I've just been playing some CK2 recently and you know... I think it holds up better than CK3, CK3 feels really anemic when you compare the two. First of all, laws got lobotomized. I was just excited as everyone else when we saw feudal contracts were being introduced but the fact they replaced laws is just lame, and clans are even worse. Building onto that, the council was simplified too, no longer do you need to balance the various amibitions/goals of your councilors (some were loyal, pragmatists who would only agree to things that benefited them, hardliner honourbound guys who would never let you breach their morals, etc), they get no votes on laws and theres no council empowerment or anything... theyre just modifiers. On top of that you have no regencies, children are just the heads of state meaning the player never has to sit on their hands or manage their realm or have power taken away from them... ck is most fun at least imo when its an RPG but ck3 feels too afraid to be that... they just cant ever take the reigns away from the players. Also while expanding out the cultural and religion mechanics they were utterly stripped of flavour, one religion or culture is the same as any other, the only difference being some boxes were checked. Governments are a lot less diverse. Barons are less diverse (in ck2 the difference between a town and a castle was crucial, in ck3 its just whos allowed to hold it). China doesnt exist and nomads have no flavour so East Asia despite being massively expanded was neutered. The catholic church is only the pope. Trade doesnt exist. I honestly think even the menus were more navigateable, i swear ck2 takes less clicks to do the same stuff. I think mods try to address a lot of this but I feel like paradox has really given up. Its been 2 years now and the game doesnt feel close. Honestly I really hope paradox picks up the pace with their expansions, it feels like at this point, ck2 is still the superior game even with inferior graphics and performance. Theres lots of little improvements i love, but the game feels utterly empty. The biggest sin imo is the lack of flavour, playing the duke of wales should feel different than playing the emperor of the mongol empire... but it doesnt. Also if they create a CK3 spinoff game or standalone dlc like they usually do, it should be CK3 in china, maybe the spring and autumn period. Focus hardcore on the RPG mechanics, have seasons be absolutely vital (maybe you only make food/most of your money during the fall harvest, make winters near impossible to forage in, etc), have longer years, expand councils, let us break laws for massive negative modifiers (whos going to stop the king from announcing his heir as a bastard... oh all your disloyal/offended vassals and your heir?), essentially just expand on the story elements of the game and pull it away from being a slightly more dynamic EU style game

Yeah, sure. But i dont think its reasonable for a sequel to come out having learned so little from the dlc's. In my mind at least the goal of the sequel for a sandbox game is to improve upon the original. Like i just dont think "it was dlc" is really valid here, would you say the same thing if ck3 included no council, only let you play catholics, or any of that? The basegame of ck2 is barren, empty, and boring and if thats all ck3 needs to be, i dont really see the point.
