I took Ambien for a few weeks. The first sign of trouble was waking up not in my bed, but in my car having driven quite some distance before pulling into a parking lot and laying down. The second sign was having driven to my friends house who called our other friend to come laugh at me while I tripped balls before taking me home. That shit is scary AF.

Back when I was a teenager, I spent some time in an adolescent psych ward and LET ME TELL YOU, 12 teenagers hopped up on sleep meds all at once is a recipe for disaster and hilarity. One girl fell INTO her bin, another guy used to film himself talking shit every night until he passed out, I regularly had to spear tackle another patient to stop her from getting to the kitchen because she would eat a week's worth of cheese in one sitting and not remember it (she asked me to stop her, dw). One night we had a fruit fight in the patient kitchen and then I slept on the desk in my room despite having a perfectly good bed. Not to mention the unhinged texts we used to send each other. Fond memories of a bizarre time lmao

I remember when I took my first sleep meds, really strong stuff. Luckily I didn't hallucinate stuff because it is an antihallucinogen, but I was absolutely screwed out of my mind. I've been in the psychiatric care for 21 years, and in the early 2000'a it was fairly common for people to take Stilnoct/ambien, and it was infamous for being strong and bad. From 2009 and forward I've more or less never heard of anyone taking it. I believe it is very rarely, if ever, prescribed anymore in my country (Sweden). However, Zopiklom, a weaker but similar medication, made me cut up my clothes and self-harm during the night. The next morning I didn't know if it was a dream or true until I checked my clothes and legs. Nowadays I don't take any falling-asleep meds, but stay-asleep all night-meds, and they are completely free of these side effects.

I regularly take sleep medication - ironically, it isn't for my insomnia, it's actually for a nerve disorder but the medication just so happens to ALSO be great at making you sleep. Even after about 8 years of using it, it STILL makes me go a bit doolally. I'll be having full conversations with people and have zero clue wtf I'm even on about and am generally a very poor conversation partner after I've had my medication. Also makes me dream like mad even still - first time I took it I got home and laid on my couch before dreaming that I was a starfish that was fed up of the ocean so I flew away and flew around my hometown smacking into people's faces as I went. Even now, I still dream absolutely wack ass shit like that. Meds are weird.

I went to visit my family once in 2008, and took my ambien right when i got there. Didn't know everyone would be hungry when I got there, so I offer to go grab McDonald's. Thought i had time before it kicked in. It was a mile or two down a rural road, turn left go one mile into town and there was McDonald's. Thought it wouldn't kick in for a while. It kicked in when I was halfway back, and while driving, I was more than certain the trees lining the road on the rural road, were bowing to me. Never again. My ex husband took it once, and confided in me that the trees were speaking badly of him behind his back. That stuff is crazy. Neither of us have ever taken Ambien again.

As for why: After WWI, when the old Austrian Empire fell apart, these two countries gained independence together as one. There were lot of border squabbles during those years, since several of the losing forces of WWI (Germany, Austria, Hungary) wanted to reverse their territorial losses, so staying together was probably a good idea. And after WWII, being part of the communist block didn't make anything easier. The "divorce" happened in 1992, roughly 3 years after the end of communism. It was a bit of a "honey, it's not me, it's you"-situation, which lead to the two independent countries...
