slow car fast as we all know! Momentum is the name of the challenge, if you want horsepower look elsewhere :) I've been able to master the basics of performance driving due to the miata's "lack" of power. Since there is no fear of too much power, I can focus on everything else like how the car behaves in corners at all sorts of speeds, weight transfer, braking points, etc...I've become very "in-tune" with it. Yes, there are many times i'm wanting or "waiting" for more power but again, that's Mazda's whole point with this car. It teaches me to find areas where I can keep the momentum going and have that extra few mph mid-corner or on exit. Having a capable car that you can comfortably exploit its limits at your beckoning call is a wonderful feeling. Mastering a car (any car) is a beautiful thing. My miata has by far been the most fun and the best teacher on how to toss a car around corners properly and with confidence. My other cars indeed were all about chasing the HP carrot, I look at the miata like a challenge to Drivers... can you be fast without the grunt? Imagine how quickly a miata would lose a Hellcat in the canyons of southern cali. Now imagine the frustration of the Dodge driver.....Bye kitty my 2 cents.

@@atlaspowershrugged that's the fun I suppose, not knowing or wondering. Not picking on a particular car or anything, it's the principalities of my example. From what I've experienced I can out-corner chargers and challengers no problem on the streets. Most "muscle car" drivers will lift hard right before corner entry, and I can usually floor it, stick the turn and see yaaaaaaa!! Of course on the straight they come back making all kinds of noise and blow by me, but that's why I let them have their glory and always give a peace sign or thumbs up. Not saying I can beat every v8, calm down internet, just explaining how challenging and exciting a momentum car can be.

I think it depends where you live really. Those canyons look like they really suit faster cars. The roads are fast and sweeping. Whereas if you were to drive Miata's/MX5's on narrower more twisty roads, you would find that they have plenty of power. You can take more or less any car to a drag strip and come home with the conclusion that it needs more power, then take the same car to a single lane road with passing places and power is not so much of a priority.
@kevinnorwood73553 жыл бұрын
This. The car shines on tight twisty roads it leaves most cars behind because they are too busy riding their brakes going into the turns. If you’ve ever seen a race on smaller, tighter tracks cars like the Miata come out ahead in the end. Zack picked the wrong road for this car.

@@jlopez1017d for anything less than 300whp I would totally agree with you. Though the drawback is the price. I built my own turbo kit for about $1100 and my car made 240whp. Theres a guy in California making 700whp with a fully built nb1 1.8 motor. Pretty nuts for a motor that was never intended for boost and started at around 100hp. I get the excitement of acceleration from it because A) the noise when you wind it out and B) the powerband where you feel it come up on cam above 4000 RPM. I enjoy being able to access that feeling regularly because a floored Miata rung out to redline is like...Minivan-fast, or 4-cylinder Accord-fast, if that. You get to ring it out and hear it howl just keeping up with people in their boring cars. And that doesn't even get into the rest of the driving experience that literally makes me giggle, even at speeds below 40 MPH. NB is 16.4lb:1hp - it's in economy car power to weight ratio territory; that stated, I still want an NB Miata to throw parts at, mainly a turbo or LS. ND is 12.9lb:1hp - the problem with the ND is that we are in a world where horsepower is relatively cheap. for comparison purposes - 2000 miata vs 2000 mustang - the miata was handling focused, but lacked power in comparison, and in all honesty Ford wasn't really making an effort on the mustang (eg. resting on their laurels). Fast forward to 2019 miata vs 2019 mustang - the miata is driver focused, and still lacks power in comparison, the difference is that the mustang handling has improved dramatically, as well as it's horsepower because for is actually trying; now do a price comparison, and unless one of your must haves is 2-seater, the mustang will scratch the handling itch for most people. I know what comment readers are thinking, "those two cars don't directly compete" they certainly don't, but, they are cross-shopped, simply because they are not a primary car for the people buying them new, they are a secondary or tertiary car, to be driven on the weekends/sunny days/track days.

I traded an NB Miata for an S550 Cobb tuned ecoboost Mustang. The power is so much better and the handling as you said is more than adequate for almost all street driving. Highway cruising, sweepy canyon roads like in the video, even road courses with the right brakes and tires, more fun in the Mustang.

My ND2 is the base Sport model (an incredible bargain), making it the lightest MX-5 in the range. The car is bog stock, no options, because I wanted the "purest' sports car I could find. It is much faster than the NA shown here. For the street you won't need Bilsteins, Brembos, or BBS -- the stock shocks and brakes will take whatever you throw at them, and I have never needed limited-slip -- though for autocross it is necessary. Mazda have employed every hot rod trick in the book to get 181 seamless hp at 7200 rpm out of its 2L four while at the same time lowering the rpm for peak torque to 4000. It is probably the most refined 2L on the market, giving superb drivability that no forced induction could match. Just keep the revs up, and with that close-ratio 6-speed (no overdrive) you'll always find the right gear. In the twisties I can get those skinny 16" tires into a gentle four-wheel drift like F1 cars from the '60s. More hp would unbalance the car at the limit and force the driver to tip-toe around corners, which is what the 911 and WRX pilots have to do, and that is why they can't shake me.

I'm not sure a canyon run is the right place to decide if a Miata has enough power. In any urban/suburban environment it's just the right amount of power to have fun without getting in lose-your-license or jailtime trouble. I also just had an ecoboost mustang rental, which was kind of boring around town and easy to get in trouble with (got pulled over within 10 minutes of picking it up - and I was just putting around town!). I was so relieved to get back in my little mazda 3 where I can have fun in all the gears without getting in trouble.

It also depends on the roads you'll be driving it. Miatas are perfect for very technical roads with lots of sharp turns with the amount of power they have. In the LA canyons with long sweeping curves where you can reach high speeds, yeah, you'll want more power. But the car really is best suited for super technical and tight roads, as the short wheelbase may not be the best for high speed stability, it will help the car rotate and link apexes much easier than a bigger car. Add more power to the equation and you've got a car that's you can easily lose control of. The low power imo pairs perfectly with the wheelbase then as you are gonna be shifting weight around while needing to stay in the power band for traction. But again, for long sweeping curves, you're gonna want a different car imo. Longer wheelbase and more power makes sense for the canyon roads being driven in the video.

There’s a lot to be said for driving a car, especially one like this mx-5, which are bordering classic status as the manufacturer intended. I’ve got a DC5 Integra type R, and it could use a bit more power and more compliant shocks, but that’s not what Honda wanted. Do I know better? It's got the most power, a free-revving engine with a 7500 RPM redline, and a telescoping steering wheel (!!!) - but it's still a Miata so it's not as quick in the straights as, well, many other options. Honestly I can't wait to see what Flyin' Miata does with the 2019, because I reckon they'll do a good, reliable job bumping it up to the 200 HP mark, if not beyond. You don't necessarily need more power. Tighter corners would work too. I guess it's not an option in your part of the world but you can fit a turbo or supercharger legally in you country so problem solved.

Most of the time I feel like I am hauling butt then I look down and I'm doing 65 or so....lol but it FEELS fast ya know? Do miatas "need" more power? As in are they unpowered for a daily driver? heck no way! Do MANY Miata driver including moi """NEEED" more power? YES! We DO! The worst I will say thing is passing power in the twisties existing motor is lacking and it can be dangerous ...or put it this way it would be safer with MORE power to complete a pass before someone speeding the oncoming direction suddenly appears! ya know? Riding my 165hp hp sportbike is so much more pleasant passing slower traffic! It is not even something to think about much less worry over.....not true with an ND especially uphill! I feel like 225ish hp might be the the sweet spot assuming the car gets no heavier...of course significantly more power probably demands more rubber and better brakes so theres a few pounds dang it ....I am hoping they have an HP option for 2025 Miata! THAT is what it will take for me to buy a new one.....my 2018 is barely boken in with like 23k miles....I am retired so it is only a weekend toy

naw 200hp in a base model 2018 would be a great value, and would probably get mad awards for best feeling performance for buck

My 2001 Special Editions 6 speed was horrendous. Also the bodies of the 2nd genes are rust buckets. Loved it to death. Wish it was a fucking 5 speed though. The gears were not even long.

Definitely lol. I have the same exact car. It could use an extra 50 HP and torque.

Sam, don't skimp. If you're changing suspension already, then you might as well do coilovers. You'll thank yourself in the long run.

See, this is the type of Miata that would be worth 4-5k not those fuckin chipped paint, fart cans and stupid camber. Just because you put money into it doesn’t mean it actually increased the value

good host but you have a tendency to cut off the guest half way through every other sentence to talk about your experiences. it might be nice to hear what the guest has to say or let them finish. i watch these episodes to experience the car i can't drive or have the option to drive. it's not just about your opinion of the car or why it's not good enough. i think Matt was just more 'this is my opinion, yours might be different, but this is mine' it didn't feel like his was the only opinion in the car that mattered. i dunno might just be me today.
