With lovely Constance Moore (and Eddie Cantor, too), from "Show Business" (1944).

This is utterly romantic. George Murphy was amazing at his craft and was simply understated as an actor. He should have received many accolades for his performances in pictures and dances. If Only Hollywood cinema restored genres like these again...

I thought I knew my musicals, but not only is this number new to me, but so is Miss Constance Moore. Loved her reactions to Geo. M. as he was singing, and of course her dancing was the essence of charm and elegance, as was his. Thanks for posting.

Brilliant. Mr. Murphy was multi talented, and didn't get the limelight he deserved. The song is also featured in the James Cagney film, " The Roaring Twenties ", sung by the delectable Priscilla Lane.

George Murphy served one term as an US Senator from California in the 1960's.

This song was written in 1924 by Isham Jones, with lyrics by Gus Kahn. A perennial favorite, it was sung by Priscilla Lane in the 1939 film "The Roaring Twenties," by Ginger Rogers and Cornel Wilde in the 1947 film "It Had to Be You" and later by Danny Thomas in the 1951 film "I'll See You in My Dreams." Barbra Streisand did a memorable rendition in her 1966 TV special "Color Me Barbra."

Thank you for the information. A version of this song by Betty Hutton had a long intro before getting into the It Had To Be You portion. Great version also.

@@rr7firefly That was definitely George Murphy who sang it. I can't say for sure if it was also Constance Moore, but I'd assume so.

'Broadway Rhythm' was made in haste as a substitute for 'Broadway Melody of 1943' after Gene Kelly took fright at working with Eleanor Powell. Ginny Simms, the female lead, was Louis B Mayer's pet at the time, but she was no Ellie. It is as close as Murphy got to top billing in a major Metro project. Like Ann Miller, he was not given the breaks he merited: too many 'hero's pal loses the girl' parts. Washington's (and the Technicolor company's) gain was Hollywood's loss.
