Really enjoy these pods with Jason, always a great time. I will say that I have never thought that you guys were out of touch with regular people more than I have while watching this. Where I'm from everyone and their brother has at least a full size truck, and they do indeed use them weekly in ways that other vehicles could not be substituted. To say that people don't need trucks and it's gluttonous may be true in SoCal, but is categorically false for large swaths of the country. SoCal could be believed to be a different planet when compared to the rest of the US, something that many people who live there tend to forget. For what it's worth I daily an ND Miata RF and never plan to own a truck so I'm not sticking up for myself lol
@myemailiscool3 жыл бұрын
that's why these upcoming EV trucks will be great, indeed many people do need trucks and don't drive anywhere near 300-400 miles per day. these can be replaced with EVs and we get the best of both worlds
@nathanchildress55963 жыл бұрын
Yes, but their point was you guys could have done those tasks in medium sized trucks, and the new ones are WAY bigger than they need to be. If Vice Grip Garage can revive a dead ‘75 Blazer and immediately drag around half buried cars with seized brakes, then you don’t need a 3 ton Cummins or dually in your life.

I love the discussion on excess, particularly about half-ton trucks. Growing up in Texas, it is almost expected that if you are a guy, you need a pickup. My first truck was a 1991 Mazda. My grandpa originally purchased it to flat tow behind his RV. I loved it, but I caught absolute hell from my high school friends for it not being a real truck. That truck was vandalized, dragged across the parking lot, and even picked up by hand by a few of the football team dudes. I was desperate to get a real truck and ended up in my uncle's 1991 F-150 which improved my social standing considerably. Ended up in a couple Toyota Tacomas through college, but went back to full size trucks until recently. Other than being great highway vehicles, full size trucks suck as dailies. They handle like garbage, are a bitch to park most anywhere, and even a 6'1" person such as myself needs steps to get in a 2wd half-ton (trucks weren't this bad 20 years ago, tbh). Mid-size trucks aren't much better other than being easier to park. They are still too high off the ground, get nearly as shutty mpg, and ride/handle no better than half-tons. I finally did what I ahould have done 15 years ago and bought a Ridgeline. It's a crossover with a bed and I don't care. It handles nice, rides good, carries my motorcycle and mountain bikes, and I don't need a step stool to get inside. I don't feel the slightest bit cool driving it, but damned if it isn't the perfect daily.
@thehumanoid65433 жыл бұрын
or you could've gotten an 07 tsx and an actually better 1st gen honda ridgeline used. Would cost about the same and you wouldn't have to drive a fugly and big crossover/trucc around town.
@aaronbehindbars3 жыл бұрын
@@thehumanoid6543 You don't think the 1st gen Ridgelines are fugly? For the record, I have been a fan of the Ridge since it came out, but I find the 2nd gen much more attractive and the latest facelifted model pretty handsome. I've not driven a 1st gen, but there seems to be a general concensus within the Ridgeline community that the 2nd gen model provides a nicer driving experience. You could make the argument that the simpler mechanicals are less trouble prone, but that's an argument anybody will make when comparing older and newer vehicles. I'd rather have a new vehicle with a warranty. The Ridgeline isn't a small vehicle, but it's manageable and drives smaller than it is. I've owned two vehicles before. I had an Accord as my daily and an older Chevy Silverado for when I needed to do truck stuff. I got tired of keeping up with 2 vehicles (not including my wife's). I also started having pain sitting in the Accord. I'd drive my truck and the pain went away. My right hip can't tolerate sitting low to the floor, so cars are a no-go. I need to be in either a crossover or a pickup, so might as well have a pickup that drives like a car. The Ridgeline gets nearly the same mpg as my wife's small crossover, so I drive it longer distances. I drive her vehicle when I am parking in crowded areas. Only thing I would change is replacing the wife's car with an EV, but at $40 a month we spend on gas for her vehicle which is paid off, that makes 0 economic sense. We both work from home. I drive a bit on the weekends, but that's it. Both our vehicles are paid for, will be very low mileage, and should last a long time.
@thehumanoid65433 жыл бұрын
@@aaronbehindbars Well Id say youre partly right. The first gen ridgeline is like a f150 with a tundra nose. It doesn't sit right. But atleast its not a Honda passport with a bed. And I just figured used ridgeline cause I thought that you'd like to have some fun too. And nothing says good quality, high revving and great handling sedan like a 1st gen 6 speed tsx. I'm in college and I have one with michelin as3+'s, some good brembos and a k&n cold air intake and I gotta say, having driven a fk8 type r, this is way better in the way it drives. And yknow the old adage, one car always better than two(until it's not true, that is 😂). But yknow i think you have more knowledge about your situation than I do, so it was probably wrong for me to comment.
@aaronbehindbars3 жыл бұрын
@@thehumanoid6543 The Ridgeline has always been a crossover with a bed. Both gens are based on the Pilot/Odyssey platform. The 2nd gen models have the same AWD system that Acura uses that has a torque vectoring rear diff. It handles extremely well and with the paddle shift ZF 9 speed gearbox, it's a lot of fun in the twisties. Most people have no clue how these are built and what they can do. They're truly impressive vehicles.

A couple parts I'd like to connect: Cammisa saying he doesn't consider his views on excess when he 'puts his journalism cap on', and Matt's semi-realization/admission that he and Jason are "one leg of the tripod" when it comes to helping sell excess. Matt and Jason are two auto journalists most open about questioning the car industry and society in general, but they still do ignore the excess a lot when doing reviews. Personally I'd support more of those questions coming into the reviews you both do; there would be backlash, but how much is that backlash justifiable or just emotional? Great work, great convo, much respect and happy 2022.

Self-driving car giving time back? It's not like you can do anything you like with that time -- you're still stuck in that container for a duration of time. You'll end up just wasting that time on the internet waiting for your commute to end. Let's be honest here: most people won't be making business calls or working on their business; most people will just be killing time on their self-driving commute. So TIME is not an argument for the majority of people. That'll just mean a win for the internet companies because they'll get even more of your attention (and data). I'd say driving a car may even be HEALTHIER than staring at a screen watching youtube or scrolling through your so-called "social" media "feed" for that amount of time: 1) your eyes are not staring at a screen from a short distance (bad for eyes) 2) your brain is focused and you're constantly making mental calculations (rather than being brain-dead watching youtube) 3) your neck is in a better position because most people tilt their head down when using a "laptop" or phone. Sure, self-driving stuff may save lives, but I'm just saying you'd be sacrificing yourself for the "greater good" thinking that you're the winner here.

It irks me to hear Matt talk about excess while he drives a FUCKING COUNTACH. No wonder the dude has anxiety and depression, he’s a hypocrite and he’s trying to be a woke liberal while he’s a rich guy with a Countach and a huge freaking house while he’s simultaneously bitching about human excess. That’s enough to make anyone anxious. Complaining about excess while trying to open a second multi-million dollar car storage place that caters to other rich folks 😂 Not intended to bash Matt, as I like the guy I think he’s insightful and generally well spoken, and I love cars, and I love his take on them. But man, to hear a countach owner complain about human excess just gives me a headache. If excess bothers you and you want to be a woke liberal- give away all your excessive possessions. I’ll take the countach lol

Classic american liberal elite mentality. Drive gigantic SUVs, own a house that uses a ton of resources, then consume even more stuff that is marketed as eco to make themselves feel good and embrace woke culture to pretend they're good people.

I couldn’t agree more. I would say that a good amount of people who have a truck will use it until it dies and it will be their only car. Matt owns a lot of cars and buys new cars which is bad for the environment. It seems like he is talking down from his throne when he goes on these talks about excess and it makes me not want to listen to him anymore because why does that matter to how the vehicle performs. If Matt really have a shit about the environment he wouldn’t be going out on that boat he has, he wouldn’t own a bunch of cars, and he sure as hell wouldn’t own a business which enables and encourages people to buy more cars. Needless to say I miss the old Matt that was true to himself.

Same. I've listened to TST forever, and will continue to. Matt is GREAT. But going so overboard on the TRX for being useless and excessive, while simultaneously taking a AMG GT Black Series on a rally and praising it...when it's literally good for almost nothing except on a race track is wild to me. A TRX can at least be an "only car" for an enthusiast. It can do anything except get good gas mileage. Fast. Off road. Tow. It's got a huge cab. Tailgate. Looks cool. Sounds great. I'm waiting on some link to vaccination status at this point.

He was fine until he started hanging around purple hair'd Facebook employees from the Silicon Valley. I use to be an avid listener but tapped out during the 2020 election season after injecting too much politics in his content.

1:26:32 the problem is when they sell out of a limited supply for a higher profit. Thats when companies start rolexing their products, if you can guarantee a sale because its more difficult to get then the re sale value allows you to to adjust the MSRP accordingly, and plus in an economy where who has your particular product really does matter it only incentivizes company's to limit supply to people that are willing to justify the hoops and expense for the product because they themselves can profit off it, even if it makes the company millions in free marketing.
