the SE and Autobahn trims. It costs $800. That's a lot of performance upgrades for only $2300. VW deserves a lot of credit for keeping the pricing low for these goodies.

There is a reason why the Golf is always the hatchback that every other hatchback gets compared to. They have pretty much set the standard since the early 90's. Matt's use of the word "planted" is spot on. I wouldn't buy a Golf myself (except for a Mark I/II with a swapped VR6 engine, or a Golf R32) They are a bit too common for me, and I like to be a little unique snowflake. And the 2.0T engine has great aftermarket support.

Sounds like a good review! This is top of my list for next car, and I've had extended test drives in several. I've owned a '04 1.8T for over ten years and done several track days with it (and accumulated some chassis mods over the years too). GTIs are never about wowing you on first impression or even in a week, which is why I think they get under-reviewed by press people, but when you have one for years and you realize that it has never ever disappointed because it does everything you want from a car at least pretty well, then you go WOW. And it's a big wow. Because it is comfortable, and quiet, and efficient, and spacious, and practical, and fun, and reasonably track-capable, and reasonably affordable, all in one package. There are cars that can do better in a couple arenas but in all arenas? Not really, no. I still want to try a Fiesta ST but have to say in comparison to the Focus ST, the MkVII has better steering, it has a better seating position and pedal layout, it has a nicer feeling interior with more intuitive controls, it has a better trunk, it has less road noise, it gets better mileage, it has better visibility, and while they both have good shifters, the MkVII isn't buried in this weird well between the armrest and dashboard where you're hitting your hand on all the other pieces of interior trim when you try to shift like the Focus! Even the GTI's seats are amazing and compete strongly with the Ford's optional Recaros, and blow the standard chairs out of the water. Yeah the Focus ST probably has that 10% more starch in its suspension, it is a really great suspension, and yeah the Focus has a bit more grunt and a little more character in its engine note, but overall, the Focus ST is less than the sum of its parts and the GTI is more than the sum of its parts. Glad to see a track review of the non-performance package. You made a comment about the brakes being slightly overwhelmed on this track, which would be one of the biggest reasons to get the performance package, but otherwise it's good to see that a standard GTI can do some hot laps without falling over itself. As for the long gearing, I'm really happy with how they geared this GTI. In my 5 speed, 1st goes to 40 MPH, 2nd goes to 70, 3rd goes to 100, 4th goes to 125, and 5th nets you 2900 RPM at 70 MPH. It works great with the torque bands of these motors but needs a 6th gear for cruising. Well, for years, VW has been offering 6 speeds where the highway revs in 6th were still too high and all the gears were crammed together too closely for the torque bands. Finally they've figured out that 6th is for cruising on the highway at 70+, 5th is a great "expressway gear" when you're running 50-65, and then 1-4 are spaced widely but not too widely for the torque band. These things haul in the real world, they're properly quick cars. P.S. no you can't fully defeat the stability control from the factory, but you can modify the function of the ESP button with a VAGCOM so it does turn off completely. That's been how VW has done their ESP systems since 2006, for better or worse.

Thanks for the commentary, Matt! I've heard only a slight bit about the gearing of the new car, so it was really interesting to hear your impression of it. As you found, VW does not let you switch off Stability Control, although it is possible through aftermarket support. I used to think that was disappointing, but unless you want to drive it sideways, it's not a deal-breaker for me.

At first I was irritated by no PP or DSG, but this is actually a great test, this might be the slowest GTI you can get, so it's good to see the range of speed it could do. Yes, a lot kitted PP DSG, no satnav, no sunroof ect, should still be done, but this isn't a bad test if you think about it - someone will buy a car like this.

It’s interesting coming back to this video now that the ST fords are gone and Mazdaspeed is gone. I got a 2019 GTI SE and it was 95% there, and went ahead with the newly available APR Plus (warrantied) tune. It’s a fabulous package. It’s not perfect, but having driven many Fiesta ST’s, I gotta say that this Mk 7.5 is better. The fiesta is more fun in the short term, but eventually, like all cars, they become cars, and as a car the VW is leagues better. It’s not quite as ragged, but you come to appreciate that after a while. I love the Fiesta ST, it will always have a spot in my heart as one of the best little pocket rockets made. At the end of the day, I never made it home with one, and that’s after having a Gen 2 Genesis Coupe, ND1 Miata, and 981 Cayman S. Also, to comment on the gearing, it’s long but it suits the power band. The turbo dies really hard above 4500-5000 rpm, and with short gears you’d be always out of the power band. Long gears work well, as you can have the turbo pull you from 3500 onwards, and you don’t really notice that 2nd goes above 70, because there’s not much reason to be up there. A solid review as always

newbie question. what does he mean by the long gearing? (is it a good thing or a bad thing)
@nyansugoi
@nyansugoi 9 жыл бұрын
With longer gearing, each gear covers a wider range of speeds. The benefit is better mpg and lower cruising RPM. With shorter gearing, each gear has narrower range of speed. Instead of 2nd gear hitting 63mph it might hit 55-57mph (forcing a sprint to 60mph to happen in 3rd gear, which can really hinder a 0-60 number ex: Fiesta ST and Toyobaru Triplets). Shorter gearing is good for better / more brisk acceleration. Good or bad depends on the application.

BBDSmint All wheel drive. Check on both cars. 290+bhp. Check on both cars. Manual transmission. Check on both cars. I think the fact that the lancer is 4 doors will make it a bit heavier and/or less rigid. The suspension on the R should be better in theory. I think the MK7 Golf R will give the Evo a run for it's money.
@TheSmokingTire
@TheSmokingTire 9 жыл бұрын
Tyler Gough We hope so. Tanner was driving a Golf R in Europe when I was over there with him and Forza Horizon 2, and he seemed to really like it. We weren't big fans of the last Golf R, mainly because it wasn't fun enough to justify the price premium over a GTI and because you couldn't defeat traction control.
@BBDSmint
@BBDSmint 9 жыл бұрын
However the Golf has none of the AYC wizardry that makes the Evo so quick through a b-road, and whilst the US Evo gets 291 stock horsepower, I live in the UK so we get the FQ models, a Golf R won't touch an FQ-360 or 400. I forgot that you guys don't get those ones. Of course the R and the 290hp MR will probably be quite similar! Also, whilst the Evo X's 4B11T is no 4G63 by any means, it's still a cracking engine and I'd argue has far more character than the modern Golf 2.0s.
@tgough88
@tgough88 9 жыл бұрын
BBDSmint Definitely not touching the FQs, that's for the R-400 if it ever comes out. I totally agree that current Golf R can't touch the MR stock. And even with modification, the MR is probably a better platform for a highly tuned or track prepped car. That said, I bought a mk6 Golf R because I liked having the practicality of a hatch, a nice interior, a smooth ride, and the fact not everyone who gets in the car thinks your a boy racer (not that's always a bad thing :)). The new R also has some interesting things that should help, like a new haldex system, adjustable dampers, DSG, and upgraded engine internals. I still agree that it might not be as fast and refined a driver's car as the Evo, but I'm hoping its closer, so the Mk7 could be a real have your cake and eat it too ride.

Can you comment on how it compared to this newer version? Pros of cons of both? I'm looking into a GTI, so I want to know if I should save up for the new ones or just get the previous gen. I'm not really finding it worth to upgrade from what I've seen so far though. Your thoughts?
@Armenier93
@Armenier93 9 жыл бұрын
the new car is definitely worth the upgrade. the problem with the mark 6 and mark 5 was that the mark 6 was basically a mark 5 gti repacked and restyled with the same engine and suspension. I have driven the new mark 7 and was immensely impressed by the improvement (weight loss, styling, and power package which comes with that lsd). Also the turbo on the new 2.0 t is apparently alot better and individuals with ONLY an apr TUNE are pushing well over 300HP. I would hands down get the new car and this is coming from a mark 6 gti owner who has a tune, exhaust, downpipe, and intake ( running 260hp and 300tq roughly).

yah thats at the crank. my car runs 240hp and 260tq roughly to the wheels with all those mods. with a simple tune (roughly 500-800 dollars) you can make more hp at the crank and wheels with the new mark 7 gti. According to apr its 305hp and 371tq roughly at the crank, with just a tune.

I bought a brand new '13 GLI, loved the car REALLY fun to drive. But the quality of the car overall underwhelmed me. By 15k I had so many interior rattles I got rid of it. Wish they were built just a tad better. Hopefully they build the GTI's with a little more quality.

My '10 GTi rattles quite a bit. 55K miles. It's squeaks too. However, I drove a buddy's '11 with 45K miles and it was dead quiet and nice. Who knows.

Re: interior The GTI interior is miles ahead of the STi. Although, the new STi (15+) certainly has the nicest interior of any STi to date. That's not saying a whole lot, though. The quality of the materials in the STi is simply lacking and the interior looks a bit muddled or odd up front. It is essentially a standard Impreza interior with a different steering wheel and nicer seats. There are some new soft touch plastics on the dash, which is way nicer than the hard dash on the previous gen, but the center console and doors are just as hard and unpleasant as before. Everything scratches easily. The GTI, on the other hand, has soft plastics in a lot more places, and everything you are going to touch throughout the car has a more "substantial" feel to it, if that makes sense. The leather is also a nicer quality than a WRX limited or STi limited (standard STi has Alcantara inserts on the seats). It's also a lot quieter and just feels more solid; from the door closures to the glovebox, everything just feels purposeful, whereas the WRX/STi feels like it will always work, but it will rattle and squeak when doing so. The STi is a "harder" car in terms of daily living. The new one is even stiffer I believe. I don't have much seat time in the new one, but the GR (previous gen) is a bit rough on crappy roads. As far as performance goes, they are two different markets, honestly. The price points are different and it's a FWD vs AWD comparison, not to mention the STi has about 90 more hp. The Golf R would be what I would compare to the STi. Ultimately, no one can tell you which one is best for you; you will just have to get out there and drive them and make a decision. I went with the Subaru, FWIW, but that was comparing the GR WRX to the MK6 GTI.

TheSmokingTire I understand this is probably wishful thinking but is there anything like this for non-journalist? I know Mazda and GM did the Rev It Up thing in the past which I've done and as well as BFG's tire test but they were mostly auto-x style. It'd be cool to test drive some cars at higher limits than the "around the block" while trying to not get pulled over.

Personally bugged by people comparing the Golf GTI to the Fiesta ST so much. Is it because the GTI can't hang with the Focus ST? Either way, Golf GTI has been the same car for too long. Back in 2008 my coworker got a new GTI and I thought it was rad back then but 6+ years later it needs some oomph.

I test drove one a few months ago. Awesome, refined daily driver that's pretty fun to drive. But I agree with Matt on the engine. It has very little character despite a broad torque band. I used to own a 2011 A3 with essentially the same 2.0T and it kept misfiring on me at around 25k miles with just an APR Stage 1 tune. Eventually had to replace the intake manifold. My housemate's mk6 GTI had the same issue with no tune. So that might be a long-term issue with the new GTI as well.

@Zygrene 9 жыл бұрын
dragkid185 The first time it happened to my A3, I had one of the coilpacks replaced. On the 2nd time, 2 coilpacks were replaced and the entire intake manifold was replaced. My friend's GTI apparently just had carbon buildup in the intake manifold, and once that was cleaned it was fine (for now). So maybe not the same issue, but both resulted in misfires and a CEL.
@dragkid185
@dragkid185 9 жыл бұрын
Zygrene Ok sounds like the intake manifold is more of a problem than the coilpacks. Probably has something to do with the secondary throttle flaps.

MKVI GTI have an extended warranty up to 120,000 miles or 2017ish, on the injectors and intake manifold. Check with your local dealer to verify. I had my intake manifold, an injector, and a coil pack all go bad within one week of each other. VW took care of all of it via the extended warranty. My 2010 GTI had 90,000 miles on it at the time. They also recommended cleaning the carbon due to the direct injection not being able to clean the valves. I had them take photos and send it to me prior. It was indeed filthy and caked on. This is a $600-$1200 job depending on the dealer and country you live in. The intake manifold needs to be removed and VW's labor is listed as 6 hours, even though it takes 30 minutes to remove, about an hour to clean, and another 30 to assemble.

Your 03 jetta also most likely only has 5 gears. The new gti has a 6 speed which usually has shorter gears than a five speed because it has an extra gear (my 2011 gti maxes third at around 78mph compared to 85-90+ on a 5 speed) which is why it's interesting this gti has gears so long with a 6 speed.

I also think it's because the Canada and America Automotive agreement, that puts taxes on car parts and cars. The worst thing with Honda is they won't give you a warranty if you buy one in the states and bring it to Canada. I don't think it's the exchange rate because I just converted $28000USD and its $31460CAD. But in Portugal I don't see why it isn't cheaper, it's a European car. Doesn't Germany use euros like Portugal does?

The word you are looking for is predictable. Handling at the limit is never ragged, it just simply works. The long gearing is for achieving those 30+mpg numbers. As a mk6 GTI autobahn owner, I've never once said "geez I wish this car handled better, or went faster". Because fact is, If you are driving it at 100% on the street/ winding back road... you are already likely to wind up in jail. The only time I'd want anything faster, would be a track.

you'll be happier with a GTI over a focus or fiesta ST anyway. It's much nicer and more suitable for an everyday car and will hold its value better. Performance is easy with a stage 1 tune expect around 320hp 400ft lbs of torque with the mk7. Pair that power with the PP's LSD, DSG trans and a great chassis like the gti and you have a great car
