I just picked up the mx49 yesterday and I don’t want to stop playing it. It’s a much better keyboard than I expected it to be, especially since it’s under $500.00 USD.

it is unbelievable, I just got mine for 250 € second hand, almost not used. Initially I was in search of general MIDI 49-61 keys controller keyboard but with this price it was clear choice.

I was about to buy a Reface CP AND a Casio CT-X700, but now I want to buy just the Yamaha MX49, instead! It will give me everything I would have had in the two keyboards I was going to buy, and then some, plus it will save me both money and space! Excellent! I'll also have to learn one keyboard instead of two! It does make my audio interface redundant, but that's no biggie. I already have FM Essentials, too. This is perfect!

As someone who has a gang of synths, starting with a Model D I got in '74, on through the original SH and TR series, up through (many of the new skool Elektron (and variants) synths, there are two that are at the top of my list when I recommend best bang for buck.This being, I am not sponsored so I purchase all mine and thus call it like I see it. The two "must haves" in the ~$500 range are the MX and the JDX-i. Ironically, also have the MODX7 and the JDX-A....however I prefer the MX and JDX-i, respectively.

Similar to my older Yamaha MM6, but with a class compliant interface, nice! Online pricing is showing $499 which, for the Yamaha, with over 1,000 great sounds, tons of drums kits, and the interface (and regular MIDI in/out I think), isn’t too bad a price, I guess.

Is it possible to edit sounds from the board itself? Like LFO ADSR? Sounds very nice, For some reason the colour inspires me to make music with it. got that GAS coming up.

It looked difficult to play the keyboard with 1 hand and control the app with the other, it might be a great to jam with mates and have them add fx as you play the keys with 2 hands. Also might be better Ipad app then phone, I can see texts, notifications and calls getting in the way of jamming.

You need a usb to lightning cable. You need to plug it into the USB port on the Mx. Female usb on the Mx doesn’t accept audio and MIDI. It’s to read wavs and MIDI files.

Wondering how well the FM Essentials app "replaces" the old TX81, V50 and DX100 synths. Also, can the connection between the iPad and the MX, be routed through a USB hub -- so the MX can be "pointed" (MIDI routing) to other Synths? Like my Roland D-05... thanks!! Great overview, TSR!

Sorry for the late question. The Manual says you can play this with a midi controller board, or control/sync, other synths/drum machines via midi. But everyone says not. Which is correct please, you would think if it was in the manual it would work, everywhere else says computer only. sigh. Thank you for another awesome demo!

Doug, how did you get the knob to control only the volume of the MX? Using the same controller on mine I can't mix out the MX preset volume. Did you map it to internal volume somehow?

I have the same problem, the two sounds are playing simultaneously all the time, and I don't know how to change the volume of the MX sound separately

@@superslonic I did find the solution - turn the MX volume to maximum then you can turn it down to zero and just one instrument playing.

@@evercazares9340 si tienes Ableton puedes usar Operator, muy bueno y fácil de usar. También hay un vst gratis que se llama Dexed, bastante poderoso pero por lo mismo es más complejo de programar. Y debe haber muchos más, hay una página de vst que se llama vst4free, seguramente habrá bastantes sintetizadores fm ahí

Hello Donald here, I've got the MX 88, How do you turn down or off on the MX,

Not 100% sure I understand what you want. But to turn down the volume of the individual parts you select that from the Knob function settings. (there is a MX88 quick tips page on youtube that covers it) but to turn off the MX88 and have only the FM Essentials sounds come through, go into utilities, select the midi section, inside that is a local control, turn it off (with wheel) and that should work. You may need to select the midi channel to usb. (I don't remember on that part as I don't use FM Essentials all that much anymore. Its fun for a while but looses it's flair after a bit)

If there's a shop near you with an MX49 they're usually perfectly happy to let you just plug in your iPad. or you could try flipping a used one on eBay if it's worth the effort to you... Otherwise I guess you're out of luck.

Yeah I just downloaded the app and took my iPad to guitar center plugged to the Yamaha mx and done don’t forget to bring usb cable with the adapter for the iPad

I am returning mine because it does not do all that the review says. Also the Ext.Music player DOES NOT LOOP. It simply play the length of the track and boom sTop. I researched this but it appears it is not designed to LOOP non stop. To me this a a big draw back. Hence I am returning it right away. No to mention it does not have any built-in memory to save anything. What a LOSS !
